Affordable & Healthy Cakes
Naomi Kitchen
2014-01-28
Was thinking of a specially cake to celebrate my dad's birthday hence I did some researching and I came across Naomi Kitchen. This bakery shop hidden under a HDB block in Crawford lane offers really good and affordable cakes. However, one is required to pay a visit to the shop to foot a deposit 2 weeks before the date of collection so as to secure your cake. Either that or your deposit money into their bank account. Nevertheless, $30 for a 1KG fruit cake is really worth it. No regrets at all. They've earned another customer!Other than whole cakes, they also do sell their famous swiss rolls which comes in different flavours that all look so tempting. All are made up of authentic ingredients too! …Read More

Stranger's Reunion
2014-01-28
Visited strangers reunion with a couple of my friends on a Monday afternoon. When we first entered the cafe, the whole place was packed! The staff then asked if we wanted to share a table with others, but we preferred to wait. Some of the staff's attitude and service were really bad and even raised her voice and repeated her question of how many pax even though I've already answered her question. The whole place was really cramped. Seats were uncomfortable, food was on-average, prices were a real rip-off, quantity was small. The only commendable dish I would recommend would probably be the truffle fries. It's really good with the crisp of the fries and the truffle taste engulfing your sense of smell even before your sense of taste kicks in! The quantity is also quite huge.Other than that, I would not be returning to this place again. …Read More

Crisp, Tasty & Healthy Fruit Tarts!
Drips Bakery Cafe
2014-01-28
Went and explore Tiong Bahru area and came across the humble shop entrance of Drips Bakery Cafe. The moment I stepped into the cafe, I was greeted by a scent of dark and intense coffee smell. The interior of the cafe is by far the best decorated one I've seen! The clever use of natural lighting by placing glass on the ceiling and the spaciousness of the whole cafe really makes one feel relaxed.Drips Bakery Cafe is famous for it's Fruit tarts and I can definitely see why.Blackberry & Raspberry Tart - $8.60They are extremely generous with the toppings! I can't even see the tart fillings! Even though it is slightly costlier as compared to other tarts but the cost of the fruits makes the tart truly worthy of the price paid. The fruits were really fresh and are coated with a layer of frozen sugar (If I'm not mistaken). The tart skin is by far the most unique one I've ever tasted. They aren't your 3 for $3 Egg tart kind of base, these are especially tasty and addictive!! Must try!!…Read More

Affordable buffet with quite a selection!
Chiso Zanmai
2013-11-11
Chiso Zanmai is a Japanese buffet situated at Central, Clarke Quay. It is by far one of the most affordable japanese buffet in Singapore! The price for the various timings and days are as follows: Their buffet line changes every month, so you wouldn’t feel sick of it heading back there monthly! The ambience of the restaurant was really great! It’s floor to ceiling glass windows reaches up 2-storeys high! This allows adequate light to shine in, really increasing one’s appetite. Furthermore, there ain’t any pillars or corners as obstructions. The seating area is a semi-circle area with the seats widely spread apart.Food-wise, they had much varieties to offer, ranging from fried (fried chicken cutlets) to soup-base (ramen) to steamed food items (CHAWAMUSHI). Having looked through other reviews of this restaurant, it seems that this round, there is a lesser variety of food selection as compared to other reviewers. However, I would still patronise Chiso Zanmai again because basically it’s food items really matches my taste and the price is really reasonable!! - Affordable Price- Easily suits one’s taste- Great Ambience- Slow in topping up food- Misses on some food items- Hard to locateFULL REVIEW @ www.sgglutton.blogspot.com…Read More

Big Bites,
Big Bites
2013-10-28
Happened to chance upon an online deal which offers prata, naan, thosai and chapati buffet at Big Bites just for $4.90 per pax. Seeing that it is even available on weekends, I decided to purchase the offer for my family of four. The restaurant can be easily located, just 5 mins from Little India MRT, right opposite Tekka Market. It is situated at a corner of a shophouse, occupying both levels. Quite surprisingly, it wasn't crowded when we went there on a Saturday at 11.30a.m. There were still plenty of seats available. The staff later advised us that we should have made a booking and we should have came after 12.30p.m as the naan and chapati were only served then. This of which the deal did not state. Therefore we decided to order a mushroom and a chocolate prata followed up a mushroom thosai. The prata was quite plain as this restaurant is a vegetarian restaurant and therefore there isn't the nice smelling taste that you get when you eat other prata. The chocolate prata which was served had only a small amount of chocolate drizzled onto the prata. This occurred to the onion prata which we ordered after that also. The onion was merely sprinkled on top of the prata but not fried together with it.The thosai on the other hand was quite spectacular. It's one of the largest and longest thosai I have ever seen! However, I suppose I'm not really accustomed to eating the various types of curry as I find them a tad to sour for my liking. As stated earlier, this restaurant is pure vegetarian and hence there aren't any meat-flavoured curries available. The curries used were chickpeas and onion (if I'm not mistaken). It's really healthy!Overall, the food satisfaction wasn't really good, but I enjoyed sitting on the 2nd floor of the shop house all relaxed, watching the bustling street of Little India.…Read More

