Gathering @ Ikoi Restaurant
Ikoi Japanese Restaurant
2010-12-20
The place is rather small and crammed when i visited it at 8 pm, after having made a reservation for 10. I've been there half a year ago for the lunch buffet and was a little disappointed to find that the menu hasn't changed a bit. And because the menu doesn't change, point to note is that price for the lunch and dinner buffet is the same. The ala carte buffet ensures everything that is served to u is fresh, especially the sashimi. However, due to the dinner crowd, serving is rather slow. I believe it is their gimmick to serve 'complimentary' soups while waiting for quite some time for the sashimi to be served. Feel bloated and you won't order so much. 1 must-try is the grilled tomato-bacon yaki-tori. The tomato is grilled till ripe but still juicy, paired with the bacon that isn't too salty nor fatty. Perfect meat-veg combination. Overall, the staff may be polite but not sincere. …Read More

Lui Cha @ Boon Lay Place
Traditional Hakka Lui Cha
2010-12-14
The most important part of lui cha is the tea, and this stall manages to make it just nice. Not too bitter and not too diluted. However, the amount of salt in the tea varied on the few occasions that I patronised that stall. The diced vegetables are fried not too oily and the rice is cooked just right, so this dish is really simple and healthy. The health-conscious ones can opt to have your lui cha with brown rice by paying 50 cents extra too. The down side is that Lui Cha is the only thing that this stall sells, unlike some others that will serve other Hakka dishes like beancurd or yong tau foo. …Read More

Crab feast @ Mellben
Mellben Seafood (Ang Mo Kio)
2010-12-14
Mellben is obviously famous for its crabs!!! The crab bee hoon is a white creamy soup-based dish, somewhat different from the dry, brown fried bee hoon commonly found. Can pay more for extra servings of bee hoon or soup. The butter crab is also a must-try! Best eaten with deep friend mini buns to soak up and savour the buttery sauce! The down side is the long queue that forms during dinner times. Avoid the waiting time by calling up to make a booking in advance. The staff is chatty and friendly too, which makes the dining experience more light-hearted and enjoyable. As most of the tables are outdoors, it is advisable to visit the place when the weather is fine and cooling. The 'tze-char' style Melben is more suitable for families or groups of friends.…Read More

Lunch experience @ Gaia
Gaia Korean Restaurant
2010-12-14
The lunch experience @ Gaia was a great one. The boss, an old and friendly korean man, came to chat and introduced the dishes to us when he found out we were there for the first time few years back. Interesting fact to note is that the kimchi is prepared by the lady boss herself. It is best to go with a group of friends, as the portion of food is rather big ( given the price you pay). Very authentic korean food …Read More

Dining experience @ Dian Xiao Er JP
Dian Xiao Er
2010-12-13
The roast duck is the signature must try! The skin is crispy and not too oily. The meat is surprisingly succulent and tender, unlike many roast ducks elsewhere that are usually dry and tough. The special menu prawn balls in seaweed and pork floss is an interesting dish that is worth trying. But be prepared to get thirsty after a meal at Dian Xiao Er! The service staff are very friendly. When my frens and I brought a cake into the restaurant, the sharp-eyed staff initiated to keep it in the fridge. When we requested to cut the cake, forks and plates were prepared for us immediately without prompting. A service-oriented place!…Read More

Lunch hour experience @ Itacho
Itacho Sushi
2010-12-13
The menu offer a few special items like the cod liver sushi, raw beef sushi which are not commonly found! The mini rice bowls are also good for people who like to try a little of everything. The salmon spring roll seems to be a fushion of vietnamese rice roll with raw salmon, an interestingly refreshing combi worth trying. I am surprised that they do really offer the promotional 40 cents salmon soya sauce sushi, as I'd assumed it is only used as a promotion gimmick and would say out of stock when u order them, like in many dining places. However, the queue can be rather slow moving during peak hours, and the food takes rather long time to arrive. Nonetheless, the food is fresh and rather worth the wait.…Read More
