Categories : Steamboat/Hot Pot

I have been to this restaurant on multiple occasions . For lunch, instead of steamboat, which you need to cook and it can be quite time-consuming, you can opt for dim sum and ala carte dishes.
As it was a business meeting, we opted for the ala carte and dim sum options.
Here are the meal highlights:
- Soup with Prawn Dumpling (Shui Jiao): soup is rich and the dumpling had minced pork, black fungus and prawns. It was filling.
- Prawn Dumpling (Har Kow): One of the best I have eaten. Its moist inside and ingredients were fresh. Recommended.
- Pork Dumpling (Siew Mai): Best eaten when its served to the table, when its hot!
- Beef Ball: This is a Cantonese dim sum. Minced beef rolled into a ball and steamed. Served with a sauce that reminds me of Worchester sauce. Chewy and nice.
- Steamed Radish with Prawn and Conpoy: this was nice. Radish was soft and the sauce for the dish was tasty.
- Mee Pok with Minced Pork and sliced Brinjal: The noodles were nicely stewed with the minced pork adding flavor to the dish. Try it!
- Molten Lava Bun: Steamed bun with a salted egg yolk and custard bun. Eat it cautiously, as the filling is hot and may scald you when you bite into it.
- Red Bean Paste Dessert: Red bean paste that has been cooked with dry orange peel. It has a nice citrus-sy flavor and I couldn’t stop till I finished the whole bowl.
Good quality dim sum that always hit the mark.
Highly recommended!

We were at the Centrepoint – Orchard Road area and looking for a place to dine for lunch.
We walked past the Cuppage Terrace and came across a ‘1 for 1’ deal for ramen and their set lunches.
We decided to go with the ‘1 for 1’ deal for their set lunches. The set lunches have a total of 8 options:
- Chicken Karaage
- Deep fried Prawns
- Deep fried Prawn and Fried Salmon
- Gyoza
For each of the above, you get a choice of:
- Rice ball wrapped in sweet tofu skin or
- Salmon rice ball with seaweed.
In addition, each set comes with a bowl of ramen. You have a choice of flavours for your ramen soup base: Salt, Soy sauce, Miso or hot Miso. You can also upsize your noodles to medium size for an additional $1 or large for $3.
As there were 4 of us, we ordered 1 each for the sets available, and chose both the rice ball and salmon rice ball, so that we can try both.
Here’s the verdict:
- Chicken Karaage: The chicken pieces were quite large and deep fried to a dark brown. Chicken were juicy.
- Deep fried Prawns: This is of the frozen kind. Nothing much to shout about.
- Deep fried Prawn and Fried Salmon: Prawn as mentioned earlier. The salmon was rather dry for my liking.
- Gyoza: 3 pieces of gyoza. It was ok.
- Rice ball wrapped in sweet tofu skin: The tofu skin was sweet and this is eaten like a sushi.
- Salmon rice ball with seaweed: cooked salmon that has been flaked and mixed into the Japanese rice together with furikake. It is pressed into a mould to ge the triangle shape and a piece of seaweed is placed on the outside. This was delicious and my lunch group loved it. Must try!
- Ramen: Each of us ordered different soup base. I had the miso and it was just salty enough for me. Loved it.
For 4 pax, we spent $45.
Try it!

Set Lunch at Gajalee Smile Dec 10, 2014

Categories : Indian | Seafood

We were looking for a restaurant to done last week and my lunch partner suggested a few places to dine. I picked this restaurant, as it was in town and easy for me to get to my next appointment.
The restaurant is located just outside the Esplanade, at Colors by The Bay
Gajalee means "an informal gathering" in Malvani & Konkani dialect is a Singapore outpost of a chain of seven restaurants, with the remaining six based in Mumbai & Mangalore, India.
The restaurant is popular for seafood, but as this was lunch time, we had to be practical and choose something easy to eat to avoid accidental staining of our business attire if we were to eat seafood.
We chanced upon set lunch options, and we ordered the Mutton Set, which had a mutton chop on bone, Briyani Rice, Mutton Curry, Dahl soup, Onion salad and Plain Naan. It costs $18.
The verdict:
- Mutton chop on bone, Mutton Curry, Dahl soup, onion salad and Plain Naan.
- Briyani Rice: I find the briyani rice a little moist. It was set in a mould. Breaking into the mould, you will find a hard boiled egg, which is cooked in the rice. A pleasant surprise.
- Mutton Curry: This was very tasty and went well with the biryani rice and naan. Nice!
- Dahl Soup: The soup is a small portion, with carrots and sliced French beans. Stir the soup around, which has mashed dahl below to get a better flavour.
- Onion Salad: This is like achar (pickled vegetables). But the onions were a little strong and both my lunch partner and I had half of this left behind at the end of the meal.
- Plain Naan: Naan was round and cut into 4 quarters. I felt the size was a little small and it was more like prata-sized. Eaten together with the mutton curry, it was nice.
I added a Spinach Soup, a creamy spinach soup cooked in vegetable broth. It costs $8. I found the soup a tad salty, and a little watery.
We ended our meal with masala tea ($6). I wished the serving could be more, as the tea cup was barely sufficient for me to enjoy my fill. The restaurant could use a bigger cup or offer a tea pot.
I learnt from the manager that the 3 chefs in the kitchen hails from the restaurant chain in India and have many years of experience. This means that the food served here is of the same quality and taste as those served in the restaurants back in India.
I will come back again with a larger group to try their ala carte menu items and definitely their seafood items.

Excellent Fried Oyster Omelette! Smile Dec 10, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Fujian/Heng Hwa | Hawker Centre

I have been to many stalls selling oyster omelette around Singapore. In my opinion, this is the best oyster omelette that I have had.
The stall owner has been plying his trade for years and the experience shows in the final product – the oyster omelette that you eat!
You can order:
- Oyster Omelette: $4/ $5/ $8
- Oyster and Prawn Omelette – I only knew they had this at my last visit.
The oyster omelette is crispy and the oysters are well fried. Dipped in the chilli sauce,
Unfortunately, the stall owner does not allow you to order more oysters in your dish, even if you are prepared to pay more. The only way is to order the larger portion and thus you get more oyster and omelette!
The stall only opens from 2pm on weekends and 3pm on weekdays. They usually sell out by about 7pm. Go early to avoid disappointment!
Although I loved this dish very much, I always have a word of caution to myself: Eat in moderation!
Highly-Recommended!

I was at the Alexandra Village Hawker Centre on a weekend and I spotted this stall the moment I entered the hawker centre from the carpark.
This stall sells both braised duck items and braised pork items. The braised duck items include duck meat and gizzard. The braised pork items include pork belly, large intestines and more. I also spotted a braised pig’s head at the store front!
I observed that most people ordered the braised duck.
I ordered my own customised set for one, which included braised duck breast meat, 1 piece of tau kwa (beancurd) and gizzard, with a bowl of rice drizzled with braised sauce. It cost me about $6.
I liked what I ate and will recommend this stall to try.
