This is another new stall in this food centre. I was greeted with a warm smile by the friendly Auntie of this stall. We chatted for a bit. She told me proudly that her stall is the only stall in this food centre that still insisting to handmade every piece of the traditional snacks to give the best possible taste to her customers.

She pointed to the dough set on the table. Then she pointed at a mixer next to it, said, 'You need this machine to do it.' She then told me that she has got a regular customer that come by nearly every morning to buy her snacks. I could tell that she is passionate in what she is doing.

I wanted a piece of red bean salted bun and a piece of butterfly bun to go. Both are for 0.70 cents each. If you wanted more then 3 pieces are for only $2.00.

I started with the red bean salted bun first. I actually enjoyed the taste of it. The skin layer was quite thin but it has been fried well without getting overly greasy. The generous bit of sesame seeds enhanced its taste quite a bit.

The good amount of red bean paste was of the right level of sweetness and complemented it well.

The butterfly bun did not fare as well though. It might have been left for a bit too long as it tasted slightly harder but it did not compromise its taste though. It is still enjoyable if go with a cup of good coffee for breakfast or just for snack.

I am interested to try their You Tiao if i come by this food centre again. I guess it must be good since their signboard emphasized on it.

Hainanese Curry Rice. Smile Nov 21, 2013
Categories : Hainanese | Chinese | Hawker Centre | Rice

The turnover of stalls in this food centre seemed to be rather high in just 2 months since my last visit. And, this particular stall is one of the newest stalls in this food centre. This stall reminded me of another stall in Ang Mo Kio and might be a possible relationship between them.

There are 4 sets available for selection, namely Curry Chicken Set ($2.80), Pork Chop Set ($3.00), Braised Meat Set ($3.00) and Fried Prawn Set ($3.50).

I decided to go with Pork Chop Set. It came with a generous portion of braised cabbage, a fried egg and slices of pork chop. It was served with a good amount of curry sauce over the rice.

The pork chop is the undeniable star of this plate of rice. The pork chop was of the right thickness and nicely seasoned before coated with a thin layer of flour and deep-fried to give it the desired crispiness. It tasted nice when eaten with the aromatic curry sauce.

Though the cabbage was nicely braised to give it the delightful softness but the taste was rather light. It tasted better when go with the curry sauce too. The fried egg was overdone so not to my liking.

A pretty economical choice for lunch in this food centre and that explained the queue when i was there.

Gyoza Set Meals. Smile Nov 19, 2013
Categories : Japanese

The newest outlet by Keisuke Tokyo located at the corner of Orchid Hotel, a stone's throw from one of their other outlets.

This is a 18-seaters all-gyoza restaurant offers 3 different kinds of pan-fried dumplings to match with various side dishes, soup and rice as a set meal.

How to order:

STEP 1: Choose your Gyoza (5 pieces).

There are 3 different sets for selection:
Tonkotsu King Gyoza (Pork): Fine minced pork mixed with rich & thick tonkotsu broth to give it the excellent taste.
Tori King Gyoza (Chicken): Minced chicken mixed with rich chicken broth to nice and juicy feel.
Keisuke King Gyoza (Prawn): Minced prawn and pork mixed with strong flavor of crab stock to provide the excellent springy palatability.

STEP 2: Choose 2 side dishes

1. Chicken Nanban with Tartar Sauce.
2. Stir-fried Egg with Chinese Chives.
3. Stir-fried Pork and Cabbage with Miso.
4. Deep-fried Tofu with Minced Pork Gravy.
5. Deep-fried Chicken with Spicy Sauce and Mixed Sesame.
6. Stir-fried Egg with Tomatoes.
7. Stir-fried Eggplant (Brinjal) with Miso.
8. Deep-fried Potato with Minced Pork Gravy.

STEP 3: Choose the size of Koshihikari Rice and soup (Miso / Vegetable)

. Rice. Small, regualr, large and extra large at the same price.
. Soup. Vegetable and Miso.
. Marinated bean sprouts and cabbage pickles are available on the table for free.

Gyoza set is priced at $13.90 and a-la-carte order is $8.00 per set.

While queuing up, i completed the order chits. We selected the Tonkotsu King Gyoza (Pork) and Keisuke King Gyoza (Prawn). We opted for Chicken Nanban with Tartar Sauce, Stir-fried Pork and Cabbage with Miso, Deep-fried Chicken with Spicy Sauce & Mixed Sesame and Deep-fried Potato with Minced Pork Gravy. The size of rice is Regular and Large respectively and Miso Soup for both set.

Glasses of plain water were served immediately upon seated down and followed by Rice and Miso Soup.

The Koshihikari Rice served is the Japanese short-grain rice. Its texture has got a slight stickiness coupled with a desired softness. It tasted particularly good when using the Japanese Dry Seasoning available on the table to sprinkle over it.

