Ramen Set OK Oct 04, 2013
Categories : Japanese | Ramen

We queued for about 30 minutes or so for a table during peak dinner hours; seating is limited and the place is a little stuffy. I had the shio ramen with salmon roe rice and tamago set - soup was a little too salty but the ramen springy; liked the rice as the roe adds flavour to it, and the salmon bits are sufficient. My friend had the miso ramen with tonkatsu and chawanmushi - miso taste was strong and more distinct than the shio soup base. The tonkatsu was rather oily but well breaded. Overall quite average and not worth a queue more than 30 minutes.

Spending per head: Approximately $26(Dinner)

Teochew Porridge OK Oct 03, 2013

This teochew porridge place is within 5-10mins walk from Kovan mrt station. I've tried alishan teochew porridge which is located near Heng Long, and both are comparable, although alishan has better fish. Avoid the mini squid, and go for the bigger sliced ones, as the mini squid is tasteless and hard to swallow. The otah was alright. The fish was fresh as well, and the gravy a little spicy and sour. Silver fish was too salty.

Fish Soup Smile Oct 03, 2013

We made a special trip here as my mum loves fish soup and we saw a very long queue the other day. We queued for nearly 20 mins during peak lunch hours. I had the fish soup with milk and a bowl of rice. It is indeed worth the queue, as the soup is very tasty and flavourful without being overly salty. Loved the spinach they added instead of the usual cai xin you get at other places. Fish was also fresh.

Spending per head: Approximately $5(Lunch)

Apple Strudel OK Oct 03, 2013

My mum bought home an apple strudel for me. I think Ritz Apple Strudel is quite a long establishment, and have many other outlets around. They also have durian strudel, eclairs, cream puffs, etc. Their apple strudel is pretty average - crust was flaky, and the sweetened apple bits within weren't overly sweet. There also isn't too much cream. However, Renaldo's Apple Strudel at Eastwood is still the best.

Zi Char Smile Oct 03, 2013

This zi char place near my place is quite popular and serves better and average dishes. These 3 dishes are all recommended. As they have salted egg crab, I requested for salted egg squid which isn't on their menu, and got it - one of the better ones around, their salted egg gravy was quite well done. I also got their homemade tofu and I especially liked the crispy toppings. Lastly, the veg with dried shrimps was also good.
