Paddington House of Pancakes OK Nov 12, 2015

I'm a frequent shopper at City Square Mall but didn't really took notice of this restaurant until my friends chose this place for dinner. Paddington House of Pancakes was halal certified thus attracted mainly Malay customers. The whole place was packed during dinner time and we queued for 25mins to get a seat.
There were 100 items on the menu but we only managed to order these:
(1) Monaco $19

- Lamb shoulder marinated with herbs and grilled over the fire. Served with homemade zucchini onion pancakes, accompanied by mashed potato and yogurt mint sauce.
The lamb was sliced too thin, thus over-cooking causes the meat to taste tough and chewy. The herbs marinade managed to conceal partial of the mutton fats' stench but it's more perfect when you eat it with the yogurt mint sauce. For this dish, the zucchini & onion pancakes was the highlight. Pancakes were soft, with additional crunch from the zucchini and fragrant from the onions, it's more oomph having them alone.
(2) Mexican Double Burger $22

- This huge tower of meat was made up of 1 chicken and 1 lamb minced meat patty. You do have the choice to choose 2 patties of the same kind. Chicken minced meat patty was tender, flavourful with slight char on both sides. Lamb tastes slightly inferior because of the mutton odour and patty was abit dry too. Homemade buns used in this burger was actually called the "sesame puffins". It is rather bland, definitely a healthier choice and contains buckwheat too. Other ingredients such as pineapple ring, avocado slices, tomatoes, grilled cheese and gherkins are also part of this tall burger. Side was french fries and dip given was salsa.
(3) Nice $16

- Homemade crepes wrapped with turkey bacon, chicken, prawns, mushrooms and grilled mozerrella. Finished with creamy mushroom sauce drizzled on top. This is my favourite choice among the 3. The eggy crepes were very fragrant, having slight crisp on the outside, it's yum! Pairs really well with all the ingredients, I felt myself as if I'm enjoying cheesy thin crisp pizza!!
(4) Fruit Juice- Immune Zoom $7

- Fresh juice made up of Peach, apple, honeydew and cranberry. This combination tastes rather sweet but since it indicates to have "immune zoom" effect, I gulp the whole glass down without second thoughts.
Verdict: Food was average tasting and took more than 30mins to come. Ambience wasn't great too. The whole restaurant was really noisy during mealtime and not easy to chat with friends too. I admit pancakes, crepes are really their strengths but not the meat. It might take me very long time to come patronize again, unless it's for their pancake desserts.

Spending per head: Approximately $30

Envy Coffee Cry Oct 26, 2015
Categories : English | Café

[Envy Coffee]
1 Fusionpolis Link #01-04
Nexus @ One North
Mon-Fri 7.30am-6pm
Cafe was quite hidden away in a corner at Nexus, quite unnoticeably. Its around 5-8mins walk from One North mrt station. The whole unit was quite spacious, with an estimate of 25 seats available. I went with my younger brother during lunchtime and the cafe is almost full.

We started off with ordering of our coffee. Followed by a Pesto Chicken sandwich, which we upgraded to set meal. I also redeemed a Sambal Prawn Paste chicken burger which I won in an Instagram contest and lastly, a slice of red velvet cake. The staff taking orders was rather slow and doesn't seems to know their menu well, probably a newly joined. By the way, all prices here are nett, no gst/service charge.

(1) Flat White $5
- Envy uses beans from Liberty Coffee. My flat white tastes smooth, chocolatey nutty and it's just the way I like it to be.

(2) Soup of the day $5.40
- Mushroom was Tuesday's soup of day choice. Warm, thick and creamy soup with loads of mushroom bits, it is a great starter to warm up my tummy.

(3) Pesto Chicken Sandwich $8.90
- Sandwiched between a ciabatta bread, there are greens, boiled chicken slice and pesto spread. Ciabatta was abit tough and chewy. Chicken is tender but portion was thin and pathetic (as you can see from my picture). Pesto spread did perk up the overall taste of the sandwich but really, i think amount of filling can be more generous for $8.90. Chips that came as side are not crispy too (lao-hong!!).

(4) Sambal Prawn Paste Chicken Burger $13.90
- Charcoal bun was used for this burger. Soft and fluffy describes the texture. Chicken thigh was tender but prawn paste taste wasn't really distinctive, can be heavier. And again, same as the previous sandwich, this stripe of meat was small enough to only occupy half the burger surface.
I did feedback to 1 of the owners and asked if he would consider increasing the portion of the meat as portion looks bad for a $13.90 but he brushed me off with answer like this "oh it's small? Oh ok...". And in order for myself to take a really nice photo of the burger for my Instagram, I even had to push the meat to the brim to get a great angle/view of it. Disappointed.
However, I noticed that Envy coffee don't have a proper kitchen doing the cooking. The hot food all comes out from microwave and toaster. That may also explains why the waffle fries they serve came out soft rather than crispy.

