Hot & Cold Cheng Tng Smile Aug 05, 2013

This is probably the most special Cheng Tng that I ever enjoyed in Singapore. Ye Lai Xiang is Occupying 2 units in Bedok Food Centre, with one specialised in its Cuttlefish gangkong and the other its Cheng Tng. These 2 stalls are situated side by side.

With the business solely survived on one dish, Cheng Tng, the snaking queues had its popularity best explained.

Served in a traditional thick glass bowl, the bowl of Cheng Tng is indeed no ordinary. Refreshing as the name sounds, the "tng" (sound) packs with sweet hints of dried longan with barley, sweet potato, mung beans, winter melon stripes, sago, dried pessimmon strip, gingko nut and white fungus as its ingredients. One can opt for the hot or cold version. The special part of the chilled Cheng Tng is its little ice cubes that maintains a good chilling temperature throughout instead of the usual shave ice we have.

Cost: S$2.00 / bowl

Our pal had decided to treat the rest of us a Zhi Char Dinner to celebrate his next milestone in life (Just Married) and Sin Hoi Sai Eating House was voted for its well known reputation . Although it was not the peak hours for a proper dinner, we were informed that no internal seating were available for the 9 + 1 (9 Adults + 1 Toddler) of us. There goes our opportunity to dine in a cooler environment after a hot day of work and welcome the Alfresco Dining!

Our first dish was served, Kangkong Belacan and it comes without any serving of rice initially. Look at the stir fried Chinese spinach, they are mixed together with fermented shrimp paste and dried shrimp. You cant miss out it's crunchiness! This dish is not that spicy too!

I was kind of surprised by how they served this dish. Hotplate with tofu was served covered initially and was opened when it reached our table. The simple looking plain dish was given a "great pour" full with minced meat gravy and followed by the sizzling sound of the hotplate. The gravy especially with minced meat, makes a perfect match with our bowls of plain rice.

Cereal Prawns , the deep fried prawns in better, is one of the famous dish in most Ci Zhar restaurant . Prawns are fresh and mixed with aplenty of richly textured crunchy oat flakes. Some like to eat with the shell while some chose to remove them before consumption. Enjoy these hot stuff without the use of utensils, they are absolutely finger licking good!

Heh Chor (Prawn Roll) were equally good - Impressive and not too oily. It wont go wrong with them dipped into the sweet sauce that come along with the plate!

Service rendered was great and attentive. One of our chopsticks dropped onto the floor, the next moment a chopstick came as a replacement! smile. When the bills are cleared, the staff will actually place a sign on the table to thank their customer for the patronage.

(1) Take a chance to visit their toilet, you may find their toilet sink rather interesting.
(2) Parking maybe an issue as the lots are limited, be early.
(3) For those who are dinning in big groups, do remember to make reservations if you want to enjoy the air-conditioned dining environment.

The word "Kazan" is known as volcano in Japanese. The numerous newpaper printouts had actually caught my attention as I walked past Tonkotsu Kazan Ramen. Initially I thought that Kazan is actually referring to its level of spiciness - as hot as volcano but as when I took a close look, I realised the "fun" in the meal and decided to give it a try.

"Irrashaimase" - a very loud and warm welcome greeted us upon stepping into the restaurant and gave a very good first impression. Secondly, the server came welcoming us with its menu. Tonkotsu Kazan Ramen was well decorated with the classic feel of a Japanese Ramen Stall similar to what I had visited in Japan. Not only was the utensils and cookery stuffs placed neatly, the ambience was well lited and rather quiet which served as a perfect place to dine over the weekends to keep away from the bustle of the city.

Do help yourself with the freeflow of seasonings on the table ranging from vinegar to shoyu and they even provide garlic with the garlic press for their customers to enhance the taste of their dish.

Proper instructions were pasted on the table to guide and share with customers how to cook a delicious kazan ramen. It had also advised customers customer to stay away from the hot stone bowl.

We ordered the classic Shoyu Ramen to have a taste of its original Tonkotsu broth as it was mentioned on the menu that the broth was enhanced with a special blended soy sauce paste. Each strand of smooth and springy ramen is delectably coated with a flavourful broth. This aromatic broth somehow reminds me of a famous Ramen Stall located in Tanjong Pagar area! Yums!
Cost: S$12.00

I had ordered one of its signature dish, Curry Kazan and the long awaited volcanic eruption performance is about to commenced. The dish was initially served in a hot stone pot and the server had pour half a pot of curry into it, covered it up with the hood and about one minute later, he poured the remaining curry into the stone pot again. Timing was all measured by the little hour glass device on the table as seen in the picture).

The hood was then remove and "ta-da", take a look the end product and enjoy the sizzling sound in the video.

The Pipping Hot Kazan Ramen!

