Good Peranakan food though pricey Smile Apr 18, 2013

Categories : Malaysian | Peranakan / Nonya

Coming from a Peranakan family, as and when we go to a Peranakan restaurant, you can be sure that whenever my family heads out to have Peranakan food at any eatery, the food will be scrutinised and compared to what we have at home. Of course home-cooked meals are the best, but the fare t Pera-Makan comes pretty close! We ordered the Ayam Buah Keluak, Itek Siow, Chap Chye, Ayam Kepiting, Hee piow soup. Pricey but good.

This is one unique restaurant which has it's own microbrewery which looked pretty impressive. Had an executive lunch here and guess how much it cost? $33! I suppose that's just a promotion but it's a really good one since we were entitled to the appetiser buffet spread which had different varieties of salads, cold cuts and pasta. But careful not to eat too much the portion of their mains are pretty big. I had the fish and chips and was astonished at it's size. The batter could have been more flavourful but it was generally alright. Perhaps next time I shall ask if one can just have the appetiser buffet since it was really good. The view from the restaurant is good as it overlooks the entire Marina Bay Promenade.

My favourite Garlic Prawn Pasta! Smile Apr 15, 2013

Categories : American

Here's where one of the best aglio olio pastas are, the one and only Garlic Prawn Pasta. I've tried this dish at other Coffee Club outlets but always come back to the Siglap one as the standard is consistent and not too oily. I love the Iced Mocha Vanilla as well; with a mixture of coffee, chocolate and vanilla ice cream, what's not to love? If you're looking for something less sweet, try the Iced Earl Vanilla which is basically iced earl grey tea with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Among all others available, the ultimate dessert has to be the Muddy Mudpie, which has been getting rave reviews for years. Chocolate and coffee ice cream on an oreo base, drizzled generously with chocolate sauce, it's a dessert that will keep your spoons going at it till there's none left. With it's size, it's definitely for sharing.

My hubby and I tout the XXL Crispy Chicken as the ultimate satisfying snack to have when you’re hungry but it’s not meal time. The chicken cutlet is coated in a light batter that is crispy and seasoned well while the chicken itself is moist and tender. Caution: However tempting it is to bite into a piece as soon as you get it, it is really hot since it usually comes just fried. We have suffered many occasions of burnt tongues due to our eagerness. You have been warned.

I have to commend on Delifrance’s Baguettes; the crust is crispy yet not too hard, while the insides remain soft. This standard has remained consistent through the years and I’m glad for it! Their pastries using puff pastry are my favourite especially the ones baked with cheese and if you want something light yet filling for a meal, try their stuffed Croissants like the Chicken ham and cheese Croissant, Tuna Mayo or Egg Mayo ones!
