Carnivore Brazilian Churrascaria: Smile Jun 22, 2013

Ever since my friends come to knowledge that someone amidst their social network had started his own food blog, they all have been asking him or I should say me that very same question. "When are you free?"

Often a times, showing that same exact burning enthusiasm like I always find myself indulging sweet stuffs! Every once in a while in fact quite often, I will have one of those special privilege to luxuriate the whole dining experience with someone new.

This time though, I have a new partner joining me and my two other regular makan kakis to join us for the 1 for 1 lunch Brazilian feast buffet promotion offered by Carnivore Brazilian Churrascaria. To be honest, this was my first time getting a feel of authentic Brazilian cuisine. I have no idea of what to expect apart from the fact that it's gonna bring the carnivore side of me to my dinner plate!

I think many of us have a certain impression of how a buffet works. You know, the typical you get your first serving from all the different stations and when you're done, you walked around and grab your second helping so on and so for.

But over at Carnivore, they do it differently. Instead of you getting your food (apart from the veggies), your food comes to you! The meats are served by passadors or meat waiters walking around the restaurants. All armed with their trusty knifes. We were quite afraid of how they welded the knifes, mostly with one finger looped around the handle. I could imagine all the 1001 things that could go wrong should the knife dropped.

Did I mention to you that if you want more meat on your plate, all you need is to flip the chart to green and volia! Meat is serve! And flip to red if you wanna take a breather and enjoy the mounting food on your plate. Perhaps it's the crowd that they didn't expect from the lunch promotion. It just didn't matter if you flipped it or not because half the time, there ain't much meat left on those skewers by the time it reaches our table. Moral of the story: A good location is extremely vital in order to receive the most attention from the passadors!

Condiments are a must-have on every table since most of their meat arrived grilled but not heavily marinated so it might be a bit bland to those with a stronger taste buds. We didn't quite like the green Parsley Sauce maybe because of the colour but the brown sauce (can't remember the name) fared the best with all those smoky meat cuts! As for the brown bread crumbs, best stay clear of it. Pretty tasteless.

Fear. Says it all on our faces whenever the knife appeared. It wasn't that bad lah! We just kept our distance from the all the slicing that's all and I just happened to take this shot with my friend's priceless expression in it! The meat were succulent, tender and juicy. Particular the Beef Rump which stands above all! Do be prepared for a kidney failure when you had a bite of the Grilled Fish. They are seriously super salty. I suspect they used Cod though...

Our lunch fare didn't came cheap to be honest although there's a 1 for 1 lunch fare. At $62 for four diner which works out to be $15.50 per person sharing the 1 for 1 lunch buffet, I say the GST, service charge and the overpriced drinks were the true killers adding our bill to a hefty $108.28. Moral of the story: Just order ice water will do.

Service was fairly slow but given how they could still churn out skewers after skewers despite the full house scenario, I say it was a fair 3 hour deal.

Mention Canele and I can spend conversations after conversations relieving all those bitter happysweet memories I had licking chantilly cream off my fork, nipping colourful meringues and munching macarons the Parisian way! I wouldn't mind declaring Canele as my No. 1 favorite patisserie after all those wonderful dessert experiences!

It's as though you can't call yourself a dessert fanatic without ever paying them a visit, grabbing something sweet off the glass panels or something better, if you know what I mean...

I just love to sneak a glance every time I walked pass the elongated glass shelf housing a series of wonderful if not splendid and sweet things in life. That was until my sweet tooth got the upper hand and before I could even contemplate reality, I grabbed my cousin quite literally, one of those high tea converts ever since she got to have tea with me to accompany me for tea.

So when I got to know she missed lunch just to come out with me, I felt kinda bad and told her to get a main course courtesy of my wallet. She skimmed through the menu and decided on a nicely bowled Carbonara ($16.00) which came with strips of bacons, parmesan cheese and a huge poached egg sitting above. It was nice twirling strands of pastas but we thought it could have been worth the money if it was creamier.

There's a reason why Canele is called a patisserie and a chocolaterie. Although I can't remember the name of this dome shaped dessert, I sure remembered working my way through all those bittersweet dark chocolate casing only to be greeted by fruity, sort of like cherries hidden within. It was like eating a blackforest cake that's frozen. Pretty interesting that is only if I would remember it's name...

Parisians love their macarons and especially those of Ladurée and Pierre Hermé which is said to churn the finest macarons in Paris if not the best in the world. I didn't quite believe in the best until a friend of mine bought a tub from Pierre Hermé for me. Nothing needs to be said about Parisian macarons. They are just freaking darn good!

Sadly, I don't live in Paris so I just have to make do with somewhere renowned for their top notch quality macarons in Singapore. Rose and salted caramel are my all time favorites so what's yours?

