You got to nail this popular cafe, Populus Coffee & Food Co, along 146 Neil Road! It gets real crowded on weekends and the waiting time easily gets up to 30mins as there’s limited seating capacity. Strongly advisable to make a reservation before dropping by! A very vintage and classique storefront with retro prints flooring, opening its door to a chic and bustling coffeehouse brimming with vibrancy. A gastronomical cafe dishing out contemporary brunch signatures and specialty coffee.

The Populus Scramble ($18). I really love their signature silky soft creamy scrambled egg with a hint of cheesiness against the crispy flaky toasted croissant. The best combination you would ever ask for and definitely one of the best scrambled egg i have tasted before! Streaks of bacon adding a torch of savoriness to this brunch item.

Heirloom Rendang Donburi (Limited Edition; $20). This will be a perfect marriage of japanese and malay cuisine. Homemade heirloom recipe rendang, peranankan archar, daikon, carrot & zuke pickles and seasoned japanese rice. A usually light japanese dish spiced up with appetizing archar and heavier tasting tender rendang. It's a refreshing pairing to the eaters.

Seafood Linguine ($25). Linguine braised in seafood bisque?! Can you imagine how flavorful it actually is? Ingenious replacement of usually white wine base to something more umami in flavor enhancing and bringing the whole taste of sea to a next level. With the abundance use of real succulent solid ingredients is what makes the dish worth every cents of penny you paid for.
All in all, it’s a place filled with arousing interest and alluring you to give it’s remaining delicacies a try.

Nostalgic Chinese Flavors Smile Apr 24, 2016

Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Restaurant | Dim Sum | Seafood

Yum Cha has opened its first door in Chinatown away from the hustling city life many years back and now i’m back there for their Mother’s Day Menu Special. Imagine a picturesque of servers busily pushing carts of fresh, piping hot, mouth watering, delicately made dim sum delicacies right to your table or a busy scene of taking orders from the customers. Yes, that’s what you see when you’re at Yum Cha. That aside, everyone know Mother’s Day is just round the corner, wrecking your brain to see where you can bring your mum to for a sumptuous meal? Here's your answer!

(Mother’s Day Special) Braised Pork with Preserved Vegetables Bun ($2/pc) – A good balance of fats and meat with savoriness from preserved vegetables wrapped with warm and soft steamed bun. All is good but for a thin film of coat at the exterior of the bun that was a little off the usual softness.

(Mother’s Day Special) Pan Fried Salted Fish Bun ($5/3pcs) – With bottom of the bun seared to golden brown and flavorful filling made from salted fish paste and minced meat. Overall taste is light but with a distinct salted fish note. Definitely suit the palette of a salted fish lover.

(Mother’s Day Special) Almond Tarts ($3.20/3pcs) – Filled the core with sweet almond custard against the soft, flaky crusty tart. The custard is brimming with sweet almond flavor. It can be served chilled or warm.
Beside having to taste the special menu for Mother’s Day, we get to savor some of Yum Cha ala carte and dim sum dishes too!

Signature Salted Egg Prawns – This was a total hit for the night! Unlike the typical golden salted egg yolk prawn, Yum Cha has taken another innovative approach of incorporating the aroma and flavor of the salted egg yolk to the deep fried prawns.Loving how the freshness and sweetness of prawns is preserved yet with traces of salted egg scents and flavors.

Black Pepper Beef with Lotus – Tender beef slices that were extremely soft and well soaked up in the black pepper sauce makes it a good dish to go with rice! It will be much better if the lotus chips are a little more crispier!

Fried Carrot Cake – The perfect texture of crispy on the exterior, moist and soft on the interior.

Crispy Fried Beancurd – Another highlight of the night! Made up of 7 different flavor blend of ingredients as the dry mix gave the fried beancurd a sweet, salty and spicy flavor to it. A very interesting taste to the taste buds. A bite into the fried beancurd, sinks your teeth into a cube of piping hot, soft and smooth melts in your mouth seafood tofu! Indeed a delightful tofu creation.

Fried Vermicelli Seafood – Vermicelli filled with strong wok hei aroma and generous serving of succulent seafood consisting of scallops, prawns and fish slices. Perfect ending dish to a series of dim sums! Here the dim sum menu for dinner at a glimpse! Look forward to their ala carte dishes too, it will not disappoint you either. To sum up all, most of the dishes at Yum Cha are lighter tasting, and thus there will always be room for more!

I have been wanting to check out Kuvo, so the chance came by timely with Restaurant Week! Conveniently located at the second level of Orchard Shopping Centre, with Somerset as the nearest MRT station.

If you have not known by now, Kuvo is an original lifestyle and gastronomic concept by TCC. Kuvo is all dressed in a charming with hues of elegance for their interior and ambiance, an ambiance that makes it great for a date night with an overview of the bustling streets of Orchard Road.Dedicated dinner menu for the Restaurant Week.

Entree King Prawn on Crab Timbale – Lightly grilled crunchy king prawn on a bed of refreshing umami and sweet tasting with a hint of sour crab timbale. It’s good in a way you could taste and feel the texture of the fresh shredded crab right on your palette. A true delight entree of quality ingredients.

Main Course Char Grilled Angus Ribeye – Loved how the steak is done medium and well seared, with the right texture, tender and juicy but not at all bloody. The accompanying jus is just perfect and not too overpowering the ribeye. Did i forget to mention, the ribeye steak came in 2 slabs! Which i thought was pretty generous of themsmile

Main Course Grilled Barramundi – an interesting fusion of asian flavor to this dish. Angel hair tossed perfectly in curry pesto sauce, as though the pasta strands are curry pesto flavored in nature. Fresh and soft barramundi with it’s skin crisp was lighter in taste, which blended in well with the heavier tasting pasta.