Mad For Garlic
2013-10-27
One of my friends informed me of a 1-for-1 promotion for DBS/POSB card members going on for Mad for Garlic during weekdays. Therefore we decided to head down for dinner. Location-wise, it is situated at a corner of the newly-renovated Suntec City Mall. Upon heading in, the whole place was quite dark and dim as the walls were black and there wasn't really much lightings. Made me feel like sleeping instead of eating. We then enquired the promotion details of the 1-for-1 and were informed that only 1 can be used per table. However there were 4 of us, therefore we could only use the promotion of 2 items. The 1-for-1 only applies when you purchase a pizza and you'll receive a pizza equal or of lower value compared to the item. We had no choice but to go ahead with our orders. We ordered the Snow Garlic Pizza, Spicy Seafood Fried Rice and Small Shrimp pizza. After serving the pizzas, the service staff would grind cheese onto the pizza right in front of you! Quite a unique and spectacular sight! However, the pizzas were extremely thin. Personally, I think 1 person can finish one whole pizza by him/herself! Nevertheless, the pizza was really tasty and yummy. The garlic flakes weren't too strong of garlic.I doubt I'll return to this place if I want a huge serving…Read More

Classy packaging and well-prepared mooncakes
BAKERZIN
2013-10-27
I was really fortunate to have won the mooncake competition by OpenRice and my reward was none other than mooncakes! Specifically, 4 of Bakerzin's mooncake.I must say that Bakerzin has really put a lot of thought into designing their packaging for the mooncakes. It looks really stylish and classy. After consumption, one can use the box for other purposes too! The mooncake imprints of rabits and the way it is shaped (round and oval) allows one to easily differentiate which is the one with or without egg yolk.Futhermore, all of it's mooncakes are vacuum-sealed which lengthens it's freshness as mooncakes are on the heaty (and high calorie, with all the sweetness) and therefore would take quite a period of time to finish. Nevertheless, it was really enjoyable having Bakerzin's mooncake.Thank you OpenRice! …Read More

Great service recovery + Great chef = Great EXP!
Smoulder
2013-10-25
After hearing about the many great reviews on TV and social media, I decided to make reservations for a box of 9 lava cakes as a unique cake to celebrate my sis's birthday. I called them 2 days in advance to make the order and providing my preferred choice of flavours and they returned the call indicating that they have noted my preferences. On the day itself, I went to collect the cakes but apparently there were only 5 flavours and I had no choice but to choose from the flavours I initially did not wanted. I was quite disappointed with regards to this incident. After writing in to them, the Smoulders Team was very kind to provide me with a complimentary box of lava cakes and even advised me when I should collect the cakes in order to have the most flavours. (Psst, that day would be Wednesday - Thursday)Really kudos and thumbs up to their service recovery. With regards to the cake, it will make you go "Mmm!" The freshness of the cake, the richness of the ingredients really shapes up how gorgeous this cake is. I really like how creative the chefs are, constantly coming up with new, colourful cakes to add on to their line of lava cakes. This is definitely a 'will-return' experience that I am looking forward to!…Read More

Chocolate Origin
2013-08-14
Browsed the web to look for good cakes to buy for my mum's birthday when I chanced about Chocolate Origin with it's nicely and simply done layout. This is as shown in the cakes produced too. Nothing fanciful, just a whole cake covered in good quality dark chocolate that is oh-so good. The blend of bitterness and sweetness in each bite just brings you near to heaven. Even though it is located in the city area, it is surprisingly affordable too. Since I was at the shop, I decided to try the widely talked about Chocolate lava and Vanilla ice cream which they are famous for also. It is really unimaginable how it's created as the ice cream is cold at the bottom while the chocolate lava cake at the top is hot! That being said, the ice cream doesn't melt! It truly is a wonderful creation with every bite filled with hotness and coldness. …Read More

