Hongkong! Cantonese cuisine! Dim sum! My favourite! Boy, was I thrilled when I saw this place. Can't wait to check it out.
Tastefully renovated restaurant

Tastefully renovated restaurant

Tastefully renovated with a class of its own, My Dining Room not only serves fine cuisine but also provides excellent service. Polite & attentive staff keeps filling up your cup with tea and changes your plate every now and then.
Wide variety

Wide variety

Thinking of having gatherings and prefer a little privacy? You can make advance booking for their private rooms. However, a minimum spending must be met. Alternatively, you can just enjoy their cuisine at their open dining area.

And......my dim sum Sunday brunch starts now!

Baked Abalone Pie 崧化鲍鱼批 (S$8, 3pcs)
When east meets west. Creamy pie with crispy pastry and two little abalone inside. My first reaction was - abalone pie!? A bite into it immediately makes my doubts disappear. Smoothness of the creamy base with the springy texture of the abalone plus the crispy pastry, everything complements so well with each other. No wonder its a dish that is highly recommended by the staff.

Baked Char Siew Bun with Butter 雪山叉烧包 (S$6, 3pcs)
One may wonder, this is a common item that you can find in most chinese restaurant that serves dim sum. Agree, but we still went ahead with the order since this is also one of the item that the staff recommended.

The 'snow mountain' part was semi crispy with the softness of the bun combining with the not so sweet char siew filling, this is indeed fantastic. The best that I have tasted thus far.

Mini Egg Tart 康力蛋挞仔 (S$5.20, 3pcs)
One of the must have when I go for dim sum. The one they serve here is quite good. Crispy and fluffy pastry with very strong egg taste. Yummilicious!

Steamed Shrimp Dumpling 水晶鲜虾饺 (S$6, 4pcs)
Thinned skin with fresh prawns. Not too bad but no distinctive factor.

Steamed Chicken Feet with Chilli Sauce in Sichuan Style 蒸川椒凤爪 (S$5.20)
This taste a little spicier than the ones you find elsewhere. Its no surprise as it already states Sichuan Style. Chicken feet is steamed till soften together with the sauce makes this a tasty dish.

Steamed Spare Ribs with Black Bean Sauce 豉汁蒸排骨 (S$5.20)
Spare ribs was not exactly tender which is a little disappointing. Overall taste is not bad, similar to what you can find at other restaurants.

Steamed Custard Bun 奶皇流沙包 (S$5.20, 3pcs)
Though this is served hot and the custard is runny, it's a little letdown as I find the bun skin slightly thick and the custard lacking the salted taste.

Marinated Duck Wing 五香卤水鸭翼
Another recommended dish by the staff. I had my reservations on ordering this as duck meat are usually quite tough. Surprisingly, the duck wing in this warm dish is really tender. Thumbs up for the recommendation.

Mashed Taro Paste with Gingko Nuts 福果甜芋泥 (S$6)
Strong taro taste with smooth and slightly lumpy texture. They have made this deliciously good considering this comes from a cantonese restaurant.

Dragon Fruit in Ice with Red Wine 火龙果红酒雪 (S$6)
A very refreshing icy dessert. The jelly doesn't taste too sweet pairing with the dragon fruit. Added with red wine which brings the flavour to another level yet not too overpowering. A must try if you like cold desserts.

A very pleasant dining experience even though its a little pricey but the quality of the food using the finest ingredients plus the excellent service makes your every cents worth.

Yee Cheong Yuen Noodle Restaurant Smile May 25, 2015

Categories : Noodles

Being not so familiar with Holland Village, I have no knowledge that Yee Cheong Yuen has actually been in operation since 1970. Transformation over the years to this little restaurant is indeed necessary to stay competitive especially in this area that is bustled with restaurants.

They offers a wide variety of selections ranging from hor fun, noodle and rice for ala carte orders or go for their set meals which is available for 1 to 4 persons. Side dishes, claypot rice are also items available in the menu and not forgetting their roast meats too.

As this is our first visit, we ordered the set meal so that we can try a few dishes without over filling our stomachs.

2 Persons Set Meal (S$21)
The set meal comprises of Oyster Sauce Kai Lan, Dumpling Soup, Luo Han Guo drink, choice of 2 meats (chicken/char siew/roast pork) and choose Hor Fun/Noodles/Rice to complete the meal.

Chicken and Roast Pork
Choose between white or roast chicken and we went for the former. Skin is smooth and meat is tender. The roast pork is yummy too with the crispy skin and slightly salty meat.

Oyster Sauce Kai Lan
Kai lan was soft but some does taste a little bitter and oyster sauce is the best combi for this.

Hor Fun
Hor fun is soft and not sticky in texture. The gravy adds flavour to this and yet not too overpowering.

Rice
You can opt for plain white rice or chicken rice which I opted for the latter. The chicken rice is so fragrant and smooth yet not too oily.

Luo Han Guo (Hot)
A little on the sweet side but it sure taste like homemade and its soothing to the throat.

Barley (Iced)
Though its stated in the menu that it comes with luo han guo drink but I was given the choice of barley. The sweetness of the barley is just right and its not because of the ice diluting it.

I have always loved their food when they had a stall at China Square foodcourt. I missed the taste so much after they ceased operation there.

I was thrilled when my friend told me their new shop is at Far East Square. Though it took me quite awhile to visit but I am glad I finally did.

Within this compact shop, is a nett priced (no GST & service charge) bistro that had been brilliantly renovated to maximize the space to house the lunch hour crowd. They even managed to have a self serve counter in a corner just besides the order taking counter.

A glance at the menu and I am immediately spoilt for choice. So many items to try but so little stomach space. They are even having lunch promo for 5 selected items priced at S$9.90 nett.

