My primary aim to come to the wine company here for lunch on a public holiday was to try their chocolate lava cake, which is the best I've tried so far. I was pleasantly surprised to find that their set lunch offers were also valid on a PH. Evans Lodge is located in a quaint spot, among nature. One of the trees in the carpark was so huge, its roots were causing parts of the road to buckle a bit. A nice, quiet spot in the afternoon. Besides the set lunch ($12) offer, you get a 30% discount too for any other mains or desserts you order off the ala carte menu. It worked out just nice for us then! With the membership card, you get a 10% off the final bill too.

- Tomato soup, my choice of starter for the set lunch

Fresh tomatoes were probably used for the soup which came with the set lunch. It was quite thick and not bad if you like tomatoes. However, my hubby found it too sour for his liking.

- Chicken macaroni, the main dish for the set lunch

Going by the normal-sounding chicken macaroni, I did not pin any high hopes on the item. Boy, I was so surprised! This turned out to be the best dish among our mains! The macaroni was cooked till al dente and the sauce used was very delicious. It was not just one-dimensional nice but had a nice complex taste to it. The tender chicken pieces (thigh meat, not tough chicken breast meat which I thought might be given) and soft pumpkin cubes went well with the macaroni. The addition of black pepper and some sliced chilli uplifted the dish and provided a nice contrast. Excellent! Unfortunately, this dish is not on the main menu though, as this is offered within the set lunch menu which changes from time to time.

- Bacon asparagus capellini ($12.80)

The capellini could have been a bit more al dente. There was plenty of bacon given and the mix of cherry tomatoes, garlic and asparagus was good. Perhaps due to the bacon, the dish was a tad greasy towards the end. Still, it's a tasty dish.

- Ham and Pineapple Pizza ($16)

The pizza crust was thin and the tomato base was quite good. However, I feel that more cheese and ham could have been given. Also, it's kinda pricey for a small pizza.

- Chocolate lava cake ($12.80)

As usual, the chocolate lava cake did not disappoint. There was plenty of good quality oozing chocolate within, accompanied by a good scoop of vanilla ice cream. Very nice!

A lovely place with good food to match

As for the grilled chicken sphagetti, the grilled chicken was abit charred but nevertheless still tasted good. The sphagetti was just normal fare.

This place has a rather dim light and tranquil atmosphere which makes it quite romantic. However, it could be due to the lack of human traffic on a monday night. As for weekends, I am not too sure about its crowd size.

I went to The Wine Company to celebrate a friend's birthday with a group of friends! This beautiful restaurant is tucked away at Evans Lodge, a rather inaccessible place if you're not driving. You can take a bus to along Dunearn/ Bukit Timah Rd and walk about 200m (see: gothere.sg, search for Evans Lodge). It's not that far if you're not wearing heels ;) You can also walk from Botanic Gardens, but it's a little far, around 500m.

AMBIENCE: I liked the ambience a lot, with its dim lighting (bad for food photography though) and candles, it exudes a very romantic setting for everyone. The wonderful ambience just sets you in a good mood immediately. Surprisingly, this place is quite packed, both indoors and outdoors (you can choose where you want to sit) despite being located at such a secluded place. The crowd is mainly aged mid-20s and above.

FOOD: Wde variety of food available, ranging from local delights, pasta, platters... there's bound to be something for everyone! The food was above-average, but the portion was a bit small for my liking. But oh well, I'm a big eater so... I guess it's filling enough for most people. I ordered the Smoked Salmon Spaghetti ($14), which I liked quite a lot. I'd give it a 85/100. My friends ordered Crabmeat Spaghetti, Spaghetti Cabonara (and a few others which I forgot). All of them enjoyed their food very much

What's going to "The Wine Company" without some wine? We ordered a little, but were too inexperienced to fully appreciate the red wine.

SERVICE: Good service, prompt and polite staff that are well-equipped with the knowledge of their menu items. As we are amaeturs at wine, we asked for explanations of some of the wine selections. Despite the possibility of us not ordering any wine at all, they replied us with professionalism. Thumbs up! They also catered to our request to a birthday cake and provided plates and candles without any prior requests. Good initiative. That may seemed to be the least expected out of restaurants but many restaurants fail to reach this standard.

OVERALL: Very pleasant night out with friends and I would love to go there again, maybe after I've learnt more about wines and can fully appreciate the place. The staff are very patient to explain everything, so not to worry if you're not good at wine-tasting!

P/S: Important to dress up too, smart-casual is the general attire for most people.
