Wafu Chicken Katsu Ramen Smile Aug 16, 2011

Categories : Japanese | Ramen

I visit Menichi regularly and I just love their side dishes but I decided to give their ramen a try. I tried their Wafu Chicken Katsu Ramen and was really pleased with the fact that the restaurant were very thoughtful. There was an explanation of the word "wafu" in their menu, which certainly helped me when deciding which ramen to try (They explained what tonkotsu and etc meant too in the menu)

The chicken cutlet was thrice the size I thought it would be (They seriously gave me a whole piece of chicken cutlet). It was tender but not really juicy? I didn't really like the chicken cutlet because it lacked of taste but my sister loved it with the sauce that had a sour taste. We don't know the name of the sauce but its similar to McDonald's bbq sauce.

The noodle itself is fine and springy. Pretty average standard. The soup, however, is the unique part of the dish. Normally whenever I eat Japanese ramen, they are tonkotsu soup. This wafu ramen however, has a chicken and seafood soup base that is added with soy sauce to create a tangy and savoury flavour. It has a special taste and its a definite must-try soup. The ramen is topped off with a piece of seaweed and Ajitsuke Tamago (Seasoned Boiled Egg). The egg is absolutely tasty. The outer layer of the egg is cooked while the parts nearing the egg yolk and egg yolk itself are half cooked. I love half-cooked eggs so it was just the kind I love.

Overall, it was delicious and worth the money! By the way, the dish actually has vegetables and bean sprouts but I requested for them to be excluded. Additionally, you can ask for noodles upsize for...FREE! They'll give you 20% more noodles (As seen in picture above).

Spending per head: Approximately $12.90(Lunch)

Ichiban sushi sells several dishes of fried chicken. This set in particular is my mother's favourite. It consists of chicken with ginger sauce, soft shell crab tempura, chawanmushu, miso soup, a bowl of rice and 2 pieces of watermelon at a price of $16.90.

The main dish, the chicken with ginger sauce comes with a generous amount of fresh vegetables. The ginger sauce gives the chicken a very unique taste and its sweet. I'm not a big fan of ginger but their ginger sauce only has a slight hint of the unbearable ginger smell hence I was able to enjoy it. The chicken itself, like other Ichiban sushi chicken dishes, was tender and moist and absolutely delicious.

Looking for Japanese food? Give Ichiban Sushi a try! Good food + excellent service! Their staff have high attention to details and are very customer-oriented. I'm a frequent customer of this restaurant and they never fail to provide me with a fantastic dining experience.

Popiah is on a roll Smile Aug 06, 2011

I was recommended by a friend to try the Nasi Lemak at Qi Ji but when I got there, the news articles they had at their display caught my eyes. Their popiah has received many positive reviews and media coverage by major Singapore newspaper publications. Although I'm not a big fan of popiah (because of the vegetables), I decided to give it a try.

Each roll of popiah (6 slices) cost $2.00. The skin is very thin and smooth and they were very generous with the fillings of the popiah. The fillings include bangkuang (jicama), egg, garlic, some sort of sauce and more. I was not able to figure out all of the fillings as the garlic taste was too overwhelming. However, it went well with the rest of the popiah so it was delicious.

I'd totally recommend popiah lovers to try Qiji's popiah.

I went to Nanxiang for some Dim Sum. The deep fried prawn dumpling was one of the chef's recommendation selection in the restaurant. It costs $4.50 for 3 pieces.

The prawn dumpling's crust is very thin and crispy. Its not too oily and has a nice flour taste. The prawn used is very fresh and meaty. It was very crunchy, sweet and juicy. Additionally, the prawn dumplings are relatively big in size which somewhat justifies the price along with its taste.

I personally really liked the deep fried prawn dumplings. They are probably the best I've had in Singapore so far. Strongly recommended!

I decided to have dinner at Saizeriya. I had the grilled fish fillet with white sauce. The grilled fish is very well cooked. It was soft and moist. It goes well with the white sauce, which was not too thick. I finished the entire thing without getting sick of the sauce. It comes along with the sweet corn and some fried potatoes. The fried potatoes are not oily and in fact a little dry. It costs only $7.90 inclusive of GST and service charge. Overall I'm pretty satisfied with the standard for the price.
