Japanese Pasta?! Smile Apr 15, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Café | Desserts and Cakes | Ramen

Since the new wing of Plaza Singapura opened late last year, I've been hearing a lot of good things about the new eating places available and decided to check out Hoshino Coffee with a good friend for a catch-up session before school started.

Although it specialises in coffee and souffle pancakes, we were both feeling peckish and decided to try the Lobster Bisque Soup Spaghetti, which was highly recommended by friends. And when it arrived, it was quite obvious why! Not only was the serving incredibly generous (for about $16 including GST and service charge), it came with large prawns and also lots of cheese sprinkled on the top, just how I like my pasta. Of course, I was apprehensive at first, since I've never tried Japanese pasta before (Isn't pasta italian food?!) but upon eating this, I have to say, the Japanese know their stuff ;)

The pasta was al dente and had just the right bite to it. Although I couldn't really taste lobster in the sauce, and found it a little strange that they added prawns to a lobster dish (seafood is not interchangeable!), it still tasted really delicious with the right amount of umami that the Japanese seem to always be able to deliver!

I would highly recommend this dish to pasta and prawn lovers, and the ambience was lovely for a nice lunch with a great pal! Although the dish is a little pricey at $16, the portion is generous enough for 2 small eaters to share, or just to order to share around with a group of friends.

Taiyaki - Red bean in a fish?!  OK Apr 15, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Japanese

Whenever I'm feeling peckish in town, I like to head down to the food basement in Ion because it has such a wide variety of good food to choose from. In fact, I've become so attached to a particular Japanese snack that I even get my family to buy it home for me if they go down to Town. And this snack is no other than the fish-shaped cake - Taiyaki!

Of course, the stall is more popular for its Takoyaki balls than the Taiyaki cakes but that's a review for another day. They offer freshly made Taiyaki in a variety of flavours but being a traditionalist, I tend to opt for the red bean filled Taiyaki. That said, the banana-filled Chocolate Taiyaki is an innovative and delicious twist for this traditional Japanese snack!

The red bean filling is sweet and generously slathered over the fish-dough and if you're bored, it is fun to watch the staff make the cakes, which of course, looks way easier than it actually is. That said, I've found that the quality of the cake varies each time I buy it. While its obviously best eaten fresh out of the pan, being still warm and crispy, there are times that the dough is still soft and chewy even at the edges, which are supposed to be crispy! So, do keep that in mind and do what I like to call "strategic ordering". I like to stand and observe the staff making the cakes and also, which cakes are already made. It's your best bet to order a flavour that isn't already on the display so that staff will make you a fresh one!

Do try this snack out the next time you're in town and tell me how you like it and which flavours you prefer! Don't forget to order

Best Waffles in Singapore! Smile Apr 15, 2013

Categories : Ice Cream and Gelato

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is what we have all been waiting for. The best place to get your waffle-fix in Singapore is not an all-day brunch cafe, nor is it a specialty waffle shop but instead, an ice cream shop that goes by the unassuming name of Udders.

Yes, I admit, I am addicted to Udder's waffles! It has the fluffiest yet somewhat creamy waffles that I've ever eaten, including all those green waffles offered by heartland bakeries. Not only are they light and chewy, they have a creamy taste that definitely complements whatever ice cream flavour you choose to add on. Of course, cream rather than sorbet flavours are preferable smile

The best part: It only costs $2.90 to add on a waffle to any ice cream! Definitely easy on the wallet since most waffle places charge at least $4 for a plain waffle!

My favourite ice cream flavour to accompany the waffles? Horlicks balls smile

So the next time you're craving for waffles, look no further than Udders Ice Cream! It's a great place to chill out and catch up with the gang, and you can also channel your inner Picasso by doodling on the glass walls at the Serangoon outlet!

Soup by the Sea  Smile Apr 15, 2013

For a healthy post-workout meal, The Soup Spoon has got to be one of the best places for a health-conscious foodie to go!

Not only do all the meals have a calorie-count next to them (so that you can make sure you don't eat more than what you painstakingly worked out previously), the "Make it a meal" options range from sinful (cakes and wraps!) to you guessed it, healthy (fruits and bottled water). This is definitely something that "Subway" needs to improve on, because what is the point have having a healthy sub when you're going to pair it with unhealthy sides of soft drinks and cookies/chips?!

I opted for the Meatless Minestrone soup, which was a generous serving of tomato broth with potato, carrot, celery, macaroni, kidney beans, cabbage, zucchini, leek and basil that made it a healthy yet flavourful dish. It came with a side of whole grain bread to help fill all you carb-lovers out there. Simple yet filling, and at only 194 calories per serving, it definitely hit the spot. ;)

I initially thought that soup wasn't going to be enough for a post-workout meal (Yes, after working the treadmill!) so I opted to make it into a meal. I chose a salad, the Asian Tofu Salad and an apple for sides, and trust me when I say that the asian vinaigrette dressing
is the best I've eaten, in my life. I kid you not, this dressing made the salad so much more palatable (because really, a bunch of leafy greens ain't gonna taste very good) and yet was still light and guilt-free.

Although it was mostly tofu, the other ingredients included mandarin orange, snow pea sprout, carrot, sun flower seeds and the coveted wanton crisps (yum!) and definitely complimented the tofu. In fact, I have to say, there was more tofu than vegetables in the salad so for all your veggie-haters, this is a good option to get your vitamin and fibre fix without much suffering!

The portions was very generous for the price, since I paid around $12 for the entire meal and it was a very satisfying and filling lunch. The only downside would have to be the fact that it was rush-hour and the place was packed with nearby office workers so it wasn't a very conducive atmosphere for a slow lunch with a gym buddy. That said, the view of Sentosa and the sea did make up for it, along with excellent service by the staff.

So if you're in Vivocity and wondering what to eat, definitely check out The Soup Spoon. I daresay I'll be heading back to try the other wraps and soups soon! lol
