Nice Sushi  Smile Apr 30, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi

This outlet at ION is popular, everytime long queue, and usually have to queue earlier. But the wait is worth it, as the food is good.

I like their Aji (mackerel), their roasted fatty salmon (at the counter), their scallops (the normal-sized one), the eel, the Hirame (flounder) and the Tamago (egg). Go for the fresh sashimi of the season, you won't regret it.

I'm disappointed with their Hamachi, and Ikura though I usually love yellow tail and salmon eggs, but somehow theirs don't fit my taste. Avoid the cooked dishes, stick with the sushis. And generally avoid the cheap promotions, they are cheap for a reason...

Must Try Yong Tau Foo Smile Mar 27, 2013
Categories : Singaporean | Coffeeshop | Noodles | Kids-Friendly

Simpang Niang Tofu ($4/pax) is actually cooked in the Gong Bao Style but turns out to be not spicy at all. The gravy is darker, slightly sweeter and more fragrant since it has been infused with dried chilli.
Another difference is that all the ingredients have been deep- fried, so you can't miss that crunchy chewy bite in each nugget of either wonton/fish ball/stuffed green pepper etc....The pieces are made smaller than the usual size and cut into half, and thus more convenient for diners. Their Kang Kong relied on a lot of hae bee but still leaned more towards the sweet side and lacked the spicy kick.

Assam Fish Head $22 is huge. The fish head was submerged in a sea of red orange gravy that is thicker, slightly sweeter than the usual ones. The tartness of tomatoes which complements the Assam flavor makes this an appetizing dish. However, the fish was not very fresh.

Of Rice Burgers and Corn Soup OK Feb 23, 2013

We always love the ambience of MOS burgers. The outlets emit a zen like feel and the junction 8 outlet is pretty spacious with our fave side long seats that offers quite a bit of privacy for conversations. Foodwise, our must haves include the MOS nuggets and a hot creamy corn soup. Service was rather slow even though it was not dinner time. I was in the queue for a good 15minutes. As they operate on ‘prepare upon request’ system, the food always arrived hot so it is worth a little wait, but it is usually quite hard for find a table during peak hours

Nice grill OK Feb 23, 2013

I've been to several Aston outlets including the one near chomp chomp, amk and the cathay cineplex. From my experience, i would say the Ang Mo Kio branch is, by far, the best outlet. Firstly, the food quality is consistent with the other outlets. Secondly, as with the other Aston outlets with no air conditioning, it's cheaper than the one at the Cathay. Thirdly, and most importantly, the coffeeshop that house Astons has got so many seats that you can easily grab a table and order your food quickly.

Teochew Porridge in the wee hours Smile Jan 16, 2013

Categories : Taiwanese | Porridge/Congee

I went there with my wife and son one and week ago after a midnight movie. Oasis has been around since 1980s when they were still in Kallang.

We reached there at 3.30 pm. The restaurant was quite empty and the restaurant staff were really efficient and we were led to a table immediately.

We ordered the following:

Lu Rou (Braised Pork)

Cai Poh Ommelette

Tou Fu with pork floss

Minced meat with salted egg

The food was excellent. Every dish was cooked well.

I especially liked the braised pork and it is our favourite dish of the four. The cai poh ommelette was well cooked too.

In terms of service, this restaurant was excellent. The food came within 5 minutes of ordering. They give a bucket of porridge which they then leave it next to your table on a trolley. There were big chunks of sweet potatoes in the porridge and it's really not advisable to gorge down on the sweet potatoes unless you don't want to finish the dishes you ordered.

The cai poh ommelette was well cooked too. Although it was a little bit burnt, as well as just a wee bit too salty, I can't really complain as it is one of the best cai poh ommelettes that I have tasted.

The waitresses were always really quick to refill our tea cups.

Total bill came up to about $40 for 3 persons. It is quite expensive but the food and the hours they are opened for business kind of makes up for it.

I especially liked the environment and feel that it is a really good place to unwind.

I will definitely visit this restaurant again.
