Great salad @ Brotzeit Smile Sep 10, 2011

Categories : German | Bars/Lounges

Most people order sausages at Brotzeit but I had a crispy chicken salad instead and it really trumps all other salads i've ever had. Though be warned that if your aim of eating salad is to go on a diet, this is not a salad you should consider. Their portions are quite substantial, it took me some time to finish the mountain of vegetables. and the chicken is fried, so not exactly diet friendly. The chicken remained crispy throughout my meal despite the moisture from the leaves and that was really impressive. Presentation was very pretty also!

Sinful dinner @ Fish& co. Smile Sep 10, 2011

The best side dish you can ever order at fish and co is their 'Mussels in Garlic Lemon Butter Sauce'. The mussels are fresh - all the time and they aren't stingy with their portions. The lemon butter sauce is absolutely heaven, it comes with bread so you totally should soak up all the sauce with the bread when you are done with the mussels. Eat fast though because if you leave the mussels hanging around for too long and they get cold, you are not doing this dish a service at all. Also, the bread would become soft and then it doesn't taste as good. This dish is normally served before your main course comes and from experience it normally lasts a few minutes before everybody starts fighting for the last bit of sauce to soak their bread in.

Lai Lai @ Jurong Point Smile Sep 09, 2011
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Taiwanese | Restaurant | Noodles

Though Lai Lai is more famous for its beef noodles, we ordered their set meals instead because it comes with a main course, drink and 1 side. For $14 you get beef noodle/ some special lailai noodle in soup as the main course. For $13, you get taiwan meesua or rice and pork as the main course. The taiwan meesua is served in a very small portion so hungry people, do try the other mains instead. The rice and pork wasn't as good as expected, the sauce was abit too oily, which makes the rice oily as well. The egg was great though, i think it must have been soaked in herbs for ages! For drinks they have quite a list consisting of bubble tea and fruit juices etc. Do try the jasmine bubble tea(img2), its even better than the normal milk tea bubble tea. For sides, the $14 set comes with nicer sides like the fried chicken, century egg tofu and cabbage. The $13 set comes with sides that are also nice, but just not as impressive like cold tofu, fried tofu, kailan, saba fish. We tried the cold tofu (img 4) which was topped with mince meat sauce - A MUST TRY. We also tried the fried chicken (img1) which had little fat and wasn't too oily - must nicer than KFC's popcorn chicken!

Service was a little slow though. They were quick to take orders and bill us due to the long ques waiting outside, but serving the food took very very long.

Marche @ Vivo Smile Aug 26, 2011

Boy was the que long outside Marche @ vivo - for readers planning to head to Marche, please do not be silly and que outside like us, BOOK EARLY!

Other than that, dining at Marche was a pleasant experience. Firstly, it was a lot of fun going around trying to decide what foods to try. For those who do not know, Marche uses a card system whereby you will scan your card whenever you order food from small stalls located in Marche in a style very much like a food court. At the end of your visit you will head to the check out counter where your card is scanned in and the total bill is tabulated from there. The bad thing about the card system is you tend to forget about the bill and order to your hearts content - which is great for your stomach but possibly not that great for your wallet. I spent about 30 plus per person, rather over budget but still we had a great time.

A must try is the Rosti. (see picture) This time i ordered without the sausage because we wanted to try more dishes. Its slightly oily but if you aren't that health conscious, add a huge dollop of cream and eat to your heart's content. Another must try is their apple crumble pie/bread. It was piled full of crumbs and the base was nice and hard - just the way i like my apple crumbles.

Recommended Dish(es):  Rosti, Apple Crumble

Spending per head: Approximately $35

If you are heading towards Clarke Quay central looking for a place with affordable and good Japanese Food, do give Kyomomoyama. Its on the third level of Clarke Quay central, has minimalistic deco and really great sashimi. For the price we paid for the sashimi set (under $15 if i recall correctly), it was absolutely worth it. The sashimi was fresh and they weren't stingy, each slice was fat and juicy - something that you would be hard pressed to find for the price i paid. In fact, the best thing that can be said about Kyomomoyama (apart from taste) is that their portions are always just nice, not too filling (some jap places load you with a tonne of rice) and not too little (other jap places serve food in really cute BUT very small dishes). We also tried their sushi, don sets, terriyaki chicken, none of which disappointed us. Their desserts however, left us slightly disappointed following the impressive main courses. The ice cream was of typical low end factory made product and i was expecting more flavours too. The restaurant is rather quiet so its good for a small gathering where you want to be able to talk and hear each other, but not too quiet that you feel bad for making noise.