Too much hype
Armenian Street Char Kway Teow
2013-07-13
After hearing about it on one of the television shows, I decided to head down to give my verdict on it. I'm a real fussy eater on Char Kway Teow. Upon reaching, the queue was right till the entrance of the coffeeshop. I joined the queue and only managed to get my plate of Char Kway Teow 30 mins later. The chef still went and took a 15 minutes smoking break while he kept all the people in line waiting. For $3 a plate, I'd say is not one that I would return for. The Char Kway Teow was really normal. There isn't the wok taste on the Char Kway Teow. Nothing too fanciful about this plate of Char Kway Teow. Perhaps the successor of this Armenian Street Char Kway Teow lost the touch from the owner. …Read More

Best Muffins ever tasted!!
Chocolat N' Spice
2013-07-13
Hidden in a tucked away hawker centre, Chocolat' N Spice houses one of the best muffins I have ever tried! 3 Reasons why I love Chocolat' N Spice's muffins:1) It is huge!2) It is tasty and has fillings inside3) IT IS CHEAP! ($1.20 - $1.40/muffin)All their muffins are really rich in flavour and are all baked on the spot! The Banana Walnut contains a piece of banana in the very heart of the muffin and it is topped with crunchy walnuts. I really enjoy how they prepare the Chocolate chip and Double-Chocolate muffins whereby the chips aren't the hard ones, but they are melted to perfection like the ones found in chocolate lava cakes. This is a must-buy whenever I pass by Shunfu Mart! But be prepared to expect queues of about 20 mins. The popular flavours like the Double-Chocolate, Chocolate and Banana Walnut are always sold out! Be there early!…Read More

Peaceful Dining
Izzi Restaurant & Bar
2013-07-08
Being a student in Ngee Ann Polytechnic, it took me close to 2 years when I had to work on a project for this restaurant before I even found out this existed. Located on the top of the hill, Izzi Restaurant & Bar really provides diners with the peace and serenity one would enjoy while dining. For those who enjoy sunlight, they can dine in Izzi Restaurant & Bar's external dining area which is enclosed using glass and spared from the hot weather of Singapore with air-condition installed. TV's are also made available for diners to kill entertain themselves while waiting for their food to arrive. There was a real shortage of service staff as only 1 staff were available to attend to us at the external dining area which houses about 50 seats. Fortunately for the few customers, the service staff was still able to manage by himself.Food-wise, portions were somewhat acceptable but the food was really delicious, makes you wanting more! I tried their chargrilled chicken with baked potato and mac and cheese as the 2 sides. The baked potato could have used more toppings whereas the mac and cheese was cooked to perfection. The stickiness from the cheese complemented the macaroni very well!! Being a student of Ngee Ann Polytechnic, i had a further 10% discount of the listed prices so it's very affordable!…Read More

Miserable Quantity
NeNe Chicken
2013-07-08
Came across the hype about this famous fast food chicken outlet based in Korea which was newly opened in Star Vista. The outlet was a small one and can accommodate about 15 pax only. Waiting time for the food also takes quite a while but the service staff is forthcoming whereby they informed me about the expected waiting time for the chicken. I tried the swicy chicken which was supposedly sweet and spicy. The chicken parts they use are not your huge KFC chicken parts, they are more similar to nasi lemak kind of chicken, small drumstick and wings. I felt that there wasn't any wow factor about the taste of the chicken. The sauce seems quite ordinary and i would go for KFC which is more value for money and easy on the pockets also.…Read More

Affordable Set Lunch
Jack's Place
2013-07-08
Having a western restaurant in neighbourhood malls are really rare. What's even more rare is that it offers delicious food at really value for money prices! Be it their set lunch which includes a soup of the day, a piece of garlic bread, main course, dessert and tea at less than $20! Their dinner is not that worth as compared to their lunches as it does not come in a set. I ate their Grilled Chicken on a Sizzling Hot Plate. I must say that it was grilled to my liking whereby the meat is a bit crisp on the outside before you chew into the tender meat on the inside. It really tasted great! However, the environment is not very conducive for eating as the outlet is very small and hence they tend to squeeze more seats and hence it's very uncomfortable especially when you have to make way for people entering or leaving. Lights were also a bit too dim and it kinds of takes my appetite away as the food looks bland …Read More

Everything with Fries
2013-07-05
The atmosphere is great as it is an open-concept kind of restaurant. However, seats are quite limited and be prepared to share seats especially during lunch time with their affordable lunch set meals.Tried their Tandoori Chicken Burger with Sour Cream and Onion Fries. As can be seen from the shop's name, being specialised in fries, the quantity of fries provided is really huge! The tandoori chicken is really succulent with the juice of the tandoori bursting in your mouth with every bite. The chicken meat is also not too dry. But a word of caution, you gotta get your hands dirty on this one as it is quite a hassle to eat with fork and knife.…Read More