(5) Red Velvet Cake $6.80
- All the cakes at Envy are supplied from Bakery chef, none made in house. This red velvet cake texture was slight dry. The center cream cheese part was hard, texture like white chocolate block which you have just taken out from your fridge. Even the cream on top is harden. I can't be bothered to ask why after the unpleasant experiences with the 2 previous buns.

Verdict: Dining experience at Envy's was rather a disappointing one. Nice ambience but lacking in food quality. For the amount of food portions vs the price, I might not come visiting again. Thank god their coffee still works for me.

Chick and Ken OK Mar 11, 2015

Categories : Korean | Desserts and Cakes | Korean Fried Chicken

【Chick And Ken】
Owners behind Stateland & Honeycomb started another new wings joint opened at Lor Telok to follow the current Korean fried chicken trend.

Last Saturday, I went to try it out with my hubby. First impression already failed us because it's supposed to operate at 12noon but when we walk past the back alley at 12.10pm, chefs were smoking behind. When we stepped into the shop, the lady assistant told us that kitchen wasn't ready and ask us to come back 20-30mins later sad So we went to have ramen first. Our tummies were almost 80% full before we complete of actual mission of trying out the wings.
At Chick and Ken, the deco is the same as Stateland cafe. We only ordered 4 whole wings, 2 flavours of Salted egg + Yangnyeom, & a drink. No space for other dishes.

From many social media channels, I saw most people like their salted egg wings more. But for me, No WOW factor because my hubby makes better Salted Egg sauce than this 😁
Without the coated sauce, the wings are just bland wings. If only they were marinated...
Compared to the Salted Egg wings, I prefer the red ones, Yangnyeom wings smile But I prefer them to be more spicy, if possible.
Love the crunchiness of the peanuts & the nuts fragrance aftertaste that stays in my mouth
Probably I won't visit again for their wings, unless jio by friends. But I may come try their bingsu when I'm around this vicinity or if I'm super free smile

Honeycomb Frozen Yogurt OK Dec 30, 2014
Categories : Korean | Ice Cream and Gelato

[Honeycomb]
I came across this new ice cream station, Honeycomb, while cafe-ing at neighboring Stateland cafe.
It was quiet with no customers when I stepped in during meal times. Probably not much people know about them yet.
The interiors have displays of old equipments such as old skool telephone, fan, chairs etc but also with added modern items such as Craftholics plush which don't really blend in. There's only 1 lady working & she was busy pasting the logo stickers on every paper cups they using to store the frozen yogurt when I walked in.
There are 5 choices of frozen yogurt combi to chose from. Differences are the toppings which includes chocolate sauce, salted caramel sauce, matcha granola etc. I ordered the classic version, original frozen yogurt with honeycomb & liquid honey syringe. This portion is $6.00
The frozen yogurt texture is smooth, but the piece of raw honeycomb wasn't really tasted. The liquid honey from the syringe is too sweet for my liking also.
Well well, I will continue to search for better frozen yogurt smile

Macau Pork Chop Bun OK Dec 27, 2014
Categories : Burgers and Sandwiches

Macau's famous Pork Chop bun 猪扒包 finally arrives in Singapore. They have chosen serangoon NEX as their first station. Situated just next to the escalator, it's really not easy to missed it. It was a Saturday afternoon when I visited but the shop wasn't crowded.

The shop was not designed to resemble Macau, only with a big pink piggy signage & a lamp pole stating "macau" on it. The place wasn't big also, 30 seaters the most. For the menu, other than their signature bun, they do serve other choices such as pork chop rice/noodle set, curry fishballs, chicken wings, desserts etc. The prices was on the high side.

I ordered their signature 猪扒包 & a pork chop rice. It took them 10mins to serve me my bun & a little longer for my rice set which I think it's too long. The place wasn't crowded also but existing customers got to gather around the pick up area to wait for their food. The staff there wasn't well trained also. Counter staff wasn't very polite when taking orders from me & kept asking me in singlish "no more ah? Only 2 items ah? That's all ah?" 😔 Another auntie was shouting food queue number across the whole place every now & then 😂

Back to my orders. The bun oni consists of a piece of pork chop & the bun, nothing else so I don't see why the drag. It's $6.90 for your info. The meat slice was thin, abit dry & not flavourful enough. The punch is not there whereas the marinate doesn't give you the wow factor. I wouldn't say it was not nice but just no surprise. Although I can't remember the taste I had in Macau but I think these served locally can be improved.

The pork chop rice set comes in small portion also. $7.90 with the same type of pork chop slice but with a sunny side up, little rice & accompanied by their curry gravy. It's was too small a portion to feed my hubby. Hahaha.. Sunny side up was overcooked & no runny egg yolk. But I could say the curry gravy saved the day. The curry gravy was thick & fragrant, tastes very different from our usual local nonya curry. It goes really well with the relatively bland pork chop & rice. So I guessed the curry fishballs should be good smile

I will give this place another try someday, to try other dishes on the menu, especially the pork chop polo bun which was yet to be available when I visited. Hopefully the polo bun version can be the hero! By then, I wished that staff performance can improved too, it's such an important factor for service line.
