Go for Tiramisu  OK Feb 08, 2014

Matt's The Chocolate Shop is a shop which anyone can easily overlook along the stretch of near identical office-like shops at Amoy Street. The short opening hours meant that I had to zoom here within my hour-lunch break, but luckily with the accompaniment of another chocolate lover colleague.

Although they are famous for their Chocolate Cake ($4), it tasted like a normal cake to me. The ganache was too thin while the cupcake-sized chocolate base was not as dense nor moist as I thought. Not sure if it was because local chocolate was used (as informed by the staff) but the proportion of ganache to cake is too off-balanced. But some might like this simple, no-frills cake.

Though the Pandan Cake with Gula Melaka Dressing ($3.50) did not look like the gorgeous bundt shaped version on their FB page, it tasted better than expected. Our piece was drenched with a fair amount of gula Melaka, which helped to moisten the cake without overpowering the pandan flavour. My favourite part? The crispy brown crumb coating.

The best vote goes to the Tiramisu ($7). My partner was surprised at the instant aroma of cocoa once she lifted the cap. Though there is only one layer sponge and cream, the coffee liquor taste was stronger than most places and soaked every pocket of the sponge thoroughly. Despite being consumed right out of the chiller, the cream was soft and luscious. I regretted not going for the double-layer at $10

Overall, the most anticipated chocolate fudge cake turned out to be a disappointment. But I am happy to discover a decent tiramisu here. And one good thing is that everything was not too sweet.
Yes, they sell chocolate truffles too but I am hesitant about them. Visit: http://dairycream.blogspot.jp/2014/01/matts-chocolate-shop.html for full post and pics

Brunch with the Horses Smile Feb 08, 2014

Riders Cafe is one of the earlier brunch spots which was so popular that reservations have to be placed in advance. Fortunately and coincidentally, there was a table cancellation when I called on the previous day of visit and so we did not have much problems securing seats.

The usual brunch suspects were delicious and certainly lived up to the predominantly positive comments that were aplenty in the media or online community.

Brioche French Toast with Fresh Berries and Vanilla Mascarpone $14 are great for those who like to start the day on a sweet note. The alternative french toast option comes with maple butter, smoked bacon and burnt bananas.

Unlike "The Usual" ($16), Black stone Benedict ($15) comes with the extra hollandaise sauce on poached eggs and crispy bacon instead of bangers and mushrooms. To me, hollandaise sauce is the supporting cast that makes the leading cast (soft poached eggs with bursting egg yolk) shine.

I had been tempted all along to challenge the Death by Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Ice cream $12 but I was disillusioned eventually. This won by quantity and not quality. The chocolate ganache was not velvety and stood unmoving like a rubbery coating. There was not much contrast in the taste because everything from the cake to the ice cream was cloyingly sweet.

Instead, the Salted Caramel Cheesecake with Crumbled Honeycomb $8 would attract one to take a second bite or even more. The cheesecake itself tasted as natural as it could get, without too much sugar added. Would be ideal if there is more of the salted caramel frosting.

Special items of the day are written on the black board. Even though many other brunch spots and cafe have sprouted incessantly in Singapore, Riders Cafe is a good option for brunch or even dinner with the accompaniment of horses. But the location is only convenient if you can find your way there in a car or by a taxi.

All About Chocolates Smile Jan 18, 2014

I don't know what is the secret cold-poach method used for this Cold poached chocolate $6.00 but it is simply a velvety semi-solidified chocolate ganache.

It was my favourite out of the rest, because it was just pure chocolate goodness without any obstructions in the mouth.

The saltiness of the Salted Butterscotch Blondie Brownie $6.90 did not strike out as much as I would have thought. But the delectable fudgy, chewy texture after microwaving makes it one of the earliest cake to be wiped off the plate.

On the other hand, the bulky Hazelnut Crumble with a cookie base $6.90 is not something that you will like on the first bite, but the bittersweet taste gradually crawled in. What I like most is the top crumble layer, which was why I bought it initially. But apart from that, I would still pick the Butterscotch Blondie.

