i love porridge! Cry Jan 08, 2013

-.-

-.-

The store sells a variety of porridge but it's main selling items are noodle-based (eg. ban main, laksa, etc.). I didn't feel that hungry so i tried the peanut porridge, it was the value meal for ntuc union cardholders.
Pretty normal porridge, a little watery but it had a generous serving of peanuts (seeing as how the can of peanut is so cheap! if they give really little, a bit stingy huh!). There's also a few you tiao pieces in it and topped with spring onion. It wasn't extremely crunchy as i think it has been exposed for quite sometime. Since i was lazy to chew (haha, porridge = sick person food!) and wanted to just swallow every spoonful of porridge without chewing, i didn't really had any complains about the blandness of the porridge.

So-so dish, won't really recommend it unless you're not up for the more flavoured food in foodfare. I would recommend the brown rice porridge from the opposite store instead.

fresh fish

fresh fish

I ordered the fresh fish soup.
The fish is very fresh and there are more than normal amount of fish slices given. Generous and friendly storekeeper! I asked for more vege and she happily obliged (good customer service!) The soup is however, a little disappointing as there's hardly any flavour in it; felt like i was drinking water mixed with pepper.

Not a very satisfying dish but it's nontheless, a healthy alternative!

This yongtaufoo store is similar to many other stores in singapore. What makes it different is that ntuc cardholders gets to enjoy the food at a cheaper price! ($0.30 cheaper). If one orders 6 items, it's usually $3, but ntuc cardholders pay only $2.70!

I like the wide array of vegetables the store boosts! They even sell those items with fish paste in it, and most of it is handmade as i saw the storeowner stuffing the fish paste into some items (eg. bittergourd, brinjal, tofu with fish paste on it, etc.) infront of the store, means it's quite fresh! Furthermore, the restock rate is quite fast as the yongtaufoo store seems to be one of the store with queue during peak hour! I like the soup as i can taste the yellow beans very well. The vege are also very fresh without any yellow-y parts. Although i avoided the fried stuff this time round,
the store also gives a separate bowl for the fried items so it doesnt get soggy if it's dipped into the soup!

One minus point about this store is that one of the employees doesnt seem to be very hygienic. There was a fly flying around the items and when i told him, he just shrug it off and ignored it, allowing the fly to continue landing on some items. EEW. I hope he isnt always like that and luckily, there's other employees around who may are more hygienic than him.

Overall, the fuss-free and relaxed environment, with it's clean and white-washed walls makes one feel right at home there! There also seems to always be a few old folks chatting away at an adjacent table, very hawker-centre-ish but it adds to the liveliness of the place!

Brown Rice Porridge!
yummy!

yummy!

bowl

Simple and healthy! Perfect for the health-conscious!
Shared this bowl of porridge with my sister as we felt like being healthy that day! It cost only $2.50 for the huge bowl of porridge. It has mushrooms and carrots in it. The store aunty was very nice too, striking up a conversation about how youngsters these day hardly eat brown rice.. Hmm. I beg to differ!

It is quite filling as it was a big portion. They seem to cook only one big pot of porridge and sells till it finishes; not cooking a new pot anymore since i hardly/dont see it at the later part of the day.

I love how it's plain but really delicious!

The eating environment was also very nice, you can see a mixture of people eating at the food court. It was also a very clean place as the cleaners were very efficient, clearing up within seconds once someone leaves.

Plain Vanilla Bakery is a cute little hidden shop located at the 2nd storey of the shophouses along holland village. Although it has a small interior, it is usually packed with people with a sweet tooth or cupcake cravings!
Cupcake Box Packaging

The cupcakes are priced at $3.50/ea. & $19 for 6! More or less the market price for a cupcake. The flavours available each day varies so you may want to give them a call/check their FB page before going down to check whether your favourite flavour is available!

Flavours that i bought: Carrot(cake), Milk Chocolate Banana, Cookies and Cream, Dark Chocolate Ganache, Chocolate Hazelnut, and Red Velvet
Carrot(cake)

Carrot(cake)

Bite-sized american carrot cake! I like how it tasted exactly like an american carrot cake, the icing was a tad too sweet for this cupcake, but overall, i like how it's moist and.. fluffy! Haha!
Milk Chocolate Banana

Milk Chocolate Banana

This cupcake would be perfect for those who are a little health conscious! Cheat by telling yourself that there's a little banana at the side to indulge in this guilty pleasure! tongue I love how the icing on this cupcake was consistent and matched the banana nicely.
Cookies and Cream

Cookies and Cream

One of my all time favourite flavor! Pure perfection.
Dark Chocolate Ganache

Dark Chocolate Ganache

I didn't let this one although it seemed to be quite a unique flavour. Actually, I dont really like dark chocolate to start with, so a little bias here. However, dark chocolate lovers would definitely love this one as it is authentic-ly bitter enough!
Chocolate Hazelnut

Chocolate Hazelnut

This one was okay for me, no WOW! punch for me.

& saving the best for the last!
Red Velvet

Red Velvet

This flavour is a MUST TRY! for a cupcake and i think plain vanilla delivered this very nicely. Sweet and light, just like how the store promises! Plain o' cupcake that satisfies all cravings!
