Categories : Frozen Yogurt

Shortly right after the llao llao and Honey Creme craze in Singapore, a distinct pop-ups of all the various yoghurts and soft serves are hot right on their trails. Milk & Honey is one of the many that catches my attention because of their yoghurt parfaits. Well what’s yoghurt alone now, it’s too mainstream. We need something more than that, something not just only appetite whetting but also visually enticing.

Milk & Honey has definitely fulfill this point. Not only do they have a variety of yoghurt parfait to choose from, each and every one of them just looks super tempting! It’s like a yoghurt filled with ingredients layer after layer. & the choices are rather refreshing yet with a good combination of both the all time favorites such as the fruity & chocolatey flavors and rising top sellers like the royal honey. & if nothing is to your liking, you can customize your very own parfait!

As we bought a voucher to use, so our choices were limited as we can only choose parfaits that are of a particular price. & by the time we reached there, quite a few of their ingredients were sold out, so we got to replace it with some others kind. In the end, Citrus Combo & Mango Passion fruit were our last choices. I thought that their yoghurt tasted a little special, it’s kind of like those Meji, Alive series kind of yoghurt if you get what i mean, but the frozen version. The taste is much more sourish compared to the other frozen yoghurts. Their marshmallows were not too bad, a little soft and springy and i like their use of frozen fruits, the combination was kind of nice in my point of view. & the yellow looking thing at the very top of the yoghurt tasted like a mixture of marshmallow & mua chee. Chewy yet a little soft. But to pay between $7.80-$9.80 for it, i guess it is not attractive to the point that will make me return again. In fact, it's lacking of a distinct taste that is unique to them.

We have to admit that with so many new yet similar concept stores coming up almost all at the same time, we are really not lacking of any choices and it’s really hard to attract and ensure that the customers are willing to go back the second time.

Well-infused flavors  Smile Mar 10, 2015

Categories : Café | Pasta | Burgers and Sandwiches

“Home is where the heart is” A very cozy and warmly themed To-gather cafe located just a stone throw from Bedok 85. It has since expanded from their initial cafe to accommodate more diners. I like how inspirational thoughts were scribbled and printed on as part of their cafe decoration. Their menu served a modest array of fusion food with touch of local flavors and known best for their matcha lava cake.

It’s definitely a home away from home for the young ones! Besides being a good place for some gathering and catching up, it also has the best lunch deal for the students! When you’re sick of the usual and typical lunch sets everywhere, you know where you can turn to now!

So we decided to order a couple of dishes to share, first up is the Soup of the day ($3.60) which is Cream of Mushroom. Consistency is thin but it has a thick creamy mushroom flavor! Simple dish yet it’s well plated.

Together Sampler Platter ($8.90) is basically a little of every thing. In contrast to the soup, i must say the outlook does look a little disappointing, and the servings looks a little too miserly. Taste is pretty normal like the typical fried food you get from the frozen corner in the supermarket.

We decided to order their most 2 recommended mains – Pork Cordon Bleu ($10.90) & Grilled Pandan Chicken Chop ($8.90). Every main is served with a side salad & chips. I like their dressing for the salad, it has a tinge of citrus flavor to it. What most people worry about serving food like pork chop is it turning out too tough. But their Pork Cordon Bleu is not the case, it’s not too thick and it’s tender with the cheese oozing out. On the other hand, for the Grilled Pandan Chicken Chop, doused with light creamy coconut sauce and salsa enhances the overall aroma of the dish and the chicken brings out a light flavor of pandan. A well-infused dish i would say.

Since we are there, how could we not try their famous! We ordered both their Matcha & Chocolate Lava Cake with a scoop of ice cream, $6.90 & $5.90 respectively. Chocolate is something that doesnt go wrong, and matcha is something different that is worth a try. So what’s my convict? Generally, their lava cake is moist and dense. Yes, its true that Matcha Lava Cake is kind of special, but somehow the matcha flavor is not really there and the matcha lava is kind of too sweet to my liking. It gets a little too ge-lard after eating for long. Chocolate lava cake was otherwise. The warm lava is thick, creamy and has a bittersweet taste! Sometimes, the good old ones are still the best!

Great food at cheap price! Smile Mar 01, 2015

2 years odd old Penny University is definitely standing strong along the stretch of East Coast Road. Strong aroma of coffee brew welcomes you once you step into the cafe. A corner of the cafe is decorated with bookshelves making it like a reading chilling corner. & a thing to note is that the wait is crazily long during the weekends! You may wonder why with so many cafes around right now, but it’s just for 2 simple reason, Cheap & Quality food.

Since the last time i tried a babycino i begin to fall in love with it, partly due to the mini marshmallow i must say. Babycino ($4) are basically frothed milk without the caffeine. & topped with mini marshmallow for some sweetness when melt in your mouth. As i’m not a milk lover, i find it a little too overwhelming for me, i’ll probably go for the chocolate flavor the next time i drop by there.

