Expensive Simple Food OK Jan 10, 2013

Categories : Taiwanese | Restaurant | Porridge/Congee | Kids-Friendly

My parents and i decided to try this restaurant after passing by it a few times. It is situated along the main road of upper bukit timah road. The restaurant provides free parking as it is more accessible by car. However, i think there's one busstop a few meters away from the restaurant. It gets pretty dark at night so it may be safer to go with a group of friends as there are some construction works going on nearby.

Upon entering the carpark, one can see the waitress hovering around the door to open the door for us. Once we stepped out of the car, she quickly went to the door to welcome us. I thought that this was a very warm and pleasant feeling! But it dawn on me that they were able to do this as the restaurant was quite empty.. even during dinnertime. shocked
There was quite a large variety of items to choose from, like zi char store but we ate with porridge instead of white rice. Quickly ordered the food as we were quite hungry and the pictures all look very appetizing and delicious!tonguetonguetongue

Like i mentioned previously, the restaurant was pretty empty so you could hear the conversations going on at the next table. They tried to make the place more lively by playing some chinese songs but it kept repeating the same few after awhile.

I guess the place caters to bigger groups as it was quite a big restaurant, and it was kind of situated in the middle of nowhere! haha!

Food!:

First, the porridge - $0.60/ea. came

All the bowls had at least 2 sweet potatoes. Their porridge is cooked with sweet potatoes. Simple and nice.

Next, beancurd in hot wok - $10. The gravy accompanying the tofu adds to the flavor. I used the gravy to boost the flavour of the porridge. tofu is "tie ban dou fu" but in a wok. It has carrots, mushrooms, big slabs of spring onions and an egg at the bottom. Egg was runny (i like this kind) and it soaked up the gravy a little, making it more flavorful. The rest was OK, nothing special.

Eggplant with dried shrimp - $8/12
We ordered the smaller portion. I love the brinjal! Actually, I love all kinds of eggplant, so this one isn't a surprise. This eggplant was not as mushy as others, a little more.. sturdy? lol. LOVE IT! lol

Braised chicken with rice wine in hot wok - $10/15
Finally, they saved the best for the last. This dish was very nice. I could taste the rice wine distinctively. Only qualm is that they gave the boney parts. Lazy me doesn't like to maneuver around the bones to eat the meat. But! i like this dish as it was really fragrant (due to the rice wine?).

Overall, this restaurant is actually quite expensive considering the dishes we ordered. Not sure how they're going to survive as when i was there, only 3 out of the numerous numbers of tables were occupied. I think there are other places that serve similar food at a lower price. However, no harm in trying the chicken! Maybe you may like other dishes too!

Note: Wet tissue ($0.30/ea.) is non-refundable! huffy But there's no service charge, so i guess it balances out somehow.

Recommended Dish(es):  braised chicken w rice wine in hot pot

Spending per head: Approximately $13(Dinner)

Say YES to a healthy lifestyle Smile Jan 10, 2013

Ordered the student meal for $5.50 (they have a few signatures and classics to choose from), includes sandwich, drink, 1 cookie
I chose the chicken breast sandwich, 6 inch.
Honey oat bread, veggies: lettuce, tomato, cucumber, sauce: honey mustard, sweet onion
I like the chicken breast as it isn't very hard and dry. It was kind of juicy and soft as well. This is easier to eat as compared to other favorites (eg. meatball mariana) as it is cleaner and you dont have to wipe your mouth every few bites.
I also chose a white chip macadamia cookie. I love this cookie as it was sweet enough and the nut was nice to chew on once in awhile when you get sick of the softness of the cookie!

Anw, i think they just hired a new staff. Since she's new and couldn't quite handle everything very well, she got a little anxious as more and more customers kept coming in. She forgot to put the 2nd layer of wrap in my sandwich and also forgot to charge my friend for the extra cheese! lol. She also did not ask for our student cards to check whether we were student (we were wearing home clothes!)

Overall, subway will always be one of the healthier alternative for me. Plus, they have the amount of calories stated in the menu so it's easier to calculate calories. I realized chicken breast sandwich has one of the highest amount of calories as compared to the other healthier ones. Wraps has less calories and i think the turkey breast has one of the lowest calories! I will be back to try them!

Recommended Dish(es):  meatball mariana

Spending per head: Approximately $6

Fav Ramen Restaurant Smile Jan 10, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Ramen

Went for dinner at ajisen restaurant as i saw that they were having an anniversary special menu! Seems like the dishes were a tad cheaper.
I like the service that the place provided, very fast! Food was also served quite fast. It might have been pre-cooked but food still tasted really nice.

Ordered the corn salad ($5.90) as appetizer and we asked to separate the roe and mayo.
This turns out to be a wise decision as they seem to give more of each ingredient! (CHEAPO TRICK!)
Later on, we added the remaining corn, cucumber and crabstick to our ramen, making it seem like a veggie ramen! haha!

The spicy ramen was on to the anniversary special menu. Cost $7.90
I think it was quite spicy as they added chilli padi to the soup and left it inside to brew for awhile or sth. SPICY SPICY!
The chef gave generous servings of seaweed and bean sprout! I like that they were not stingy about somethings so cheap in cost!

We also ordered the paiku ramen set, i tried one piece of meat (didn;t really like pork), and felt that it was soft and tender. The pai ku (soft bone) is also v. nutritious. Gives calcium to the eater! Set cost $15.90 and it comes with a side and drink.

I like the ambience that the restaurant provided with the wooden furniture and jap feel to it!
I will definitely be back to try other items on the menu!(:

Bubbletealicious! Smile Jan 10, 2013

One of the last few stores standing after the bubble tea craze!

Had a craving for bubble tea so i bought them with another friend.

Honey Jasmine Green Tea
& Italian Hazelnut milk tea

Asked for less sugar as it'll probably be extremely sweet with the honey added to the green tea. True enough! still v sweet. HAHA!
Didn't feel like eating the flour "bubbles" so opt for the jelly instead. I like to chew on the bits while drinking the milk tea. Hazelnut added to the bubble tea was a good mix! Love it.

Recommended Dish(es):  hazelnut milk tea

taiwan food OK Jan 10, 2013

This restaurant was tucked along the chain of restaurants at the 2nd floor. It is pretty obvious with the bright red lanterns hanging outside the store. I went in for dinner to try out the food!

Menu:

Few items were unavailable. Service was pretty good as there were enough staffs running around.

Sweet potato fries - $5.90
Sweet potato was really nice and was fried nicely.

Braised Meat Pork Rice - $8
My friend ordered this (i don't like the taste of pork). She said it's really oily (expected from the thick slab of fats between the layers of meat) I think it was pretty good as evident from her comments.

Chicken Chop Rice - $10
Thick cuts of chicken meat! and it was fried to perfection!

Mango ice
Not worth it as it's just one whole big chunk of ice at the bottom and topped with mango syrup.

Note: They'll keep asking you to pay once they finish serving all the main dishes. We insisted on paying after we finish and was called to pay 3-4 times by different people. Inflexible much.
I think there were some hits and misses here! will try other dishes in the near future.
