The Teatime Indulgence ($14.80++) is the best option since it allows you to try a selection of the signature items. The set includes:

1 pc x Praline/Truffle
1 pc x Macaron
1 slice x Chocolate Gateau
1 dollop x Ice Cream/Sorbet
1 pot x Gourmet Tea or any chocolate beverages from the menu

I didn’t fancy the Hazelnut Hot Chocolate with chocolate shavings ($6.80++) which is made with Gianduja and Guanaja 70% Grand Cru. It was too thin and didn’t pack that chocolate punch for me.

It’s a fact that macarons are sweet, sometimes irkily so, and I usually can’t stomach more than 6 at one go, 7 max. But Chef Then’s macarons ($2++ each) make me wanna keep on eating! Passionfruit is filled with tangy-sweet conserve while Butterfly Pea Bloom is very interesting with kaya and pandan almond cream, but it’s the Black Palm Island Salt that makes it impossible to stop at one. Filled with salted egg and almond cream, topped with black palm island salt, this is an ingenious work of art that exemplifies a delicate balance of saltiness and sweetness.

Jewels’ chocolates are the real gems though. Perle Noir ($5++) is a delight with satiny champagne ganache wrapped with crunchy dark chocolate pearls but I like Topaz ($3.50++) even more. If chocolates have a gender, Topaz has to be a male, strong and potent with macallan 12-year-old single malt whiskey and fresh cream coated with a thin layer of milk chocolate.

Made with 85% abinao dark chocolate, the Chocolate Gateau is as rich and moist as Laurent Bernard’s truffle cake but I prefer the latter for its lighter and smoother ganache.

Nice! Smile Jul 31, 2010

Love the homemade ravioli ($23++)! Filled with wild porcini mushrooms and dressed in an incredibly rich and heavy truffle cream sauce.

Lasagne bolognese ($17++): oven-baked and interlaced with bechamel, beef sauce, eggs, basil and mozzarella cheese.

Like the ravioli, portions are not big but just nice enough to have lots of desserts thereafter.

The tiramisu ($10++) scores points for having a thicker layer of ladyfingers relative to mascarpone cheese. Moist and well soaked without being overly creamy.

There’s a 3 course set lunch priced at $12 nett but I’m quite suspicious of its quality since it’s really dirt cheap.

The restaurant is very small so unless you like to dine al fresco (in this sweltering heat??), remember to make a reservation! =)

Value for money Smile Jul 31, 2010

Menu is prix fixe, meaning it’s fixed prices for either a two ($50++)- or a three-course ($60++) meal and it’s the same menu/price for lunch and dinner. Ala carte is available ($18++ for entree/dessert, $40++ for main) but it doesn’t make sense (at least, to me) to order ala carte since the prix fixe menu is definitely more value for money.

When I saw the deep-fried soft boiled egg, I thought of Sage’s Asparagus & Egg immediately. This is not as crispy as Sage’s but still lovely with a runny yolk, giving a luscious coating to the homecured dill & gin gravlax. White truffle oil is sorely lacking but the dollop of mint crème fraîche is more than enough.

Gosh, salmon for starter and main? Guess I’m really on a Omega 3 spree! Had a thick slab of pan-seared salmon fillet leaning on a bed of sous-vide cauliflower, deliciously rare in the middle, with a most interesting shooter of squid ink velouté on the side. The velouté was very deep and briny, so good that I happily smothered the salmon in it. But it got a tad too heavy towards the end, so go easy on it.

After having too much chocolate lately, I wanted something light and mild so the frozen parfait of hazelnut praline and honey, with a pastry “cigarello” of Gianduja and candied orange peel, sounds perfect. I like how nutty this is and the mouthfeel is not too creamy.

Set lunch Smile Jul 31, 2010

The 2 course set lunch is reasonably priced at $28++, 3 course at $34++.

The chef kindly agreed to change the grilled chicken in the mesclun salad to either salmon or tuna for me. I went for the latter but they got the order wrong and gave me salmon instead. If not for my main of salmon, I wouldn’t mind sticking to this!

After the tuna salad, I had another dose of omega-3 from the pan-fried salmon. It was perfectly done just the way I like: medium-done with some pink in the centre and crispy skin with no burnt marks! The roasted new potatoes on the side were a tad dry though.

The tart of the day was pecan tart with basil ice cream. While the former was just average, the latter was very interesting! The taste of basil was distinct and it’s like a creamy sweet pesto that’s light and refreshing.

Lovely cakes Smile Jul 31, 2010

Mango Pie ($6): Baked creme d’amande tart filled with pastry cream, and topped with fresh ripe mango and blueberries.

This has a superbly moist and buttery tart base and is so darn good that I had it on both of my visits. My favourite pie (tart?) at the moment!

Tahiti ($6): Coconut dacquoise filled with passionfruit mousse, and topped with fresh pineapple.

Love this too cuz this is really light and refreshing. I know I shouldn’t do it but I prefer to eat the layer of coconut dacquoise on its own. Otherwise, all I could taste was the strong and tangy flavour of the passionfruit mousse.

Waguri Millefeuille ($6.50): Delicate strands of French chestnut cream carefully piped over a sandwich of crisp, flaky puff pastry and pastry cream, topped with sweetened Japanese chestnuts.

I’m a huge fan of Mont Blanc and all things chestnut so I was very disappointed that this wasn’t available on my first visit. So I came back a couple of days later just to get my hands on this. And wow, this is really good! Love the chef’s interpretation of Mont Blanc and how he puts in such flaky puff pastry to add another texture to the smooth cream and light sponge.
