Zi Char Smile Aug 02, 2013

I walked past this zi char place previously and salted egg squid on the menu caught my eye, so I suggested this place for dinner. As a fan of salted egg squid, this one's pretty alright, although not the best I've tried - the salted egg sauce is rich and thick, and slightly sweet (which I didn't quite like); at $12 a plate, it's quite worth a try. I also tried the cereal chicken - which is basically pieces of chicken cooked with crispy cereal - pretty good and unique and I love the huge load of cereal given. But i wouldn't order both dishes together again though, it gets quite jelat after a while as both dishes are very flavourful. Perhaps could try their beancurd dishes.

Spending per head: Approximately $16(Dinner)

Tau Sar Piah Smile Jul 31, 2013

Apart from traditional savoury and sweet tau sar piahs, there is yuan yang flavour (pork floss with salted egg), assorted nuts lotus, melon seed red bean, teo chew yam and cranberry flavoured tau sar piahs, all priced at $1.60 each. The staff recommended me to get a box of 8 at $10.80, which is cheaper. My mum likes the traditional ones, but I decided to try other flavours; I like the melon seed and lotus ones, not too sweet or oily, and the paste is very smooth.

I visited Genki Sushi again as my friend heard of the novel way they serve food and wanted to try. You order via a mini iPad, and when your food is ready, it is served by a toy bullet train, very cute and interesting; ought to dine there once even if not for the food. The sushi was good as well. Mostly priced at $2.30 (try the seared salmon or shrimp with pollock roe, very good), and some at $3.80 (hotate scallops). I ended off the meal with Yuzu sorbet that costs $3.80, pretty good but portion a little small, not too sweet as well.

Cheap and good Smile Jul 31, 2013

Saveur offers affordable French cuisine in a causal setting. The wait can be quite long during dinner or lunch times. The angel hair pasta was quite popular and I found it quite nice, having been tossed in olive oil and added mini shrimps. It is also reasonably priced at $3.90. The duck leg confit with mashed potatoes, sautéed mushrooms and orange ($10.90) was also pretty good with a crispy exterior and tender meat.

Set Lunch Smile Jul 31, 2013

Restaurant Ember is well known for its set lunches for the quality and value for money. At around $39.40, there is a wide variety of choices for a 3 course lunch. The Deep-fried Soft Shell Crab with Sweet Wasabi Aioli was good since the sweet wasabi aioli went down well with the well fried soft shell crab that was not overly oily; and the wasabi didn't have a strong pungent taste. The foie gras with mirin, shoyu and shiitake was also excellent because the sauce went really well with the shiitake mushrooms. The foie gras was creamy and melts in your mouth.