Not only we have to be caution on the pipping hot stone pot, we have to be additional careful and keep a distance from the curry as they may follow the "sizzling" sound and stain our clothing. Do also note that my meal comes with additional bowl of rice to goes along with the remaining curry as the portion is enormous for me, I suggest that the meal can be shared by 2 instead! tongue
Last but not least, if you are thinking of having green tea in this Japanese restaurant, you can find alternatives as green tea is not available in its menu.

The total bill for the night including 10% of Service Charge and 7% GST is well spent for the night as I really enjoyed every bit of the meal.

After rounds of praises given to Jurong Point's Bakerzin for their great service. My neighbour had decided to give me a treat in Bakerzin so as to "claim" my overdue treat. tongue

A glass of Bakerzin's House Lemonade with hints of minty flavours from the leaves, frizzing and refreshingly great!
Cost: S$5.90

The Chef Salad is made up of dried cranberries, walnuts with cut honey baked ham, roast beef, turkey, red onions tossed with homemade dressing and topped with a molten lava chilled hard boiled egg. Eggs were served separately from the plate of appetizing salad but when it comes altogether in a dish, these eggs does really steals the scene, giving a slight warmth that lifts the entire dish.

Rather amazed by the egg as they were cooked perfectly with the yolks runny in the middle surrounded by slightly firm edges. I though these kind of serving could only be found in a Japanese restaurant.

As part of the set meal promotion, a slice of cake will cost S$4.50 instead of its original S$6.50 pricing, limited to one set per slice. Why not pamper ourselves with these sweet treats for the night?

Bakerzin's Black Forest cake features the classic taste with dark sweet cherries added within the cream cheese and hints of bitter taste from the dark cocoa powder. Light Mascarpone cheese and Ella & Vire cream is used too. Those chocolates flakes sprinkled with powder reminds one of a romantic cold winter.

A high level of service standard is still observed, attentive, polite and friendly. As the chef salad contains beef, the server gave me a gentle reminded and asked if it was alright for me. Perfect!

The total damage for the night, everything is well worth it. Thanks pal!

Impressive service!  Smile Jul 11, 2013

Categories : Bakery

I was very surprised on the level of service I received as I entered Bakerzin. Warmly welcome by the waiter, we felt very privilege as his spend his undivided attention explaining and introducing his the "must-try" and "commonly-tries" in its menu. His outstanding service is unique and the best I have encounter so far in a mall's restaurant. He should be given the best F&B service award. Unlike his colleagues, they were standing still by the side and not as heart warming as the waiter.

The All-Day-Set-Menu is an easy choice to choose for us as it narrow down the choices as it only offers a choice of appetizer, main course & beverages at S$17.90++.

Waldorf Salad (S$11.50) was my choice among the available appetizers:
a) Pumpkin soup ($6.90)
b) Spicy bloody mary soup ($6.90)
c) Garden salad ($9.90)

The indicative pricing on its set meal menu was rather misleading as the portion of the salad is rather small and pricing that was printed on its menu was actually referring to a bigger portion. Few crunchy walnuts in the mixture of leafy greens and apples in salad sauce, tastes refreshing.

Customers who ordered set meal are entitled to free flow of bread at its bread counter. This is the self help station where customer has to heat up the toaster and warm the french breads themselves.

I can't stop praising its service, when new breads came out of the kitchen, the waiter hurried to us and inform on its arrival. There were 6 types of breads available.

Fluffy and filled with air pockets. These cloud weight slices of bread were just taken out from the kitchen, spread some butter over it and enjoy them. Jam, vinegar and olive oil is also available.

We have chosen Ice lemon tea from the set and in additional ordered a Iced Lychee Tea at S$5.90. Served unsweetened and with additional cup of sweetener given by the side, customers can then adjust the sweetness at individual preference levels.

Beverage Choices:
a) Iced Lemon Tea
b) Coke
c) Sprite

The scene stealer, Carbonara was chosen to be our main course. It comes with creamy sauce coasted generously on the spaghetti, bits and small slices of bacon, thickened with eggs and cheese. Yums!

Choice of main course:
a) Aglio Olio ($10.90)
b) Arrabiata Penne ($13.50)
c) Ham & Bacon Penne ($14.50)
d) Mushroom Penne ($14.50)
e) Braised Pork Belly Rice ($15.50)
f) Teriyaki Chicken Rice ($14.60)
g) Chicken Curry with French Bread / Rice ($15.60)
h) Bakerz Chilli Dog ($15.20)

Baked sausages (S$11.50) was the additional small bites we had ordered. A recall of my recent business trip, I'm starting to miss German food. These Bratwurst sausages are served with sauteed potatoes and mushrooms. Mustard sauce was given on the side of the plate.

Service was good. The waiter had spontaneously walked over to our dinning table a few times throughout our dinner and introduced the environment and food Bakerzin offered. He added that sockets are available beside the ledge and free to use if we need to charge our iPads and devices.

For alacarte orders, standard chartered bank (SCB) Card Orders are given discounts if they spend S$30.00 and above. Love its service and I will definitely make a return!
