Back for more @ Bali Thai Smile Apr 28, 2014

Return for more Thai food @ Bali Thai. I have tried many Thai restaurant and Bali Thai is definitely one of my favourite ones so far. I have been to their outlet @ Suntec and very impressed with their food. so there i am again, this time round ~ Nex.

We ordered their set meal of 58 dollars for 2 pax which i feel is quite value for money. However, my stomach actually craves for some glass noodles ( tang hoon) so the total bill adds up to about 90++ inclusive of GST and service charge.
The set meal comes with Tom Yam soup, green curry, fried vege, thai fish cake, desert and also sweet and spicy fish.

green curry. not too spicy and too thick for me. the sauce goes very well with rice. chicken meat is very tender and well cooked

sweet and spicy fish. Overall the chili sauce is ok for me except i find the fish is too oil after deep fried.

fried vege. nothing special but just add some greens to your dinner lol.

thai fish cake. their signature. =) love this

tom yam soup. i still prefer those not clear type. generous with ingredients. very light taste but slightly spicy for me

stirred fried glass noodles ( tang hoon) . not in the set meal but we order it seperately. the noodles is so good that u will ask for more.

desert. Mango pudding.somehow i feel the pudding is those off-the shelve type lol.

I am honoured to be invited by Street directory for this food review session. and Many thanks to Vincent from Wan He Lou for recommending to us the yummy dishes from the restaurant.
Wan He Lou is a well known household name for their signature lobster porridge despite they are only open for less than a year ( going to be a year soon). They have built their reputation with many fusion Chinese cuisines and aim to share the joy of enjoying food with you! A cosy set up restaurant that can sit approx 70 - 80 pax including 2 VIP rooms aim to serve you savoury dishes with sincerity. According to Vincent, they serve dishes across all dialect groups and their creative chef will experiment with new dishes from time to time. So fret not, new items are added to the menu to give you a different dining experience.
They also do offer customized menu for your special occasions which is especially good for those who wants to hold corporate events or having special guest. As they are pretty crowded during weekends, reservations are preferred.

so here are some of the highly recommended dishes by Vincent. they are also the most popular dishes among their customers.
Signature Lobster Porridge ~ something not to be missed! 2 pax (approx 350g) from $29.90 onwards

According to Vincent, it is very important to tke the lobster out of the porridge when it is served. The lobster will be overcooked and the meat will be too tough. They only use spiny lobster that is approx 300g each as the lobster meat will not be too tough and the meat will be very sweet and juicy. The preparation of the lobster porridge is broken down in to many stages which the most important one will be preparing the broth for the porridge! My first taste on the porridge is that broth brings a very refreshing and rich. The porridge is cooked in teo chew style which means you can taste the richness of the broth on its own! The lobster is well cooked and not tough. with the fragrant taste of ginger, it not only remove the fishy smell of the lobster, it also enhance the taste as well. Thumbs up for this dish!
Crispy Lotus with salted egg ~ A great snack for beer / TV session!!! (s) $11.90 (m) $19.90

A wonderful snack that is still crispy even when it is cold. According to Vincent, the preparation time for this dish is very long especially for the lotus. The smell of this dish is so overwhelming that you can smell it from a far distance. It is cooked with salted egg ( just like salted egg prawn) , sprinkly with curry leaves. This dish is so addictive that i couldn't stop eating it! Thumbs up for this dish too!
Fresh Vegetable Juice ~ Healthy Refreshing juice for a hot and sunny afternoon! $3.00

i was quite sceptical on how good this drink will be especially when Vincent introduce the ingredients of it. but to my surprise, this drink taste heavenly. the after taste is very refreshing and cooling. It gives a cooling sensation every single sip lol. It is also very appetizing too!
Cod fish with spicy sauce ~ Choose how you want your cod dish to be cooked! (s) $29.90 (m) $46.90

Not many restaurant offers the option of how you want your cod fish to be cooked, seriously. They are either black pepper or steam or deep fried. But here, they provide you the option of how you want it to be! How nice! Personally i love this dish too! the fish is very crispy despite it is covered with sauce. it is extremely fresh and according to Vincent, they only use premium ingredients in all the cuisines! Perfect dish to go with a plain bowl of rice!
Vincent also took this chance to remember two new dishes to us. Salt Pepper San Yao ( also known as huai san) and also Prawn ball with aloe vera and Osmanthus.
Salt Pepper San Yao

Honestly speaking, my mum always cook san yao soup but not deep fried them and this is my first time tasting this dish. This dish is very special as San yao is quite tasteless and you use the salt and pepper to bring out the flavor of this dish. It is very crispy both inside and outside. Personally i quite like this dish too!
Prawn ball with aloe vera and Osmanthus.