I wonder if there's salted egg flavor, you know Singaporean style? Wonder how would it taste like...

One can never have enough for desserts. I gestured the cousin to grabbed another cake of her choice. She went out to the counter and make some tough decisions and before I could even hassle a guess what she got, a Strawberry Shortcake ($6.50) was served. "A block of strawberry delight!" I hummed at the back of my mind. Light and delightful was the whole experience, make sweeten with sugar crystals hidden at the foundation of the cake. That's one strawberry shortcake for you to know and for me to know it's the best!

Since it's a delight for two and we have no mood for coffee, she opted for Velvet Earl Grey while I regretted picking Chamomile Flowers as it created a whole lot of mess despite sifting the liquid. Tea is refillable over at Canele and so we end up sharing one pot of Earl Grey with two. Joy of sharing. Priceless.

If good things come to those who waits then surely, good things often comes at a price. Canele isn't your typical no-frill, no GST/Service charge, simple dessert patisseries like you find along Duxton. The desserts at Canele always come with class, with a certain elegant aura enjoying them and it's clear cut to robbed your money kind of patisserie but for the best strawberry shortcake in town and the even more perfect macarons (after Ladurée and Pierre Hermé), it's definitely worth swiping the card for that wonderful if not seemlessly flawless afternoon tea session...

You really have to appreciate consuming raw meat, the Japanese way.

For a fish to be suitable for sashimi and sushi, it has to be bled to ensure that the blood in the fish doesn't spoil the meat upon oxidation. Gutted to ensure that the parasites that are usually found in the guts doesn't migrate out and contaminate the whole fish. Afterwhich, the whole fish has to be thoroughly iced to retain the freshness. All these are happening right at the moment when the fish are caught.

See what I mean when you really gotta appreciate the people who prepare your food?

The variety of sushi they have is rather commendable. Bite size little treats but I was quite disappointed when I realised they didn't place wasabi within the sushi. That would be perfect and authentic sushi already but hey, no complains about their quality from me.

Sashmi comes in two forms; Sake and Maguro. Between the two, Sake was my preferred choice as was Mr T's as well. I find the maguro to be too thick which makes it laborious to savour and they are not exactly the top quality ones as well that I expected. Besides serving sake in its raw form, there's also different marinated ones. Yuzu was my favorite though smile Fresh and subtle.

Ever tried Corn or Matcha Tofu? Personally, the green matcha tofu on the was more to my liking than the corn one. The Fried Tofu was beautifully crafted and taste just as delectable as it looks but the ultimate winner of the four would have to be the chawanmushi.

I know a good Chawanmushi when I have one. A good cuppa would have a savoury sweetness taste right from the moment it touches the lips. A good cuppa would be delicate but just firm enough to scoop the goodness out without becoming all messed up.

In this case, they did it well!

Profiteroles are small little pastry balls filled with pastry cream. I love the feeling of the pastry cream exploding in your mouth when you compress the little brown puffs. The Matcha Creme Brulee was great too! The sugarish caramel was evenly balanced and there wasn't bits of crystals which would otherwise spoil the whole experience as I made my way into the soft green custard.

Swiss Rolls were delightfully sweet although they looked more like sandwiches than rolls if you asked me. Maybe they should change the name to Swiss Sandwiches instead! I think there's nothing much to describe about Panna Cotta. I was hesitant at first. I have never seen panna cotta in squareish forms before but in the end, I decided to give it a try and thank God I did...

Breakfast issues: Toast Box  OK Jun 20, 2013

An ideal breakfast should have eggs!

Deep Fry a loaf of toast and you get french toast. Spread a layer of peanut butter and you get well... Peanut butter french toast! The freshly fried toast sure warm up the peanut butter, creating a melty and gooey texture to each bite! It's amazing I tell you! What's even better is it's been cut into little bite size treat! All I need to do is to pop one inside my mouth, no cutting required!

There are many breakfast franchise spawning around Singapore. Ya Kun, Killiney Kopitiam and Toast Box. I don't really care which is the best so as long as they give me my breakfast! But the main problem about these franchise is that it's often packed which means you can literally eavesdrop next table conversations!

I guess it's that rustic feel that you get that makes me back for more!

As I am writing this post, I have this sudden craving for toast, eggs and coffee! Heh! I am such a glutton!

What can I say? I'm a lazy guy who goes for lazy breakfast!

Chocolate Origin Smile Jun 20, 2013

A 6 inch Chocolate Fudge Cake ($29) from Chocolate Origin! Look at that glossy, thick and sexy Chocolate Ganache that surrounds the cake... I found myself in pure bliss! Chocolate Origin's rendition of fudge cake has an unusually thicker layer of fudge compared to others. To some, this is what they define chocolate fudge cakes. But to me... I call it a Chocolate Fudge Dream come true!
