Affordable French Dinner Smile Dec 09, 2014

Categories : French | Restaurant | Seafood | Steaks and Grills | Burgers and Sandwiches

Been wanting to eat at Saveur for a long time already, but every time I see people queue-ing outside the restaurant, it always turns me down. Today, the restaurant door was unusually closed, and it didn't look that crowded, so my friend and I decided to have our dinner there. As we opened the door and went in, I saw a machine to dispense the queue number (no reservation allowed at the Far East branch btw), and here I was thinking it would take so long. Moreover, there were some people on the waiting list already. But then the staff straight away led us to sit. Lucky us, first visit without waiting time hehe.

The place is not really spacious (the seats are really close to one another) and it's too crowded inside. The ambience actually looks nice with the chandeliers and elegant black color, but due to the noisiness, I guess it's not a suitable place for romantic dining. Talking about the menu, there were not many options to choose from, but the price is very attractive. French food is usually identical with high price, but thanks to Saveur, they have made it affordable.

Each of us ordered one dish from the main course selections and a glass of iced water. The staff kindly reminded us that warm/iced water is chargeable at 30cents. Our food came quite quickly, took less than 15 minutes...

Duck Confit - $12.90
duck confit served with mashed potato, sauteed shitake with parsley, orange segments and orange-infused natural jus
It must be one of the restaurant's best-seller dishes, since I saw every table ordering it. It kinda reminded me of Indonesian 'bebek goreng' (fried duck) haha. The duck was nicely fried, the outer skin was crispy and it was such a tender kind of meat. However, it was a bit too salty for my liking. The mashed potato was a perfection. It was so creamy and tasted differently from others I've tried before (different in a good way of course), and it blended nicely with the orange jus. The sauteed shitake mushroom was so-so though.

Chicken Rolade - $9.90
chicken thigh stuffed with foie-gras infused chicken farce, creamy basmati rice and parmesan sauce
It was my friend's order. Upon seeing the word 'foie gras', I was a bit doubtful to try it. She ensured me to try. I detected a bit of weird taste (maybe it was the thing?), but overall, it's not something that would make me refuse to give a second try. The rice was creamy and went well with the cheesy sauce.

Overall, it was a good experience trying French cuisine. I was delighted with the service as well, that's why I didn't mind paying 10% service charge. The service was prompt and friendly, the staffs always put a smile on their faces even though it was a busy evening. Definitely will come back!

K-Pop Buffet Smile Dec 01, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Korean | Restaurant | Buffet | Korean BBQ

It was a Sunday, and bf suddenly craved for Korean BBQ. There are so many restaurants serving Korean BBQ, be it buffet or ala carte. Thanks to Google and recommendations from local food bloggers, we finally decided to eat at K.Cook Korean BBQ Buffet at Orchard Central.

Perched on the 7th floor of Orchard Central, this restaurant has indoor and outdoor area. If you choose to eat at outdoor, you can enjoy a great view of Orchard Road and its vicinity. As a K-Pop lover, I really like this place because they play K-Pop songs the whole time haha. There is also a big screen showing Korean variety shows, concert, or MV, but unfortunately it was off during our visit. There is a kind of queue machine, which will tell you whether there is still available seat. If there isn't any, you can leave your phone number, get your queue number, and they will call you once there is a vacant seat for you (keep your eye on your phone haha).

Included in the buffet are free-flow BBQ ingredients, cooked food, canned drink, rice, and fruits. The BBQ ingredients themselves are rich in variety. There are beef bulgogi, beef rib eye, pork belly, pork collar, spicy chicken, squids, prawns (just to name a few), all of which are marinated nicely. From the cooked food section, there are japchae (Korean glass noodle), pajeon (Korean pancake), and tteokbokki (Korean rice cake).

Instead of using charcoal grill, K.Cook uses non-sticky flat pan, so don't worry about the meat being charred quickly. The wide size of the pan allows us to put and grill many slices of meat at a time.

More kinds of meat being grilled

Fruit cocktails for the dessert

The service turned out to be good as well. The staffs were friendly and prompt, they immediately cleared our empty plates. Overall, I highly recommend this place for all Korean BBQ lovers. From as low as $14.90++, you can enjoy the scrumptious Korean BBQ buffet with a great ambience. Oh ya, there is 10% discount if you finish within an hour or below.

