The concept of serving seafood in a bag with the main idea of eating using bare hands to get the best taste out of it has been a rising trend right here. Full of crab has been around in this community for just slightly longer than 1 year.
So basically this is how the ordering goes. First you’ll choose your catch – snow crab legs, crayfish, sri lankan crabs etc or you can pick the combo for sharing. For instance a Captain Cook’s Combo contains sri lankan crabs, prawns and choice of corn cob or baby potatoes. All prices were rather reasonable as they are priced accordingly to the market rates. Once you’re done with the main ingredients, you choose the preferred flavor and its spice level – cajun, fully loaded or garlic butter and mild, medium or hot respectively. You can add on other seafood that you like to the combo, such as boston lobster, clams etc.

Full of crab called these as fish sticks, and they are served complimentary for you to munch on before your bags are served. It may just look like those shredded dried fish snacks that are easily available in NTUC, but do not belittle this simple snack. They have been toasted/fried and somewhat tasted like crackers, crunchy and highly addictive.

Here comes the main character! Captain’s combo with fully loaded sauce at a medium spicy level. The price range for Captain’s Combo is usually at the $100 odds. Once the bag is opened, the aroma is so so good! The taste is pretty good but weren’t well infused into the seafood itself. The sauce is a little too salty and oily on its own, its better to go with the potatoes, seafood or some bread sticks. It’s kind of mixed feeling towards the seafood. Crab roe to me is the best part! But the way it is cooked make it super hard and tasteless. It was such a waste. Even for the prawns itself, it’s kind of hard to chew on too, it lacks the sweetness and crunchy mouth feel. It seems like it’s overcooked or the method of cooking does not seem right at all. But luckily, the crab meat is still awesome! Sweet and fresh! I believe because it was protected by the thick crab shell, so it was not over expose to heat for a long time that results in all the toughness of meat.

We decided to add on a boston lobster to our combo at an additional price of $40. Similarly to our combo, as the lobster is cut into half, unlike what you expect of a sweet and crunchy meat, it turn out to be hard and chewy. Another disappointment despite the good flavor and aroma.

Being a little unsatisfied from our meal, we decided to add on a 6pcs cajun wings ($10). Wings are served piping hot and are well marinated with mixtures of herbs and spices with some sorts of flakes. Very crispy and juicy. Way better than the tough seafood! Never regret ordering these wings. It’s highly recommended!

The plus point of Full of Crabs is that seafood used are really big and meaty but the downside is that, seafood being subject to heat for too long a time results in the toughness in meat, losing it’s sweetness and juiciness which i find it a pity. But overall, they have good service and flavor of food.

Another new addition to the Singapore cafe scene. 3 months old Flavour Flings tucked away in a corner under the block of flats in Hougang focuses on breakfast and brunch. The owners have definitely paid detailed attention to the overall decorations of the cafe. Behind the main door, pebbles and wooden planks are laid on the floor leading straight to the ordering counter, a very refreshing concept that set it apart from all the current cafes.

Although the cafe looks spacious, but seating area is kind of small and closely packed with wooden tables and chairs used as the furniture. Walls are ingeniously utilized with hand drawn coffee menu and art works from the owners themselves.
We decided to order the following coffee and mains for trying.

Hot Mocha ($6)

Nacho Cheese Fries ($7): Straight cut fries that are a little cold and hard. I thought it will be at least warm as it took so long to be served.

MaChamp’s Breakfast ($18): A little of everything. Onion marmalade toast, pancake coin with maple, scrambled eggs, sauteed mushrooms, caramel-glazed chicken bratwurst and greens. For a usual big breakfast, it will turn out savory, instead, it’s rather sweet for the case of flavour flings. But i would say it’s quite a good rendition of the typical big breakfast, just that, more effort has to be made in balancing out the taste and flavors.

Atlantic Shirred Eggs ($16): Decided to order this dish for a try as it is something different and new from the usual. Made of cream, smoked salmon, spinach & shallots served with toasted bread. I was so looking forward to this dish as i saw from other blogs how runny the yolks were however it turns out to be rather disappointing. The waiting time for the food was pretty long, at least a good 20 minutes, so i expected something decent to at least worth the time i have waited for but when the food was served, i was dangs, the yolks and white are simply overcooked. I’m sure everyone could see from the picture itself. Shirred eggs are supposedly to be baked with the white set and yolk remains soft. Sadly this wasn’t the case. The salmon is a tad too salty too.
To sum up all, i believe what this cafe is lacking is the consistency in the food served. They really have pretty good menu containing all time favorites to some unique additions to start off with, and what they need now, is to work on the balance of taste, consistency and serving time of the dishes to bring about better dining experience for the patrons.

Simply overrated OK Dec 24, 2014

Heard about the craze of long queue at Honey Creme shortly after the trending of llao llao few months back. When i first walked past Honey Creme when it was just newly opened, the queue is literally insane long and i didnt really want to spend the time queuing so i gave it a miss at the start. But i heard about how good it was in Korea though i didnt get to try it when i was there ): so i was like, yes, i should go try it one of the days. & yes, finally, i got the chance to try it just few days back. It was on a Sunday after lunch and to my surprise, there was no queue! So obviously, we know we have to grab this chance to grab those honey creme cups for trying!