Finally, after a round of struggle, these are the choices today.

Vegetarian Aglio (S$9.90)
Spaghetti with seasonal vegetables & mushrooms. A healthier choice for those who like it light & simple. Spaghetti might taste a little better if cooked a few sec longer.
For the health conscious 😆😆😆

Pork Belly with 63 Degree Egg (S$15.90)
Cream sauce spaghetti with pan seared pork belly and the highlight of this dish - 63 Degree Egg! Spaghetti taste so smooth & flavourful with the egg blended in. Pork belly is also not too tough and it doesn't taste oily at all. It definitely makes you feel full with the egg, cream sauce & all.

Rustic Gourmet Burger (S$19.90)
Tender & juicy beef patty topped with the main attraction of this dish - pan seared goose liver. Goose liver is pan seared till perfection that melts in your mouth. Paired with soft buns, this burger is simply irresistable!
Fantastic combination 😍😋

My Awesome Cafe 真棒堂 Smile Apr 12, 2015

Occupying the space of the previous Chung Hwa Free Clinic, a place that I have passed by numerous times but failed to notice that it is actually a cafe within even though the bright coloured lights did catches my eye.

This place is so different from those modern cafes. With no fanciful renovation, this nostalgic looking cafe gives you a comfortable and down-to-earth feel.

Love the quote displayed at the corner "ANYONE CAN BE COOL, BUT AWESOME TAKES PRACTICE".

The staff, led by a team of caucasians, displayed the fun factor in them who are also warm and friendly making you feel so at home.

As the menu isn't presented in the way that we are so used to, it did took us quite awhile to figure it out.

Other than ala carte order, they do offer set lunch priced at S$24 which includes any soft drinks, any wrap, hot coffee or tea and a scoop of ice cream/sherbet.

We didn't go for the recommended and popular My Awesome Salad as we wanted something to be able to fill our hungry stomachs.

So this is what we ordered instead.

Beef Lasagna, Bread & Salad Leaves (S$17)
Wasn't really a fan of lasagna but my dining partner wanted to try this. To my pleasant surprise, this is totally different from what I have tasted elsewhere. The texture is soft & creamy with loads of ground beef and it doesn't make you feel greasy. Some may find it too moist though.

My Awesome Sandwich (S$17)
This comprises of Smoked Salmon, Herbs Chicken Breast, Duck Rillettes and Parma Ham. Choose between soft or crusty bread for your sandwich and I opted for soft bread this time round. Salmon is fresh with the perfect smoky taste. Chicken breast its surprisingly tender and the herbs spread complements it. As for the duck rillettes, it taste good but is a little salty. In my opinion, this would taste better with crusty bread instead.

Awesome Hot Choc (Hand-Crafted Swiss) S$5.50
Hot chococlate is my must try beverage when I visits cafe. The one they serve here has a strong milky taste. Definitely for milk lovers.

Mocha (S$6)

The pricing might be a little on the high side but it balances off with the quality of the food they serve. Will return to try their My Awesome Salad.

Some years back someone bought me some muffins which made me started on a search for the location of the place with just the name.
Cozy little shop

Have always wanted to patronize this place to try out the other food that they offer which I only managed to do so a week ago.

Upon entry, we were greeted by smiley staff who didn't mind me taking photos of the shop even before we make our order.

Like other shophouses cafes, there are more seats available on the 2nd & 3rd level.

Something interesting to note is that they have a rewards programme called "The Bean Programme". Interested? Participate in five simple steps.

Now we are ready to attack the food. Let's take a look at the menu.
Many varieties available

Many varieties available

Other than their well known muffins, other items that you can find in their menu includes sandwiches, tarts, homemade pies & quiches.

All items are available in ala carte order or you can opt for a set. The set includes a muffin and a drink (except smoothies/alcoholic beverages) of your choice. However you can top up S$2 for a smoothie.

I decided to try their sandwiches but there are so many varieties to choose and all looks tempting. So I ordered the Three Sliders and opted for a set.
Delicious & yummy

The flavours I chose were:
1) Smoked Salmon
2) Ham & Cheese
3) The Char Siew

Three Sliders (Ala Carte S$10, Set S$16.50)
1) Smoked Salmon
Salmon was fresh and combined with cream cheese making this simply delicious.
2) Ham & Cheese
This was rather normal with no surprise factor.
3) The Char Siew
A unique variety in the menu. Meat is tender and overall combination is yummy. Just that it doesn't taste so much like char siew.

Matcha Latte (Ala Carte S$4.50)
My beverage choice for the set. This is really awesome. Strong matcha taste with just the right portion of milk.

My friend loves quiches and the quiche of the day happens to be her favourite - Spinach & Mushroom Quiche. So she ordered the quiche and opted for a set too.

Spinach & Mushroom Quiche (Ala Carte S$5.50, Set S$12)
Quiches are known to be creamy and cheesy. The ones here are the same with the difference that it will not make you feel too greasy after eating it.

A coffee lover's choice. Strong aroma and coffee taste. Coffee lovers must definitely try their coffee when visiting.

As I have mentioned earlier, muffins are included in all set orders. Though they have sweet & savoury muffins but we opted for the sweet flavour as this is our aftermeal dessert.

Double Chocolate and Lavender Lemon Muffin (Ala Carte S$2.80)
Double Chocolate Muffin
Baked with valrhona chocolate and two other types of chocolate chips. The muffin is moist and the chocolate taste makes this a chocolate lovers must have.
Lavender Lemon Muffin
Aroma therapy!? Chose this as I find this flavour quite special. Not a flavour that many can appreciate as the lavender is a little too overpowering.