Dessert Warm Summer Berries Almond Cake – prettily plated dessert but was a little too heavy for me to savor and appreciate despite the cake being moist and not too sweet. It was really good, but it’s just too floury for me to ingest after the 2 good courses! I would greatly prefer a much lighter dessert such as a panna cotta or creme brulee though.😀
All in all, it was a good dining experience with Kuvo. The service and food served was superb!

For Quirky Flavored Waffles Smile Apr 09, 2016

Montana Singapore is a successor from previously know Montana Brew Bar revamped with additional 2 arms – South Bronx Burgers and Fabulous Dough all under the roof of POMO. Before venturing into the burgers and donuts, let’s take a quick peek into the main Montana Singapore known for their quirky delicious savory and sweet waffles .Beside their creative waffles, you’ll realised the pasta served on the menu has a twist made to its flavors too!

After much deliberation, with one stomach space only, we decided to go for their Assam Crab Waffle ($18). Inspired by kedah laksa, this assam herbs-spiced waffle is topped with seasoned crab meat and pineapple cucumber salsa, served with assam gula-melaka mayo. The waffles are denser with edges of crispiness, not too overwhelming taste with the accompaniment of refreshing chunky crab meat and pineapple cucumber salsa. You may heighten the taste with the sweet sour assam gula-melaka mayo. All in all, it was an intriguing dish filled with a medley of surprising flavors. I’ll be back for more, will you?

Meat Indulgences Smile Mar 20, 2016

Categories : Latin American/South American | Steaks and Grills | BBQ | Buffet

Heard about Carnivore? The concept of Carne & Caipirinha is quite similar to Carnivore with the difference of them being the one and only brazilian churrascaria in Singapore that uses charcoal fire for slow-roasting quality meats retaining the meat’s rich flavors and finishing off with an irresistible smoky fragrance. Not forgetting that their meat buffet galore are accompanied with a salad bar too. The buffet prices differs between Happy Hour & Regular Hours. More details at the end of the post!

Let’s take a peek what’s there in their salad bar selection. It basically consists selection of gourmet salads, pastas, rice and their very own traditional Brazilian Feijoada (it’s a kind of black bean stew with pork trimmings, be it the meat, ears etc that was used).

There you see in the third tray from the left sits the traditional Btrazilian Feijoada, the flavor was actually quite good, it’s a little light and mellow on the taste buds but the meat were a little tough to ingest.

Some condiments accompanying your meats. The refreshing salsa is the best accompaniment to the heavily seasoned meat cuts.

Cheese bread to kick start your buffet. This cheese bread is simply fascinating, it’s warm and has a chewy cheesey texture within. Small yet highly addictive.

Refreshing and tangy with a bite of citrus, it’s little wonder that Caipirinha is one of Brazil’s signature tipple. Refreshing and sublime flavours of fresh limes infused with a shot of the finest liquor.

After gourmet of salads, appetizers and drinks, are you all set for the buffet line? At Carne & Caipirinha, you get to set your own eating pace with the use of these 2 sided green and red card. When it’s a green, it’s a go-ahead to the Passadors to carve dining portion of meat off the skewers right on to your dining plates, while if it’s a red, it will means that the Passadors will stop serving you while letting you to take a rest from all the delicacies.

There are a total of 15 premium cuts to choose from, with each and every of them directly imported from Brazil which brings about a robust and satisfying taste. The first two that you are looking at now are Pork Sausage and Chicken Fillet wrapped in Bacon. The pork sausage has a sour flavor to it while the chicken fillet wrapped in bacon is firm and bountiful.

Chicken thigh that was tender and juicy.

Cubes of roasted Pork Belly that was actually meaty and savory but the skin was a tad too disappointing. Only if it was crackling good.

Besides pork and chicken, Lamb Leg, Beef Rump and Beef Hump were served too. Personally i preferred their Beef Hump than their Beef Rump, it’s more tender and juicer. Their Lamb Leg is not a bad choice too if you do not mind the smell of the lamb. Missing here are their Beef Rump Cap and Beef Rib.

We were warned not to eat more than 4 of these Fish Cubes as they are high in fat content which our body may not be able to digest fully. The coat is a little crispy and salty while the flesh inside is warm, moist and soft.

Chicken hearts that are not for the faint-hearted. Exotic it may sound, but the taste turns out surprisingly good and acceptable. It has a unique chewy texture with no strong aroma.

Another meat cut will be this Pork Ribs which was delectably tender yet with a firm texture.

Something sweet, juicy and refreshing to cleanse your palette amidst the endless servings of meat. Grilled Pineapples! Have more servings of this please! It will definitely help to stimulate your appetite for more meats.

Not forgetting another highlight of this restaurant – “The Firebomb” Flaming Carbonara Pasta in Cheese Wheel. Freshly cooked carbonara pasta will first be tossed in this large Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese wheel, then flaming cocktail consisting a secret blend of 3 different alcohol will be poured in. The flames will char the pasta and melt the cheese, turning it into a beautifully balanced cream sauce with intoxicating aroma. We tried both version of the Carbonara Pasta, with and without the alcohol. “The Firebomb” Carbonara Pasta has a sweet aftertaste with trailing aroma of liquor while the normal Carbonara Pasta has a strong creamy and cheesy aftertaste which was more savory and desired for. Both versions have its own merits, it just depends on individual liking. Just to note “The Firebomb” pasta is available at an additional of $10 per serving.
All in all, it will be a heaven for meat lovers and food lovers who prefers heavily seasoned food or stronger flavors.