Buffet Price :
Lunch : Mon - Fri (11.30am - 3pm) / Sat, Sun, PH & PH eve (11.30am - 5pm)
Adult : $14.90++ / $24.90++
Child (4-12 years old) : $8.90++ / $18.90++
Dinner : Mon - Thu (5.30pm - 10pm) / Fri, Sat, Sun, PH & PH eve (5pm - 10pm)
Adult : $24.90++ / $26.90++
Child (4-12 years old) : $18.90++ (both)

Craving Satisfied Smile Nov 29, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Vietnamese

Feeling hungry after church, bf and I wanted to have lunch at around City Hall area. Since I was craving for Vietnamese food, we headed to NamNam Noodle Bar. Thankfully, the long queue I used to see before was nowhere to be seen. There was only a lady in front of us, and not long after we could proceed to our seat already.

Mineral Water
Specially-designed small bottled water. Nothing special tho.

Fruit Cocktail - $4.90
fruit cocktail, pineapple, jackfruit, lychee, and crushed ice
The fruit-lover bf ordered this and regretted. It tasted very weird, he said. Even upon its arrival, I got no intention to try haha.

Pho Beef Steak Slices - $8.90
A visit to Vietnamese eatery won't be complete without a bowl of pho (Vietnamese noodle soup). At NamNam, you can have it with either rice noodle or instant noodle. I chose rice noodle, since I was thinking what's the point of having it with instant noodle (I was just too bored with instant noodle hais). The beef steak slices were served medium rare. The rice noodle was so smooth, and the broth was flavorful with herbs aromatic smell, as a result from 24 hours of boiling. Above all, the beef was the bomb! It was very tender, juicy, and generously given. Definitely worth the price.

Dry Sauteed Lemongrass Pork Noodle - $9.90
dry rice vermicelli with pork fillets, spring roll, shrimp paste, beansprouts, chopped herbs, and peanuts
This was bf's order. I didn't try it because it looked unappetizing haha. It made him regret for the second time. He complained it was so dry, too much taoge and tasted so weird. At the end, he didn't finish the dish, only ate the noodle lol.

The price here is nett and there is no service charge (yeah!). Thus, you need to fill in the order form and bring to the cashier for payment. Then, just wait for your food to be served. Overall, I enjoyed my lunch here (not for bf certainly, haha). My only gripe is probably regarding of the place. It was so squeezy that the space from one table to another was probably just a span of hand. Nevertheless, the service was okay and food was served shortly.

Monday Perk-Me-Up Smile Nov 29, 2014

Categories : Café | Brunch

So today is my lecture recess. However, I still needed to go to campus for assignment submission, and I got a group meeting at 3pm. After submission, I tried to find a place outside campus to chill out while doing another school project, since I was lazy to go home and then go to campus again. After browsing for recommendations on internet, I decided to go to One Man Coffee.

Located on the same main road as my campus, which is Upper Thomson Road, this coffee shop is really accessible. I just needed to take any bus (except 169) from my campus bus stop and after a few stops I arrived already (less than 10 minutes ride). Chance is high that you may miss this coffee shop, since the name sign is not really obvious. I have been walking past it several times yet I never noticed its existence. Btw, One Man Coffee shares the same building space with Crust Gourmet Pizza Bar, so if Crust's sign looks more obvious to you, just go in.

Matcha Latte - $5
Was not in the mood with cold stuff, I chose hot Matcha Latte to accompany my study. The surface was really frothy, and the taste was a bit too sweet for my liking.

I expected them to do a latte art though sad

French Toast Brioche - $10
with homemade berry compote, candied walnuts, and fresh cream
They serve brunch as well! Heard so much rave about their French toast, so I ordered one. The brioche was so impressive! It was fluffy and buttery, blended nicely with crunchy walnuts. Nothing special with that dollop of fresh cream. The berry compote was super sour, but after a few spoonfuls I started to find it addictive.

Overall, One Man Coffee is one decent place to perk you up. Nett price, no service charge, and free wi-fi, are some plus points to consider. I will definitely come back for that uber good French toast!

Decent Meal Smile Sep 21, 2014

Categories : Food Court

My friends and I had lunch at Foodfare after exam. I decided to buy food from the braised duck stall, since I was bored with the other stalls. I opted for their braised duck rice. At the price of only $3.80, I got a plate of rice, braised duck,  beancurd, half egg, and a bowl of soup. The portion was quite big and it was fufilling. The duck was a bit boney, but the amount of duck meat given was generous. I like the gravy, it was thick and tasty. Overall, I was satisfied with my lunch.