We wanted to try this Xmas edition of Irish Cream, but the machine was down. So we stick back to the original choices.

Multi-grain Honey Creme: Its basically sprinkled with finely blended powdered form of multi grains. Nothing too fantastic or special about it.

Original Cotton Candy Honey Creme: Well, the looks are definitely more appealing than how it taste. It tasted like Mr Bean Ice cream to me. While some mentioned that it just taste slightly better than McDonald vanilla soft serve. So whichever it is, its up for you to decide!
In conclusion, its definitely not worth queuing for hours. The quantity is small and there’s really nothing much a WOW factor to it.

I was first attracted by the decorations of PODI which is located near the fountain in the basement of Raffles City. Their decorations are simple and clean yet alluring. I guess many would have known by now, PODI which stands for Pure. Offbeat. Delicious. Infusion is from the creators of Cedele. Unlike Cedele which is commonly known to us for their desserts, salads and sandwiches, PODI offers a variety of mains.

Their menu is infused with a mixture of brunch food, starters, burgers, grills, pasta and dessert. I would say quite a decent menu filled with different choices. Prices are quite reasonable for a place like PODI.

We are kind of spoilt for choice, there’s just too much for us to choose from! But whichever the case is, we ordered a mixture of starters and main for trying.

Wild Mushroom Soup ($7): Creamy and filled with bits of wild mushroom. It came with a strip of toasted garlic bread.

Mussels in Garlic Butter Sauce ($10): I was filled with much anticipation for this dish actually. But it kind of disappoint me. ): Garlic butter sauce is quite diluted, tasted more of a milky cream instead. It lacks of the aromatic buttery and garlic-ky flavor which i was looking forward to. The mussels are a little too overcooked too. Nevertheless, it came with a few different kind of bread toasts which i presume it’s to go with the sauce but the sauce is a little too watery for it.

Truffle Fries ($12): Generous serving of the usual fat fries. Subtle taste of truffle, not too strong, with sprinkles of herbs but it gets a little too sick of it after eating. Good for sharing with more people.

Crabmeat Konbu Aglio Olio ($18): A dish cooked with house prawn oil, chilli and cherry tomatoes, with sprinkle of konbu seaweed, rocket leaves and parmesan cheese. We opted for linguine for our pasta choice. Pasta is well cooked, al dente, well flavored with the sauce. Chunks of crabmeat can be seen, they were fresh and crunchy. Overall flavor of the sauce is similar to that of a spicy tomato based. Not too bad i feel.
Quite a pleasant dining experience at PODI with a nice atmosphere but i believe there’s a substantial amount of MSG used in the food too. It gets a little salty and thirsty after the whole meal.

Hot Buffalo for a Try! OK Nov 21, 2014

Categories : Bars/Lounges | Burgers and Sandwiches

It feels all pumped up once you step into BWB. BWB's theme revolves around boxing with a tv screening boxing matches while the dining concept is a food fight between Burgers and Wings! The whole place is not too brightly lighted, a little dim with the boxing arena feel yet bright enough to see where you are going and to eat your food comfortably.

Extensive menu ranging from burger choices to wings choices to some other pasta and pizza choices. They served some light alcohol too.

Following are pictures of the food selection available from the free flow tapas bar.

These little bouncy eggs are definitely one of the better tapas appetizers!

Cold salads selection such as tomato salad, apple salad and glass noodle salad

Tortilla chips, crackers and popcorn

Some simple tapas food - Butter rice, Quesadilla and a stew.

Desserts selection like chocolate crumble, mini cakes.
Here's our main course, we ordered 2 kind of wings with the add on free flow tapas bar.

Hot Buffalo Wings: Deep fried chicken wings with spicy sauce. Choice of level from mild to medium to suicide. We chose the medium level. The sauce is pretty good, spicy with tangy lemony flavor in it. Has the kick for a medium level and the tangy spiciness lingers in your mouth after eating.

Mozzarella Jumbo Wings: Mozzarella cheese stuffed wings with smoked garlic and barbeque sauce. But i find the wings quite disappointing. There's no sign and traces of any mozzarella cheese been infused into the wings in any form. It just tasted like normal fried chicken wings. The sauces on the other hand tasted pretty good. The smoked garlic is quite unique. Could taste tinge of garlic but not too overpowering and its rather refreshing.

Their tapas is pretty decent. I pretty like the slow cooked onsen egg with ponzu sauce among all the tapas available. Not too raw and not too cooked, one slurp into your mouth with the yolk bursting within. Ponzu sauce is a citrus based soy sauce. Tart with thin and light consistency. It goes pretty well with the egg, overall a very light appetizer. First time trying quesadilla, i think the closest food to quesadilla i tried before is like KFC meltz. Quesadilla is like a flour tortilla containing savory fillings. Not too bad for a first timer trying it.

Their desserts are generally average tasting, not too bad neither is it too fantastic. Desserts like mango mousse cake and ice cream will never goes wrong. For some desserts, once it's finished, some will be replaced by other desserts, so if there is one you really like, better take it before it's gone for good!
