The coffee shop was rather empty when i went for lunch on Saturday.

Most of the stalls in the coffee shop have closed down and some have been replaced. This is one of the replacement stalls right there. I left with 3 stalls to choose from and i decided to go with this stall.

This stall offers Kway Chap, Pig's Organ Soup, Kway Chap, Steamed Meat with Salted Fish, Preserved Vegetable with Pork Belly etc. I wanted something different so i went for the Preserved Vegetable with Pork Belly that came with a bowl of rice for $3.00.

I waited at the table and it served right after.

A good portion of preserved vegetable served with few slices of pork belly in a bowl. It came with red cut chilli in soya sauce but i felt the chilli for Kway Chap would be a better choice.

The pork belly was boiled separately and not braised with the preserved vegetable so the flavor was lacking. And, the texture did not taste as desirable as it was tougher than expected. The taste of preserved vegetable was equally disappointing. I guess it has not been cooked long enough to the expected softness and to release its flavor, too.

I am not likely to come back for more.

Popiah. Cry Aug 24, 2013

I wanted something extra right after dinner and thought to give the popiah from this stall a try. The stall was manned by a rather cheerful Auntie solely. There was another customer right before me so i waited.

Fried tau kwa and rojak as well as different flavors of custard beancurd are available too.
Popiah - $1.40.

Popiah - $1.40.

I ordered a piece of popiah for $1.40. This stall is famous for their handmade popiah skin so i expected a certain standard of their popiah. I paid the Auntie in coins then waited for her to make the popiah for me.

The popiah was ready in minutes. The Auntie did not ask whether i would like to have it with chilli so she just go with the default choice and that is the chilli option. I took a bite out of one of the slices. The turnip filling has got a strange sourish taste which i could not quite associate with. It was about 8.00 pm then so could it be the turnip filling has been left a bit too long? I doubt the sourish taste was from the seasoning though. I really did not like it. I decided to left it unfinished. The filling was mainly the turnip with bits of carrot and beansprouts.

The skin of the popiah has got a nice elasticity that give it a likable chewiness but a bit too soft.

I might be keen to try the rest but will definitely give the popiah a miss.

Wanton Noodle.  Cry Aug 12, 2013

I wanted a quick lunch before proceed to Hong Lim Park for a National Day Celebration. I decided to have the wanton noodle for $3 from this stall for the first time.
Wanton Noodle at $3.

Wanton Noodle at $3.

I was the only customer then and so i gotten my order almost immediately. First impression was that the color of those char siew seemed to be too artificially red. A good portion of noodle was served with a few slices of those super red char siew and a leaf of cabbage. A bowl of soup with 3 pieces of wantons in it was served along too.

I tossed the noodle well but it still looked boringly plain. I had the first mouthful and i really did not like it. It tasted too bland with no distinctive taste.  It seemed the sauce mix was simply the soya sauce.

Those slices of red char siew tasted rather dry and tough too. The taste was rather out as well.

Thankfully as these wantons tasted decent. I could taste the well-seasoned filling of the wanton well.

This should be the only experience as i could easily get better wanton noodle for the same amount of money.

Curry Puff. Cry Aug 09, 2013

Wanted something extra after a not so filling lunch. Spotted this Nonya Kueh stall right at the corner and decided to get the something there.
Curry Puff for 0.50 cents.

Curry Puff for 0.50 cents.

There were a good selection of Nonya kueh available but i was not in the mood for those so i got a curry puff instead. Such a curry puff is at 0.50 cents. I initially thought it is priced rather reasonably as the puff is quite a plump one.
Hollow inside.

Hollow inside.

First bite. I was surprised to find the hollowness in it with just small bits of curry potatoes. The crust was a bit too thick and rather tasteless to my liking. The potato filling tasted alright with zero level of spiciness but with a slight curry taste.

The curry puff was not freshly made and so my expectation is low but still i did not like it.

I might try others but will definitely skip the curry puff from this stall.

Pineapple Fried Rice. Cry Jul 26, 2013

Pineapple Fried Rice.

Pineapple Fried Rice.

I was there to take away a packet of fried pineapple rice for $4.50. I was one of their few customers during the busy lunch hour. I waited for less than 10 minutes to collect my order.

I was surprised to see the assistant using his bare hand to grab the pineapple bits from a container that he took it out from the fridge. Is it appropriate for this assistant to handle the ingredients with a bare hand?

It was a little disturbing to me.

The main cook and his female assistant are rather friendly though.

The taste of the Pineapple Fried Rice was rather average. The main ingredients were bits of pineapple, the over-fried chinese sausage and the low quality pork floss that packed separately. I was not sure whether there is any egg in it as i could hardly taste any. The overall taste was not distinctive. It is not quite worth the $4.50 paid.

Am i expecting too much?

It was a disappointing lunch.