The White Chocolate Creme Brûlée ($6.90) which was served in a ramekin dish, is now in a the form of tart like their Chocolate Tart. But ooh...this would be one of the sweetest dessert I would remember for life. So sweet that I would avoid at all cost the next time.

The White Chocolate Butterscotch Block ($6.50) is not something new on the menu but I wanted to recall its taste. This is fairly good one when you have it with the dense brownies because the light fluffy texture of Swiss roll sponge and the sweet-salty butterscotch cream helps to balance the richness of the latter. But the white chocolate layer tasted more like buttercream instead of fresh cream which I would prefer.

And surprisingly, after having ALL these except the Creme brûlée in one sitting, I was not hit with any chocolate concussion as my previous visit for Fullerton Chocolate Buffet.

Hope that when I return there will be new items to try too!

Chocolate Irony Cry Jan 18, 2014

Visit http://dairycream.blogspot.jp/2013/11/wimbly-lu.html for full review and picsUntil now, I still do not know why this place is so popular. Ironically, the desserts did not impress even though Wimbly Lu is famous for them.

The Hazelnut Butterscotch Blondie ($4.50) was too dry and chalky with rancid untoasted nuts though the butterscotch sauce was rich and sweet.

I don't understand the logic of molten lava cakes $6without ice cream or creme anglaise sauce but I know some do. The version here is very rich, dense and luckily not too sweet. However, the cake texture was still dry as compared to Domino's or Morgansfield.

The Chocolate Tofu Cake $6 did not taste anything of tofu but I guessed the ingredient blended into the mousse did help to give it a smooth, creamy texture. However, the biscuit base was stale and not crunchy as described by the staff.

With a crisp texture and some even noted a resemblance with cereal taste, the signature waffles with one scoop ice cream ($8.50) was the better ones that day. I wonder if the salted caramel ice cream came from Salted Caramel at Upp Thomson though. But it was too small a scoop for the size of the waffles.

Mediocre Cheese Toast Melts which can be skipped

Another recommended item was the Chocolate Root Beer Cake $6. Think layers of root-beer-infused ganache intersecting with chocolate sponge. I like chocolate and root beer. But the combination of both tasted strange.

Blackout Cake $6
Bottomline, a cafe that is simply over-rated. Perhaps it is crowded because the seats are limited. My companions were generous to comment that the ambience was good, for instance the settings such as the red bricks tiled wall and lightings. But I tend to ignore ambience and focus on the food. Given the substandard quality of the chocolate desserts, I would not fancy a return. Visit http://dairycream.blogspot.jp/2013/11/wimbly-lu.html for full review and pics

Reworking the Chilli OK Jan 18, 2014

Categories : Coffeeshop | Chicken Rice

Visit http://dairycream.blogspot.jp/2013/11/ming-kee-chicken-rice-porridge.html for full review and pics.
After Tian Tian Chicken Rice, I think this must be the stall which will actually require people to queue for more than 30min. We queued for exactly 40min slightly before 5pm on a Sunday afternoon. Why the long queue? Well, this appeared in "Where the Queue Starts" and the price is really cheap.

We ordered half a chicken ($12), chicken feet ($3), bean sprouts aka taugeh($3). Each plate of rice costs 50cent. What's good: The chicken. Admittedly not as good as kampung chicken but the meat was chilled tender and juicy. A good antidote against the sweltering heat inside the stuffy hawker centre.

bean sprouts aka taugeh($3).
One won't find chicken hanging at the stall because they are all submerged in cold water before serving (versus hanging upside down at Tian Tian) The knife skills were also considerably above average. The rice was not as greasy as Boon Tong Kee but still fragrant especially with sweet soy sauce, though some might find the grains hard. But, the problem for us was the diluted chilli which seemed to be prepared half-heartedly. Old Ma stated that the chilli should be really superb to the extent that one can finish an entire plate of chicken rice without the chicken.

In short, this place is definitely not the best chicken rice in town. Worth queuing for the price but not for the taste. Visit http://dairycream.blogspot.jp/2013/11/ming-kee-chicken-rice-porridge.html for full review
