Ichiban Boshi--Never Disappoints Smile Jul 20, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Sushi/Sashimi

This is the second time I came to Ichiban Boshi at Vivocity after it opened few months back. I chose this place as we wanted to celebrate my mum's birthday and since my brother is footing the bill, I thought this was a good quality Japanese place that will not burn a hole in his pocket.

Unfortunately my mother doesn't feel like eating fish so she ordered the ten-don, which is tempura on rice. The ingredients were freshly fried and not too oily. Brother took the Teriyaki Chicken don, which came with big chunky pieces of well-marinated teriyaki chicken. My mother also chose a new item on the menu to share-- enoki mushroom in butter soup. What we didn't realise is that it is really more a soup than a dish.. so the mushrooms were very little. It is cooked/steamed in an aluminium foil but I must say the butter soup is quite unique.

I was greedy and ordered 2 sides--tofu salad and tonkatsu. Tonkatsu's meat was very huge chunk which is great because it means Im not just eating batter. And the tofu salad was surprisingly good! I love the sesame dressing and even if I eat it on its own I think it will fill me up.

We spent a total of $70 which is quite value for money for 5 dishes!

Had a late dinner with a friend around orchard we came to the Coffee Club outside Wheelock. I didn’t eat at Coffee Club for awhile but i always remembered compared to Starbucks, Coffee Bean and TCC, i always enjoyed the food from Coffee Club more. Somehow, it was more suited for me.

We were a little diet conscious so each of us took a salad each– Prawn Mayo and Caesar with Smoked salmon. We were pleasantly surprised by the portions, and I was very happy they were able to accomodate to my request for no cheese in my caesar. Taste was good, sauce was light enough but no eggs! Generous amount of croutons and the best must be the cheese basket it was served in. I swear to you it was hard to stop tearing up that cheese basket and eating it because it was so delightfully savoury and addictive! My friend too the prawn wasabi mayo but complained that there was no kick. Though prawns were fresh and generous, and i loved that they had tempeh in it!

We wanted a side to share but very sadly out of about 10 sides I think only 4 were available. We chose something without beef and ended up with Teriyaki chicken on potato skin. The dish was quite tasty but it should be eaten while its hot..

After eating here, I think this will be a place to consider whenever I see a Coffee Club around! We spent about $40, and there is a 15% discount on UOB or Citibank card holders!

Recommended Dish(es):  ceasar salad and prawn wasabi mayo salad

New joint serving noodles OK Jul 19, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Noodles

I Wan Noodles replaced a former Chinese restaurant at Maxwell Chambers and looked promising with its varieties of noodles. We had the chilli crab noodle and the szechuan noodles. For the price and quality of ingredients it is not bad, but quantity is too little. For a small eater might be the right portion, but for any normal male I think the portion is way too small.

Back to taste - Chilli Crab Noodles came with a tasty sauce which is not too spicy and a little sweet, but the chilli crab portion is too small! Just one part of 2 legs, and we all know how small soft shell crabs are right? Just not enough to satisfy my palate.

For the Szechuan Noodle, it was not overly spicy, but lacking in ingredients as seen from the picture - there was only 1 fried wanton in the dish!

Waiting time during lunch time is at least half an hour as well.

Taiwanese Snack Shack OK Jul 19, 2013
Categories : Taiwanese | Café | Kids-Friendly

Came here for a quick lunch--- as any taiwanese snack places, they sell the usual fired chicken cutlet and mee sua. The strange thing is they do not sell oyster mee sua! They only had chicken--topped with few pieces of their fried chicken cutlets, or one which is the intestines like the ones u find on the Taiwanese street markets. It is tasty but lack the oomph of the oyster types.

The bento cames with some fried chicken pieces, vegetables and a soy egg. I would say for the price, it is pretty small, and the chicken is nothing to shout about.

Changing with the times Smile Jul 07, 2013

Categories : French | Bakery | Burgers and Sandwiches

I remembered Delifrance as one of the hype cafes we go to for expensive coffee and fanciful pastries about 20 years ago– a little like the sprouting of chi-chi coffeeshops these days. Along the years with other cafes coming up with all day breakfast, weekday brunches and latte art, delifrance lost a little of its edge and even looks a little old-school these days. Well obviously, they have done some re-branding, playing up the ‘french’ factor, and recently even created a sandwich in collaboration with a Michelin 1 star chef. (Oyster sauce with mayo, anyone?)

In any case, my bf recently tried done of their sandwiches and loved it as it reminded him of those in France. So here we go for our sunday late lunch.

I had the BBQ chicken sandwich, which was the only one on their hot sandwich menus as the others were cold sandwiches. It was quite weird coz when it came it looks a little like a chicken stew stuffed into a sandwich. Taste was overwhelmed with BBQ sauce, and no greens in sight at all. But it wasnt so bad. You can also opt for the combo which came with soup and coffee. We had the Onion soup and Mushrooms soup, which was really not too bad. Mushroom soup was the rustic type which i loved and quite chockful of mushroom bits.

My bf has the le Parisien– which had nice grilled chicken chunks, but had a very tropical taste. They had pineapple in it, and a sauce which tasted quite citrusy. Seriously, there aint much to complain about the food, price and atmosphere but somehow the taste mix of their sandwich is just not right.

Hidden in Harbourfront centre away from the buzzling crowd of Vivocity, it makes a good coffee place for the lazy sunday afternoon.
