Fondly known amongst Singapore males as the Army Market, Golden Mile Food Centre offers a myriad of awesome hawker food. Chief among them would be Yew Chuan Claypot Rice. Its popularity attested to by the long queues during mealtimes each day.

Given the traditional means of preparation, authentic Claypot Rice is probably not for someone looking for a quick bite. To bring out the flavours within the rice and meats, each pot is prepared on order, and simmered over charcoal fire for the best tastes, taking approximately 15mins each. Depending on the number of people sharing (or the size of your appetite if you are going solo), there are a range of sizes to choose from: $5, $10, $15, $20, $25. Just as a rough guide, a $15 pot would probably suffice for a group of 3.

At Yew Chuan Claypot Rice, the stall owner is lavish with ingredients, the pot of rice is peppered with chunks of chicken, chinese sausage and salted fish, lathered in a dark soya sauce. The effort that goes into preparation is evident, when the aroma just hits you when the dish is served to you at your table. The charred bits at the side of the pot can also be scraped off and eaten, given that sinful burnt crunch.

To top off the meal, one can also opt for vegetables cooked in sesame oil, which goes smoothly with the charred flavour of the claypot rice.

You can smell the aroma of the claypot rice when you walk past the stall. This stall actually cooks their claypot rice using rice grains; instead of cooked rice, which is what most stalls do. Hence, the waiting time may take awhile. They are really generous with the chicken and the claypot rice tastes really good. When you reach the bottom of the pot, you can get the slightly burned rice, which is the best part! The price is reasonable as well ^^

Yew Chuan Claypot Rice is located at a corner of the basement of Golden Mile Food Centre (also know as Beach Road Army Market )After ordering, you will need to wait for a minimum of 15 to 20minutes. Generous portion of Claypot Chicken Rice that can be shared among two people. I like the fact that customers can add the amount black sauce as preferred themselves. The vegetables on top help add colour to the dish and make it even more welcoming.

Add in the black sauce and mix it well. Be careful not to be scalded by the hot claypot.

A generous portion of chicken and sausages was given. The flavours were infused into the rice which was perfectly cooked (not too wet, not too dry). Moreover, with the ability to control the saltiness (through the black sauce). This claypot chicken rice was delicious! The best part was to scrap the burnt and charred rice stuck to the sides of the claypot. Best eaten together with the rice (unburnt) and chicken providing this whole mixture with a crispy and crunchy taste!

On another occasion, I ordered the Claypot Bak Kut Teh.

The Claypot Bak Kut Teh cost just $4.00! So value for money.

Many pieces of pork ribs were in this Claypot Bak Kut Teh. The meat was soft and tender, coming off the bones easily. The soup contained spices, garlic and pepper. However, the soup seems to lack body and the would have been much better if the flavour of spices was enhanced. I still prefer the one at Song Huat.

Wah, I still love their chilli sauce man! The chilli sauce tastes somewhat equivalent to chicken rice chilli sauce, with a tint of garlic and some really spicy chilli to pack a punch. The vegetables are fresh and crunchy, very green as you can see. The chicken is really tender too! Yummy!

Very spicy chilli sauce leh! It left me drinking two cans of drinks. The chilli is really tok kong! The rice and all have the chao ta smell, very good! The chicken meat is very tender also; the chicken skin is very sedap! Rice is not hard, infact very nicely cooked despite being in a claypot.

Had dinner at Yew Chuan Claypot Rice! Wow the claypot rice was real good! The rice is so flavourful, the sauce was just totally merged into the ingredients and all mixed to give you a nice hot pot of yummulicious rice! The sausage was good too! Very generous serving of ingredients such as chicken and sausage. Good!

This big bowl of claypot rice is initially pale in colour. There are black sauce placed on a few of the tables around the stall. We have to mix the rice with the black sauce ourselves.
