love the salted egg yolk crabs Smile Jul 15, 2011

This is one of the must-go restaurant if I have craving for salted egg yolk crabs. The crabs are relatively big and juicy. Their other dishes are pretty decent too. For instance, their signature dish is Marmite Chicken. Their chicken reminds me of those sold at 4 fingers Bonchon chicken. A little sweet and salty.

We had the stir fry kailan with garlic too. Nothing spectacular. If you are into more seafood, try their butter cereal prawns. They are really crispy on the outside and the prawns they serve are really fresh.

It is recommended to make reservations on weekends. They have a few tables in air-conditioned room. So if you want to eat comfortably without any perspiration, do call in for reservations.

best crab beehoon soup Smile Jul 11, 2011

Mellben serves the best crab beehoon soup ever. The soup is super tasty and their crabs are usually huge and fresh. Besides the beehoon soup, their black pepper and butter crabs are highly recommended. The black pepper crabs are on the spicy side..so for those who can't take spicy stuff, you can go for the butter crabs. They are not over-done.

However, the queue for Mellben on weekends is really terrible. I waited 1.5hrs to get a table and another hour for the food to be served. If you really crave for crabs on weekends, please turn up at 5pm.

above expectation Smile Jul 11, 2011

I read the review below and decided to give it a try myself. I must say the food was above expectation. My friend and I ordered their signature fried rice (with prawns). It was really good! There were fish roe, prawns, scallops etc. The fish roe, especially, made the rice really fragrant and it gave the rice an extra taste. Not too fishy though there were different types of seafood in it. Its a must try. smile

We also ordered a pot of boiled soup with cucumbers and pork ribs. The soup was refreshing but a little pricey though. It cost about $15 for a pot that was just enough for 2-3 pax. The other dishes we had were hot plate toufu with minced pork, as well as stewed chicken in claypot. Both dishes were fantastic especially the toufu. The toufu was served with fried egg and minced pork. The sauce went really well with steam rice.

Last but not least, we ordered mango pudding as dessert. This was the highlight of the entire meal. It was not too sweet and the pudding was very smooth and tasty. However, I thought the serving was quite little for the big bowl they had. tongue

Tried Gyu a few times and I really liked their quality of food and service. The spicy miso pork belly and pork collar went really well with the lettuce wrap. The seafood selection were very fresh as well. If you are a beef lover, they have a very wide selection of beef to choose from.

Besides the food, their service is excellent. They will change the grill and top up the charcoal frequently. The service crew is always ready to for your orders and enquiries. First class service, definitely. smile

great local food Smile May 30, 2011

My friend and I chanced upon this restaurant and decided to give it a try. We ordered the recommended dishes such as Deep Fried Chicken leg, Grandma's Heavenly Four Kings, Fried Prawns with Salted Egg and Tau Hu Goreng.

All the dishes were great! smile The deep fried chicken leg's skin was really crispy on the outside and the meat was tender on the inside. The Heavenly Four Kings were actually stir-fried lady's finger, brinjal and long beans with sambal. The sambal tasted really well, not too spicy. I liked the prawns with salted egg the most. The salted egg was not over-whelming and the prawns were crispy and crunchy. The tau hu goreng was superb as well. The sauce that came with it tasted a little sweet and tangy. It went really well with the cucumber slices and tau hu.

This was a really pleasant surprise to us as we did not expect such good standards. Will definitely want to try other recommended dishes the next time.
