Birthday cake from secret recipe Smile Mar 20, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Bakery | Restaurant

I recently bought a birthday cake from secret recipe at Henry Park apartments. Because it was a last minute thing, we had to buy cakes off the shelf and there weren't many choices in that outlet because its a rather small and quiet place.

We settled on the Cheeze Choc ($52) cake in the end. Its made up of 3 layers: chocolate cream followed by creamy cheese layer and supported by a generous layer of digestive biscuit base. The entire cake was covered in a thin layer of chocolate. Taste wise is was very nice if you eat small portions because Secret recipe was very generous in the amount of chocolate and cheese used. However, being so dense, it cannot be consumed in larger slices because it gets too much after a while. That said, we managed to keep the cake for 6 days in the fridge without spoiling.

My only complaint was that they had only 1 size of cake and it was much too big for us to finish in the end. Perhaps Secret Recipe can consider having more sizes instead.

Ah chew desserts OK Mar 20, 2012
Categories : Chinese Desserts | Desserts and Cakes

Ah Chew desserts is located at Liang street near bugis mrt station. Despite residing opposite another similar dessert store, ji de chi, both outlets still enjoy good business, regardless of whether it's a weekday or weekend. Nevertheless, customer turnover is high and most of the time you wouldn't have to wait too long for a seat.

This time I tried the Beancurd with ginger which comes in a bamboo pot, eaten with a wooden spoon. I liked the ginger flavoured Beancurd, however, my companions found it to be an acquired taste. Other dishes we sampled were the mango ice - refreshing but a little too sweet, and the sesame paste - too watery for my liking.

Weekday dinner at ma maison OK Mar 20, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : French | Japanese | Fusion

Ma maison is a fusion between french and western cuisine. Even though it was a weekday night, the queue was still very long. We waited for more than 45 mins to be seated even though we started queueing at 630pm. So be sure to start queueing earlier if you dont want to queue.

Main courses cost around 15-20 dollars each, and portions are very small here. In fact after dinner at ma maison, we had to proceed to the food court at bugis to continue eating. We tried several steak dishes, none of which were particularly impressive. Service was quite slow and the food took very long to be served, which, considering the long queue outside, should have been quicker.

Overall I found ma maison not value for money, though the long queue suggests otherwise

Quick lunch at putien OK Mar 20, 2012
Categories : Fujian/Heng Hwa | Seafood

There was a new appetizer at putien today. It was really weird - i thought it tasted like chopped honey dew in F&N syrup. It tasted fine for the first few pieces but subsequently became really difficult to continue eating because it was really sweet, and really weird.

Since we wanted a quick light lunch, i guess we should not have gone to putien because we only ordered a fried heng hwa bee hoon ($15.90 for a serving size big enough for 2 persons to share) and the waitress was very unimpressed with the fact that we only ordered that 1 dish.

Otherwise, it was a really great meal. The noodles were chopped into very small pieces which gave it a "melt in the mouth" texture and the fried seaweed sprinkled ontop remained crispy even after a long while. I wished we had more seaweed and nuts in the dish though.

Breakfast at KFC OK Mar 20, 2012
Categories : American | Fast Food | Halal

After queueing up for the new ipad, we went to KFC for their breakfast set. I ordered a porridge breakfast set which consists of chicken porridge and tea for $3.60.

At 10 plus i expected a larger crowd, however, business was rather quiet that day and there were seats aplenty. Most of the other patrons were elderly couples or young children and their mothers.

The porridge was a little bit too sweet and we had to empty a whole packet of pepper in it to mask the sweet taste. Despite misgivings about the chicken inside the porridge (i was told its made from last night's left over popcorn chicken), i thought it wasn't that bad afterall.
