Happy Boy Soya Bean  Smile Sep 18, 2013

Recently when I went to Boon Lay market food centre, I saw this beancurd stall that was selling chilled beancurd in many different flavours. I wasn't sure how many there are but I saw flavours like mango, almond, green tea, taro, strawberry. I got the original flavour as I always like to try the plain flavour before venturing into other flavours. The chilled beancurd is not too sweet, at least, not as sweet as some other beancurd that I had before. Also, it is not too watery and most of it is firm beancurd. Like all other beancurds, it is also smooth to the bite. I think I would like to try the green tea flavour the next time I am there. The cost for one tub is $2.

Spending per head: Approximately $2

Egg Custard Smile Sep 18, 2013

After the dim sum feast, we continued on with our food journey at Chinatown and we stopped by Mei Heong Yuen for desserts. I have tried their pastes before but not their egg pudding so on a whim, I decided to try it. The egg pudding ($3) was served quite fast. The egg pudding is really smooth and delicate and when you cut into the pudding, it is very smooth as well. Eating it is very easy as glides down my throat. The pudding is not too sweet and I love it. If you like ginger, you can choose to have it with ginger. Next time, I will try it as I think the ginger would bring out the taste of the egg pudding even more with the contrast in taste.

Delicious Dim Sums Smile Sep 18, 2013

I was introduced to this dim sum at Chinatown by one of my colleagues who frequently goes there for his dim sum fix. As I only had my wife with me, we ordered a few dishes to share, the har gow, siew mai, yam cake, century egg porridge and deep fried prawn roll with beancurd skin. Of all the dishes that we ordered, my favourite one is the yam cake and the har gow. The yam cake is topped spring onions, dried shrimps and bits of chinese sausage. Eaten as a whole, the taste is really good. Also the yam cake is quite soft and there are bits of yam inside. It is flavourful on its own without having to add any chili or sweet sauce. My other favourite dish is the har gow because of the crunchy prawns which has a lot of bite. The filling is made using prawns and not prawn/meat paste. The har gow skin is also very thin and soft which is basically what a good har gow should be. For good and affordable dim sum, Tak Po is definitely my choice.

Tiny portions Cry Sep 18, 2013

My colleague and I decided to dine in at Bangkok Jam as we saw quite a lot of customers and thought that the food should be pretty alright to attract so many customers. We are able to get seats quite easily since there is only two of us. We made our order for a Clear Seafood tom yum soup $7.90, Thai olive fried rice $11 and Seafood Phad Thai $11.90. The tom yum soup was the first to arrive and we are quite disappointed to note that the ingredients are measly with only two small prawns, two small pieces of sotong and minimal vegetables (mushroom, tomato). I think it is far too stingy and also, the soup is not fantastic. It is not spicy at all. Luckily, my phad thai was alright. It is quite moist and it is very easy to slurp it down. The noodles also have a good bite in them. The ingredients that are included in the phad thai are prawns which are quite fresh and bouncy. However like the tom yum soup, I felt that the portion was very little. I was only around 60% full after eating my phad thai. I would probably not come again because it is not worth the price.

Chicken Pies OK Sep 18, 2013
Categories : American | Bakery | Hawker Centre | Kids-Friendly

I ordered a box chicken pies $20 from Baker's Oven Pattisieries to bring to office for a function. I ordered this because I saw from the website that there are 5 different types of chicken pies and I thought it will satisfy most people in office. The 5 different flavours are chicken, black pepper chicken, vegetables, chicken mushroom and char siew chicken. It was warm when I bought it but by the time I reached office, it was cold. I got the cleaner lady to help us toast in the over and it was as good as fresh. The chicken pie is quite large and the outer pastry is quite crispy when it is warm. I ate the chicken mushroom flavour and I thought it was tasty as the chicken is well marianated and the button mushrooms are quite juicy. However, like one of the previous reviewers mentioned, the filling is quite little so it would be better if there is more filling. Most of the time, it was just pastry in my mouth and not much of the filling.
