We ordered the shabu set which was a mix platter of vegetables, tofu and meat, all of us chose the 'premium Japanese wagyu shabu2 set' at first. Then the service staff recommended the pork belly set for variety, she said that it was a popular item on the menu. I was reluctant at first because normally when we have pork in shabu2, it would either taste bland or leaves a porky scent in the palate. However, we decided to give it a try, because there were 7 of us, so even if it was bad, its unlikely to cause wastage.....
There were 7 different broths to try, we had the goma broth which cost an additional $5. They used charcoal for the shabu2, not the usual gas or induction pot. The wagyu was well marbled and a few swishing movements in the soup cooks it easily. I had the ponzu dip, mixed with scallions, daikon and garlic....cut chilli was also available upon request... the wagyu was the same high quality we had expected because their grill restaurant downstairs serves one of the best wagyu in town. I was satisfied with the broth which I initially thought would overplay the quality meats. The broth was tasty and sweet but it was not overpowering. It is the right taste level, to effectively complement the meat. Finally, The pork belly had the right amount of fat, was finely sliced, and cooked as easily as the wagyu. It didn't cause streaks to get in between the teeth! The best thing was, it didn't leave any unpleasant scent. It was the first time I had pork shabu2 that was so satisfying, what more this was pork belly!..definitely would recommend the pork belly to friends!
Overall we were very satisfied with the food here, the meat was tender and fresh, (even my parents who wore dentures can eat heaps) the soup was flavourful and wholesome, ...after all the meats n veg were finished, we ordered some udon to eat with the soup....and this was the kids' favourite part.....making the slurping sounds whilst finishing up the noodles.
This is truly a restaurant for the whole family!
