Sik Wai Sin Eating House is a restaurant with an attitude. With a no reservations no menu policy, be sure to come early to book a seat as the restaurant tends to get really crowded during lunch time and on weekends.

Situated along Geylang road, Sik Wai Sin had been around for more than 60 years. Now passed on to the second generations, Sik Wai Sin continues to serve delicious home-cook styled Cantonese dishes that many old timers continues to come back for.

Serving only a total of about 8 different dishes a day, the restaurant doesnt provide any physical menu and you'll have to check with the staffs what are available on that day. Ingredients are also limited thus once the ingredients are out for the day, they would stop serving the dish. This is probably one of the reason why the restaurant is more crowded during lunch time - when most of the dishes are still available.
Watercress Pork Ribs Soup ($12)

Cantonese are really well-known for their soups, so soup we must have! Though clear, their Watercress Pork Ribs Soup is packed with flavour and plenty of ingredients. In fact, there are so much pork ribs and watercress that there's not much space for the soup.. which is a pity as the soup is really nice!
Prawns with Tofu ($20)

Prawns with Tofu ($20)

This is probably my favourite dish that I had tried that day! With thick & flavourful gravy that goes really well with rice, and tofu that is oh so soft & yummy~ Definite must have! Highly recommended.
Song Fish Head with Bean Paste ($25)

Song Fish Head with Bean Paste ($25)

This is smaller portion of half Song Fish head, another signature dish of Sik Wai Sin and a really popular dish among fish lovers. I believe they also serve the whole fish head for bigger crowds or you can order that if you really love fish.

The Song fish head is steamed with generous amount of pork lard and bean paste that completely covers the fishy taste and brings out the freshness. Another highly recommended dish!

After visiting this place, I can really see how this place manages to survive & operate for so many years when it seems that their only form of promotion is via word of mouth. Even though their food seems more homely than lavish, this is a place that you will never forget once you have tried it!

Authentic Thai Food Smile Sep 16, 2013
Categories : Thai

My colleague recommended me this newly opened Thai restaurant at ION Orchard, telling me that it's a really popular restaurant chain in Thailand, with this Singapore outlet as their first outlet outside of Thailand! Decided to give this place a try since with the high reputation, the food must be good right?

The first thing I noticed after I stepped into the restaurant is the nice, classy yet cozy ambiance of the restaurant, and the super friendly service staffs!

The restaurant is decorated with Thai traditional looking decors on their walls, with dim lighting and cozy seats. The entire place gave me a really good vibe straight from the beginning!
Hors d'oeuvre Nara ($17.90)

Hors d'oeuvre Nara ($17.90)

I had a Hors d'oeuvre Nara to share with my company and I really liked it! Hors d'oeuvre Nara is mixture of some of their signature starters - a good set to order if you are not sure which to get.

From the set, Tord Mun Pla (Thai fish cakes) & Gai Hor Bai Toei (Pandan Chicken) really impressed me. Tord Mun Pla is chewy with a hint of Tom Yum. It's super flavourful and is my favourite from this platter set! Gai Hor Bai Toei is really good too. Wrapped and deep fried (?) in pandan leaf, the chicken is well marinated and packed with flavours of Thai spices!
Phad Thai with Prawns ($14.90)

This is the first time I've tried Pad Thai and I was rather taken back by it as I thought it would be spicy from looking at the pictures, but it turned out to be quite sweet in taste. The noodles are rather springy in texture and surprisingly addictive. I'm not really used to having sweet noodles but I do like this dish. The prawns are really fresh & juicy too!
Mango Sticky Rice ($9.80) - Large Portion

Mango Sticky Rice ($9.80) - Large Portion

For dessert, we ordered a large portion of Mango Sticky Rice which comes with a generous serving of coconut milk and mango. I'm not a fan of this dish as the glutinous rice and coconut milk are too sweet for me. However I do like how they're generous with their mango which are sweet with a tinge of sourness.

Overall it's an enjoyable meal of authentic Thai delicacies for me with great service to match! The staffs were really attentive and friendly, making us feel really welcomed. Kudos to them!

There's a 10% opening promo going on so if you are thinking of giving this popular Thai restaurant chain a try, now is a good time!

Laksa in many faces Smile Aug 30, 2013

Laksania is a very interesting restaurants which serves Laksa in all sorts of faces. Here they have Singapore Laksa, Kelantan Laksa, Laksa Lasagna among many others!

Kelantan Laksa is not spicy at all with distinctive fine shredded fish meat. It's hard to describe the taste, it's abit like the Laksa we're used to, but not the same at the same time. It confused me. LOL

Sawarak Laksa is definitely different from our usual Singapore Laksa. First of all, the noodles is different. They use the thin bee hoon noodles for this Laksa instead of the thick bee hoon that we are used to, and the soup have a distinct herbal taste to it.

The herbal taste is not the bitter kind and quite acceptable to my palate. I usually dont take any bitter at all. I do think that this dish is nice but it taste nothing like Laksa to me. To me, it's a nice bowl of noodles, but not Laksa.

I also had a cup of Passion fruit soda to complete the meal! Very refreshing soda drink with real Passion fruit & seeds in it! Recommended!

Affordable Lunch @ Orchard Smile Aug 30, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Indonesian

In search of affordable places to have lunch in Orchard, we came to this little cafe like place opposite the somerset MRT station.

This cafe serves Indonesian food at really affordable prices healthy for your wallet. Definitely worth a try if you are around the area.

They also have set lunch specials for a main course + a homemade green tea for less than $6! smile

For my meal, I ordered a bowl of Bee Hoon Bakso and upgraded my drink to a can of Sprite for only $0.20 more! Worth it!

My bowl of Bee Hoon might look plain but that's because I opted out of garnish & vegetables. Although it looks plain, it sure doesnt taste plain. The soup base is quite flavourful and the noodles soaked up the soup well.

The beef balls are also huge and tastes like those you get with beef noodles, but just jumbo sized. Nice!

Ayam Penyet Smile Aug 20, 2013
Categories : Indonesian

Walked past this Ayam Penyet restaurant with my colleague and we decided to give it a try.. And while we looking at the menu, we noticed that there's a 10% discount for employees working in Orchard! Score!

I ordered a signature Ayam Penyet ($7.90)

The tastiness & saltiness of the Ayam Penyet is just nice, but the meat is a tad too dry. Or maybe I was just unlucky as I got the breast meat. The plus point is that there are lots of these fried crispy bits that are super delicious!

Be warned! The chili is super super spicy! It actually burns! They dont seems to serve plain water as well, so try moderately.