As you may or may not know by now, Penny university do not really serve the typical all day breakfast where you can get it almost in any cafe. They had something simpler, not too fanciful, and it started all with toasts and croissants with scrambled eggs or something healthy like yoghurt with granola. And this Turkish Eggs ($8) caught my attention almost instantly. 2 poached eggs on lightly whipped yogurt, topped with homemade spicy Moroccan harissa sauce and oregano leaves, served with toasted bread. Very light and refreshing flavor, sourish yoghurt with the savory eggs. A very special and delightful combination i would say. You could add on smoked salmon or ham / turkey at some extra penny.

We wanted to try their buttermilk waffle but it was sold out on that day, so we decided to go for their Brownie with ice cream ($5.50). Very chocolatey and nutty. It’s a little dry and crumbly too. Goes well with their generous scoop of vanilla ice cream nonetheless.

Overall, a cafe still keeping their prices affordable and not compromising the quality of food all these while. It’s definitely commendable and worth a visit when you’re near the vicinity.

Food is a piece of art Smile Feb 21, 2015

Categories : Café | Hotel | Desserts and Cakes | Pasta | Chinese Soup | Steaks and Grills

A well hidden artisian cafe right at the basement of Big Hotel, beside their reception corner. Well, the simplicity in the design with the use of just black metallic furniture and wall decorations against the white wall and grey cemented floor, kind of make the cafe stand out from the rest in a different way. With nothing to look around at, it redirects the focus of the customers back to the food itself. Indeed, i couldn’t deny that a lot of effort and thoughts was put into their food’s outlook.

Froth’s menu is kept simple yet with a variety to choose from, with a mixture of all time favorites from various cafes to a few fusion specialty of their own. & we decided to order all their chef’s recommendation for a try.

Don’t this look like a piece of art to you? Grilled Portobello ($12.90) with truffle mushroom puree laid out like the soil base for the ‘growing’ white asparagus, roasted potatoes and grilled portobello slices and traces of truffle mayo all around. We are amazed by how this dish was served to us in the artistic way. Not only does it appeal to us visually but definitely also entices our taste buds. Very strong mushroom flavor and i must say the roasted potatoes are really good and crispy.

Don’t underestimate this Cheesy Lobster Sandwich ($22.90). Served with golden crispy shoe string fries and the slipper lobster are neither in minced nor chunks but as a whole with cheesy sauce and accompanied with toasted bread and some fresh veggies! Meat is definitely fresh and crunchy! The taste is light yet cheesy. Kind of love this dish pretty much.

I guess everywhere is serving salmon in their menu now. & it’s kind of hard for this Pan-fried Salmon ($20.90) served with slow cook roasted vegetables to stand out from the rest. The taste of salmon is just so-so but i do like how crispy the salmon skin was.

This Seafood Tom Yum Risotto ($23.90) was way better than the salmon. Fresh and big seafood was used in the dish, and the sauce was a little special. Though it’s tom yum but it brings out a japanese curry flavor subtly. It seems like the fusion of both and i find the taste pretty interesting. One of my favorite mains there!

Of course there’s a need for dessert to end off the meal. Their famous Taro Waffle with a scoop of Earl Grey Ice Cream ($12.90) that is all over the instagrams and blogs. Crispy waffle with taro jam in between the waffle and droop-lets of taro all over. I like how the texture and taste of their waffle is like, it was kind of different from the usuals. Also, the waffle with taro brings out an intriguing taste of lavender. It’s a must try when you’re there!
In general, their plating and freshness in all the ingredients used is praise worthy. However, for some of the dishes, the taste could further be enhanced. All in all, i feel that we are probably paying more for the look of the dishes instead of their flavors. It will be a good recommendation for special occasions or times when you need some pampering.

Chewy Chunky Ice-Cream Smile Feb 08, 2015

Another ice cream parlor that has joined the stretch along North Bridge Road is none other than Twenty Grammes! A humble, neat and clean environment that's welcoming for an afternoon tea.

A menu filled with varieties of coffee, tea and desserts available in store. Alternatively, there's some cakes on display too. They are rather yummy looking and appetizing!

& their wide range of bold ice cream flavors! The ice cream have pretty unique texture, quite different from the usuals i would say. Unlike the creamy, rich, smooth ice-cream, most of them are mixed with mochi or some bits and chips within, so they are kind of chewy and chunky. But it may get a little too tiring from chewing and the taste may get a little too ge-lard.

My choice of ice cream Triple C & Mango Tango. Triple C consist of caramel and chocolate with bits and pieces of chocolate crunch. Overall flavor is well-blended together and not too overwhelming. On the other hand, for Mango Tango, it is pretty fruity tasting but lean a little towards the sweeter side. Not too bad a choice for some ice cream treats when i'm passing by it the next time!