The main ingredients of the Miso Soup were tofu and wakame. The wakame has got a likable sweet flavor with a slippery texture that complemented the smoothness of tofu. It tasted slightly salty with a distinctive miso taste.

The Gyoza served next. Both sets came at the same time. The lightly flavored filling was wrapped in a thinly rolled piece of wrapper. It was nicely pan-fried on one side to give a slight crispiness leaving the upper part with a steamed texture.

Tonkotsu King Gyoza (Pork). The lightly seasoned minced pork and the richness of thick tonkotsu broth was a pleasant combination.

It tasted good though not outstanding.

Keisuke King Gyoza (Prawn). The sweetness of the prawn complemented the light flavor of the minced meat and the intense flavor of the crab broth was a delightful surprise. This is a much prefer choice to the Tonkotsu King Gyoza.

All the dishes were prepared upon order and right in front of us in the open kitchen.

Chicken Nanban with Tartar Sauce. The chicken came in 2 pieces. It was nicely deep fried to give it the delightful crispiness and still succulent in texture. The Sauce tasted more like the Japanese Mayonnaise and not quite like the Tartar Sauce stated.

Stir-fried Pork and Cabbage with Miso. Slices of thinly sliced pork belly were stir-fried with cabbage as well as red and green pepper. It was a tasty dish though not too special.

Deep-fried Chicken with Spicy Sauce & Mixed Sesame. This is the nicest amongst all the side dishes. The 2 pieces of deep-fried chicken were mixed with Spicy Sauce then garnished with sesame. The Spicy Sauce did not taste too spicy and the taste was further enhanced by the bits of sesame seeds.

Deep-fried Potato with Minced Pork Gravy. The deep-fried potato pieces were then served with the Minced Pork Gravy. The taste of minced pork gravy was rather appetizing.

The service was friendly and attentive. We were greeted upon enter and leaving. It was an enjoyable lunch.

Bibimbap at Food Centre. Smile Nov 18, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Korean | Hawker Centre

There was a queue of few people right in front of this stall when i was there for lunch. I stood there looking at their menu board and seemingly indecisive. Then, it happened when was one of their customers right in front walked past with the nicely presented bibimbap placed on her tray. At that moment, i wanted to try it too for just $5.

Bibimbap is a signature Korean mixed rice. It is served as a bowl of warm rice topped with namul consisting seasoned vegetables and gochujang (chili pepper paste). A raw or fried egg and sliced meat are common additions. The ingredients are stirred together thoroughly just before eating.

The one is a simplified version of bibimbap. The rice was served in a sizzling stone pot topped with handfuls of bean sprouts, carrot, shredded lettuce, seaweed, raw egg and thin slices of beef. I was asked whether i want it with chilli when it was placed on my tray.

It was served with a saucer consisting few pieces of ikan belis and kimchi.

A bowl of seaweed soup came along too.

Pictures were taken quickly then i started mixing it well excitedly. This was my first time having a bibimbap and i did not know what to expect of its taste. Seemingly, the first mouthful was a pleasant one.

Though a large amount of chilli pepper paste added but i could not taste much of its spiciness. I would think the overall taste was not quite distinguished. The crunchiness derived from the vegetables added was delighted though.

It was generally a pleasant experience as there is no prior experience in comparison. I would think it is worth trying for fan of Korean Cuisine given the reasonable prices of most items on their menu board.

Why the long queue? OK Nov 18, 2013
Categories : Hainanese | Hawker Centre | Chicken Rice

I was rather amazed when i came across the long queue right in front of this stall. I have never really heard of this stall so this is definitely not amongst one of those famous stalls. Then, what gotten these people willingly queuing up for? Possible reasons are their foods must be good and the prices must be cheap. I could not think of the third reason to justify such a queue. This queue right there is easily the longest in this food centre.

The realistic way to find out is to join the queue and try it out. I waited for a good 20 minutes to order and waited for another few minutes to get it. I decided to have the roasted meat and char siew rice for $3.00. I would think $3.00 is considered rather cheap for such a plate of rice. A good portion of braised sauce covered rice was served on a plate with dividers. Substantial portion of roasted meat served along with equally good portion of char siew together with a bowl of cabbage soup.

I tried the char siew first. It tasted good though not outstanding nor memorable. It was nicely caramelised to give it a slight sweetness without compromising the taste and its texture.

The roasted meat tasted just fine. It has got a good balance of lean and fat proportion to give it the desired texture. It was nicely roasted to give its skin a rather slight crispiness coupled with a distinctive saltiness and desired tenderness within.

The soup served with cabbage in the soup. It has got the sweetness and intense flavor derived from the cabbage.

I would think the char siew tasted a little better in comparison but still not quite worth the queue though as there is another stall serving comparably or better roasted meats in the same food centre.