The prawns are very fresh and the texture is very good. So you can see that the chef actually control "the fire" very well to ensure that the prawns are not overcooked. However, the sauce may make the prawn loses a little crispiness on the outside (not sure if it is intentional but it is still as good). Also, the fragrant of the osmanthus brings this dish to another level! If you love osmanthus and aloe vera, you will like this dish.

So yummy Smile Mar 26, 2014

Categories : Korean | Army Stew

I have heard much raves about Seoul Yummy and not try it myself yet. Since there are some cravings for Korean food so here i am!
Seoul Yummy
Novena Square 2
#03-68
Tel : 6397 6939
The restaurant offers ala-carte or menu set of korean dishes. They serve Korean army pot, bibimbab and other authentic dishes. Most of the spices and ingredients they used are fly from Korean so to give you the most authentic korean flavour. They also provide the option to create your own meal set or combo based on what you feel like eating that day! The price is quite reasonable and i would say that it is value for money.
they also served the typical small korean dishes which are refillable. i love the potato salad and ikan billis

for our main course, we ordered the famous korean army pot combo that comes with 2 korean roasted barley tea, 1 choice of army stew ( seafood or meat), 2 x multi grains rice ( which u can choose to upgrade it to other dishes), 1 choice of appetiser and 1 choice of dessert. the army comes with the instant noodles, korean rice cake so you will probably be super full after that.
for us, we opt for a upgrade to the korean glass noodles and choose the potato pancake as our appetiser.
the korean army pot, we took the meat one. the soup based is quite strong but a little sweet i feel. overall, is ok for me. the noodles is slightly different from those i had previously. it is slightly thicker and more q. i love the luncheon meat and the fish cake very much!

Potato pancake. not much comments as it just satisfied my cravings for korean pancakes. its a pity that it does not contain any vegetables in it. otherwise this will be perfect

Glass noodles. i never regret top up for this dish. this is simply too good. i love this. not too oily for my liking.

[Food Review] Claypot Delights OK Mar 17, 2014

Categories : Singaporean Chinese | Coffeeshop | Chinese Soup | Claypot Rice

District 19 is one of my favourite hunt now since I have moved to my new place. It is always exciting to find new and yummy food near the place you stay so you need not worry about no good food to eat. I am very honoured to be one of the selected guest to join in Openrice's food tasting session again. This time round, i am not alone, Husiban join in as well to share his food review too.
Lao Wang Claypot Delights
Blk 263 Serangoon Central Drive #01-43
Singapore 550263
Lao Wang Clayport Delights first started their business 20 over years ago in JB. And they decided to venture their business to Singapore 10 yrs ago in Chong Boon AMK Ave 10 coffee shop. They currently have a few branches; one in Yishan sharing the same name call Lao Wang as well and also one in Bishan.

With its new branch in Serangoon, the shop owner vows to sell more variety of food!
so let us see what food they serve here shall we?

Sesame Chicken in claypot. According to the Boss, the chicken is marinated with sesame oil over night so that the chicken gives a very fragrant sesame smell and taste when is cooked. My personal feel is the dish is slightly too oily despite sesame oil is much healthier than normal cooking oil. A little taste of Shao Xing Wine (chinese cooking wine) will definitely enhance the taste! if those glutinous rice wine will be better!

Herbal Frog leg soup. i would say that this is the least favourite for me but Husiban's favourite. I feel the herbs is too bland and couldnt cover the "frog fishy" smell and taste. The soup gives a very fishy after taste. But Husiban feel otherwise, he loves the lingering feel after drinking effect.

Sambal seafood. The seafood is marinated before cooking it. Personally i feel the sotong is overcooked as it has been in the claypot for very long. the fish is quite fresh though. Husiban quite like the dish and took extra servings of it.

Sesame kidney and liver. this dish happens to be one of my least favourite too. I feel that the liver is overcooked and the kidney is not properly clean. so it does have some weird taste. =(

Sambal kangkong. This dish may look simple but is really very good. Cos the sambal chilli is really good! i love this

My Cafe Hopping Journey ~ PS Cafe Smile Feb 18, 2014

Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Café | Desserts and Cakes | Pasta | Steaks and Grills | Pizza | Brunch

Located at a very prominent area at Metro Paragon, this cafe is not hard to miss. They offer a rest and relax corner where you can drink coffee and enjoy a slice of their yummy cake. you can also choose to dine at their cafe.

They offer pasta, pizza and sandwiches. The more famous to be mentioned is their truffle fries.

frankly speaking, this is the best truffle fries i had so far. the fries are very crispy and sprinkle with shredded cheese flakes that adds on a different taste to the fries. The serving is quite huge and is enough to serve 3 pax!

For sandwich lovers, do not forget to give their sandwich a try. The sandwich is freshly made and ingredients used are very fresh too. they do offer a set meal that comes with soup and the serving is huge too! good to serve 2 pax for small eaters like us
