prawn noodles OK May 04, 2012

Categories : Hawker Centre

Not sure what to eat, I decided to just settle for the stall that is nearest to where I am sitting at. I ordered the prawn noodles dry, and got the soup on another bowl. The prawn soup is very tasty and I couldnt help but drink spoonfuls of it. The noodles are cooked just right and the bean sprouts add some crunch to the noodles. I like to add chilli to the noodles to further enhance its taste. The only thing that is not too good is the prawns because it doesn't seem that fresh on the day that I ate it.

unique bak kut teh  OK May 02, 2012
Categories : Singaporean | Hawker Centre | Restaurant

Ah Hoon Bakuteh is a very unique bak kut teh stall because it offers the Malaysian-style black herbal version in addition to the white clear or peppery bak kut teh that we are familiar with. Of course, we ordered both to try, one white and one black to compare the taste. The Malaysian-style black herbal broth is not as herbal as I imagined. In fact, I can't taste any herbal taste and it seems like it is more like it is just flavoured with dark soya sauce. In addition, the Malaysian-style bkt has tau pok and mushrooms in it as well. However, although it also taste good, but we prefer the normal clear peppery bkt. I guess it is simply a matter of us being used to the clear peppery broth.

beef noodles OK May 01, 2012

Although this is not my first time to Lailai, it is my first time trying their signature beef noodles. There is a choice of either soup version or dry version and I went for the dry version. The noodles took a while to be served even though there isn't much people in the restaurant.

Anyway, the noodles come with a thick gooey dark coloured sauce with beef chunks. The beef is tender and flavourful though the tendons made it quite difficult to bite. The noodles, as a result of the thick sauce, ended up being quite salty and strong flavoured. The noodles also do not really have a bite in them. It seems like it is overcooked. Overall, I think their beef noodles are not as nice as imagined.

steamboat OK May 01, 2012

Last sunday, the whole family went for a buffet at Joaquim. This restaurant is at Suntec City, so you definitely will not miss it. The steamboat concept is quite nice in that each of us had our own individual pot to cook our food instead of the usual big steamboat where everyone shares. I choose the tom yum soup base which is just ok in my opinion as I had better ones before. Also, the steamboat is really normal and not value for money since the ingredients are very common and normal steamboat ingredients. As for the more expensive meats like beef, it took quite long for them to refill it, so I didn't get to eat a lot of it. In addition to the steamboat, there are also desserts and a cooked food section, but nothing really stands out. Overall, given this price paid, I will definitely go elsewhere for buffet.

walnut cake  OK Apr 29, 2012

Categories : Peranakan / Nonya | Bakery | Desserts and Cakes

I had guests coming over to my house and since it was quite a last minute notice, I decided to get a cake from Bengawan Solo to serve them. I have tried the banana cake last time, so I chose the walnut cake which costs $8.80, one dollar more expensive than the banana cake. I had a slice of the cake myself and frankly I was quite disappointed with the cake. I was expecting some walnut chunks to be within the cake, but I couldn’t taste any. It just tasted more like a butter cake, with no taste of the walnuts at all. I would think that the banana cake tastes so much better and it is also cheaper as well. I will probably not order this again.
