Taka Food Hall has several food stalls and small restaurants, particularly Japanese restaurants. While wandering about, I saw a stall with bento sets on display (those possibly made from plastic kind but still resemble the real thing to some extent). With my curiosity piqued, I decided to have lunch there. My friend and I placed our orders first and waited for seats. The staff ensured that the food was served only after we were seated.I loved the overall presentation of the meal, very appealing aesthetically. I had the fish with red bean rice set and it came with miso soup, and a small bowl of salad (the set cost around $12.90). The fish is very fresh and so it did not need much seasoning and the rice tasty, dotted with, of course, red beans. It has quite a sticky texture to it.Given the price paid, I had say it’s a good deal and would go back for more. Yummy and affordable Japanese cuisine. :)Read More

I had one of their combo set for sharing with my sister, thus, we order the set with 2 different carbohydrate, soba and the okawa with scallop set, that comes with fried chicken as well. The soba was so different from what i was expecting! It is served hot, with light soya based soup. Not to my liking as i prefer slightly chewy noodles. For a hot soup dish, the soup was lacking in proper favor. The highlight is of course, the rice. It has a very chewy texture, like glutinous rice, and is properly flavored. There is no need for any other side dishes to goes with it. The only bad point about this shop is that the space is very limited. Finding a seat after ordering might be a problem. Read More

If you're looking for a light and healthy snack to sate any hunger pangs from shopping, then Yonehachi in Takashimaya food hall is the place to go! It boasts a wide variety of traditional Okowa rice, which is steamed mochi rice with various fillings ranging from salmon to red bean. I decided to get the sampler bento set which came with 5 "sushi-sized" pieces of Okowa rice in the various flavours that they had to offer - salmon, prawn, chestnuts, red bean and shellfish. At $8.80 for a box, each piece comes up to be about $1.80 so it's about the price of a piece of sushi. It is definitely best eaten fresh and warm from the stall and my favourite flavour would have to be the salmon one as it was tangy and chewy. The rest were decent and tasted exactly like what their key ingredient is and although I would probably not repurchase the rest of the flavours, if I am ever ready for a light meal in town, this is one of the places I would definitely go. I feel good eating here not just because the fare here is tasty but it is incredibly healthy! Basically this place specialises in Okawa Rice which is sticky rice cooked with beans, vegetables and seaweed. From red beans, chestnuts to salmon and sansai (a type of vegetable), each combination is as delicious as the other. Each set comes with a bwl of miso soup and some pickles. Read More

My favourite place for Japanese styled grilled fish and rice, this place is as good as it is affordable. The cheapest set is the saba fish one at $7.50, but I’m a fan of the Hokke Hiraki Set as the fish tastes so buttery! Each set comes with side of salad, miso soup and free flow of green tea. The fish here is fresh and those who enjoy their fish will truly appreciate it. Read More

Located at B2 Takashimaya Food Hall. It sells different types of okawa, sticky glutinous rice with variety of ingredients. This restaurant is recommended for those who seek traditional Japanese stall that provides Japanese dishes with affordable price. Sometimes it is packed during lunch hour but the waiting time is really considerable short.Try the chestnut okowa @ $7.80Read More

Traditional Okowa rice has a far longer history than that of Ramen in Japan; however we are only familiar with Ramen here ;p Yonehachi is part of a big chain in Japan ,,,Okowa rice is a type of short-grain rice, usually steamed and mixed with beans, chestnuts, sakura, salmon, Hijiki seaweed, vegetable and others. Yonehachi uses top-quality rice from northern Japan like Iwate, Fukushima and Akita. All versions of the rice are availble for takeaway and sold by weight. We each ordered a bento set, around S$13.80. It includes a miso soup, pickles and meat.Seriously Okowa rice is the major attraction and the rest of food is just average. Now, I wish for Okowa rice with grilled eel or cod fish from Chikuwa Tei. This would be good ;pRead More
