Awesome chicken rice sauce Smile Jun 12, 2013

Categories : Singaporean Chinese

Sweet, sweet, chicken rice. The sauce is the magic in this hard to pronounce restaurant. LEE FUN NAM KEE (combination of founder's and his wife's surnames). Now don't forget that because this is where you will experience the sweetest chicken rice sauce ever.

The brown sauce that comes with the soya sauce chicken is thick and starchy and so flavourful. You can mix the chicken with the chicken rice and you're set, your meal is complete. If you're not easily satisfied, there are the standard veggies that you can order as a side, the veggies - Kai Lan, comes with sinful pieces of pork lard. YUMMEH.

The price of the dishes are higher than your usual chicken rice in the kopitiam but this is a semi-restaurant leh, so the price is not that bad la. The restaurant is always crowded on meal times, both weekdays and weekends. Do make your bookings beforehand.

My all time favourite hawker food is Oyster Omelette. And the best oyster omelette you can find in Singapore is located here at Toa Payoh Lorong 7.

In my book, there is no other oyster omelette in Singapore that even comes remotely close to it.

Manned by the friendly husband and wife owners, they make oyster omelette perfection. Firstly, it is not oily despite the crispy bits of starch and egg. The worst kind of oyster omelette is the soggy and starchy kind. No problems with that here. The balance between crispy and starch is just nice. The starchy bits are chewy without being gooey. They also use a generous amount of eggs to give the omelette a very good texture. The chilli is also just right, not too spicy with just enough sourness to cut through the oil.

But the créme de la résistance of course is the oysters. They top the omelette with a generous helping of big, fresh and juicy oysters that just makes the dish perfect.

They are closed on Tuesday and opened from 3-9pm daily although they are normally sold out by 8pm. My personal guarantee that once you try it, you wont want to eat oyster omelette elsewhere.

Walked past this open-air Coffeeshop restaurant a couple of times and decided to dine here with the family on tow.

We ordered:

1) Lamb Shank - I judge by whether the meat has funny smell and the texture of meat. It's beautifully grilled and tender to chew. Only pity there's not enough for me!! They plate 4 pieces on a home-made potato crust and seasonal vegetables. The vegetables were well marinated and sauté too. The potato crust thingie is a little weird for me. No like. But as a whole-SUPER LIKE!

2) Tenderloin - hubby loves meat so he order one steak with pepper sauce. Meat is generally tender so that's great. I asked him to compare to Aston's and he said that Aston's serving seemed to be bigger, taste-wise, about the same.

3) Grilled Chicken and fillet combo - I found the fish fresh and generous in serving. Chicken was ok too. Nothing spectacular but no bad.

We only order one set so we had corn and potato soup to start. The soup was home-made and has bits of corn and potato in it. Very nice. Dessert was bread pudding and it was quite good too!!! As we stay in TP, very likely we'll pop by every now and then to try their other dishes.

Chicken Rice Ball OK May 31, 2013

Categories : Hainanese | Coffeeshop | Chicken Rice

Chicken rice balls are more commonly found in Melaka. This is a very popular stall in Toa Payoh is one of the few places that you can still where you can still find chicken rice balls in Singapore. Apparently, I have been told that serving the rice in such a compact form helps to retain the flavors. Unlike the 'ping pong' size ones you find in Melaka, the ones here are like erm.. 'tennis ball' size. Usually, 2 chicken rice balls are sufficient for me to fill my tummy. If you prefer the regular chicken rice, they serve it here too. Other the fragrant and flavorful rice, I love the chicken feet peanut soup that compliments the meal.

Especially on weekends, do expect rather long lunch time queue at this place.

KFC community project OK May 31, 2013

You might think there's nothing to review about KFC but this is no ordinary KFC outlet. This outlet works hand in hand with the Singapore Association for the Deaf to provide job opportunities for the hearing impaired and also raise funds towards the association's tuition and enrichment programme for deaf students.

The outlet states that it has a limited menu, but the many times I've visited I've not noticed anything missing. Maybe it's just the latest promotions that are not available?

Most times the hearing impaired staff will helm the counters. All you need to do is point to your order on the piece of menu in front, and there will be options listed (e.g. crispy or original) that you can also point to. In any case of miscommunication, the manager is always nearby to assist. There's also a TV in-store, constantly looping the information about the outlet.
