Rojak, Ban Chang Kueh, Char Kway Teow, Chendol....I didn't expect the number of food stalls at TANGS basement to increase to the scale of a food court all of a sudden.
It was an unplanned decision to dine-in there with Pretty Mum as we were merely there to browse and buy some kitchen gadgets. With a weakness for all things Peranakan and spicy, we found a quick spot to try one of the stalls, Peramakan, since we only tried its Nyonya Buns and Kuehs from its takeaway outlet in Joo Chiat few years ago
The Nyonya Mee Siam ($6) is both tart and tangy, served with the powerful chincalok sauce for the extra kick. This dry version may be quite scarce on the ingredients like shrimps, etc. but it tastes even more flavorful than the usual wet Mee Siam. Even Pretty Mum who is super picky about her mee siam gave her thumb of approval.
Looking at the display of assorted chap chye and rendang, we could not resist the temptation but ordered some to go along with the Mee Siam (3 assorted dishes with rice at $7.80). Unfortunately, out of the 3 choices, I only enjoyed the Nyonya Chap Chye. The Pineapples Assam Fish was not fresh and it was difficult to ignore the powdery texture of the fish. Meanwhile, the Curry Vegetables could do with less coconut milk.
Interestingly, Peramakan has introduced a new series of French pastries with an Asian twist, on top of their already wide variety of kuehs and cakes. I instantly picked the two massive Cream Puffs in Teh Halia and Kopi Susu ($4.50), which sounded intriguing and unique.......

Just as most people will bee-line for Chao Zhou Fishball Noodle, I thought Lau Pa Sat Fishball Minced Meat Noodles is also another unexpected good find in the hawker center. There were only two options; either Fishball minced meat or Mushroom minced meat at $3/$4.
It was a quick decision for me to pick the Fishball minced meat noodles since the stall was named after it.
The Mee Pok here is thinner than the average Mee Pok and could easily be mistaken as yellow noodles.Yet they were fresh and toothsome, perhaps even outshining the classic meepok. There was no trace of vinegar but the punchy chilli and soy sauce contributed to a tremendous bowl that caught me swooshing up the noodles in delight.
A wild fistful of cilantro, pork liver, minced meats and crispy pork bits made for a nice recalibration of the palate. But what I liked most is the generous addition juicy shrimp dumplings and He Kiao, which is less visible in bak chor Mee these days.
The only problem seemed to lie in the fishballs that were not very springy. But nonetheless, it's a very huge and satisfying bowl that sustained my enthusiasm right to the end.

Comforting Mexican Soul Food OK Jun 19, 2015

The Red Snapper Burritos ($25) made a stunning entrance like a curvy oblong-shaped parcel, only to reveal a luscious interior of fish, borraco beans, Mexican rice and strands of Mozzarella-cheddar melting mid-way. This could be a potentially great dish if the snapper was not too dry.

The standout dish was the Shredded Steak Chimchangas ($25), a golden crispy flour tortilla that is deep-fried to perfection such that it kept the juicy strands of beef warm and comfortable while displaying resilience any sogginess. Drenched in generous amount of sour cream and guacamole, this giant plate of meaty "Popiah" roll is messy but speaks right to your soul.
I don't fancy banana desserts but I may have to take back my statement on the Banana Chimichangas ($14) here. Just like the earlier savoury chimichanga, the filling is substituted with bananas, deep fried till the shell turned into a crunchy fritter. Wallop a huge scoop of fragrant and buttery avocado ice cream and you'll get something that is ten times better than any chocolate lava cake or any hot-cold dessert. With a good selection of Mexican special cocktails and Margaritas, it is not surprising to see that business is booming even on a Tuesday night.

Amidst the competitive Korean fried chicken scene in Singapore, FRESH chicken is no longer the key to success. Bring on the CHEESE, WHIPPED CREAM and the secret weapon--SWEET POTATO.

I wonder if it is due to Singaporeans love for all things creamy and cheese because there are several items of the menu that contains either cheese or cream. One good example is the Nest Snow ($32.90), a bizarre yet wonderfully tasty mountain of Cajun chicken tenders served in a bubbling hot plate of Parmesan, mozzarella and cheddar. To top it all off, a swirl of whipped cream and sprinkles of cheese shavings.
But Chir Chir (pronounced chee-ru chee-ru) does not stop at that. It had secretly ambushed a lump of mash SWEET POTATO beneath the chickens. There was no way one could escape from the intense cheesy-ness of this dish, but the presence of something sweet pulled your senses back into shape. If this was spiced with Chilli flakes, I think I'll be weeping at its culinary blasphemy.

I experienced a mental block again after an unforgettable evening of gastronomic feast whipped up by Chef Matthew at his new hideout called the Rabbit Stash, a fine-dining restaurant bar situated right at the rooftop of Wangz hotel. The first thing that struck me at first was the rabbit candies that many of us used to eat during our childhood years. But what impressed me even more was the originality of his cuisine--a marriage of French techniques and Asian-Singaporean flavours, infused with his passion for food and the aesthetics.
