Coffee with a view OK Jun 03, 2013

Categories : Café

Located at Boat Quay, Homebodies is the latest brainchild of the folks behind Smitten Coffee Bar and Henry Congressional. Located at the second floor, it can be easily missed by anyone passing by but Homebodies had make an effort to have these logos painted on the wall to get the attention of people.

Despite the nice place, I did not quite like the cafe latte I ordered. It was too acidic for my liking but this is similar to other places that uses beans from Smitten.

It is a very quiet place that overlooks the CBD area. When I visited, they were merely opened for a week and their menu consists of bun with sausages only. Not too sure if they have added more items to their menu (I sure hope they do!). Those working at the CBD area, now you know where to go for some caffeine fix!

Atas self-service "food court" OK May 30, 2013

If you haven't heard, Dean and Deluca has arrived in SG, for a few months now already in fact. Dean and Deluca is a gourmet store from New York, which sells many many different kind of food ingredients. I was there on a weekday noon and it wasn't too crowded.

Everything is self service in D&D so don't expect people to serve you. I was quite blur what to do when I was there 'cos there wasn't signs to instruct us, nor is there any staff telling us what to do. So if you are planning to head there, please note that you have to 1) get a seat first 2) go to the counter and order your food with your table number 3) pick up beverages yourself at the counter 4) take cutleries and water and condiments yourself. Basically, only food that requires preparation will be served to you.

My Brioche French Toast with caramelized bananas and berries! It's served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream too. I love this a lot! The brioche was crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. The sauce was yummylicious too! But it gets really sick after awhile. I had this alone and only managed to finish half of it, definitely meant for sharing!

I didn't know I had to pick up my own beverage and I only did that after I was done with my meal after being told my the staff there. I think they made a new one for me, which was nice of them.
Overall, I would say D&D is just like a high class food court. Chope your seats and get your food yourself. But the standard of the food was pretty good, so I guess it warrants a second visit. I wanna try their belgium stack next! ;)

Nassim Hill Bakery, Bistro and Bar has been opened for a few months already, so it's not exactly new. But it still seems a little foreign to my friends and foodie lovers on instagram. I guess that's because many would think that Nassim Hill Bakery would be very expensive as it's situated at Nassim Hill (duh..), which is a high end private residential estate in town. But I thought that the prices were pretty affordable!

The bakery seems to be very popular amongst the expatriates. But the place was really spacious and huge, so I didn't have any problem finding a seat.

The Eggs Benedict ($18) had some hits and misses. I really liked the white ciabatta that was used instead of the usual muffins. The bread was crispy on the outside, yet soft inside. The eggs were kinda small and the hollandaise sauce didn't match well with the eggs. Like the egg just tasted like plain poached eggs, without any sauce.

The eggs ben came with a complimentary bread basket which includes 4 kinds of artisan bread, butter and jam. I thought that the bread were really good, though I didn't quite enjoy some of them as there were nuts in it.

Overall, I think their selection of bread was really good. The rest are just passable. But I personally liked the environment there. Really spacious and it's perfect for those who would like some private space while dining alone. Prices are inclusive of GST and there's no service charge. For a place like this situated at Nassim Hill, I think the prices are pretty reasonable.

Cake in a jar Smile May 30, 2013

Grin Affair has got to be one of the first to start the "cake in the jar" trend in Singapore, with many following suit thereafter. Nestled in a small corner in Everton Park, Grin Affair sells cakes in the form of jars. Pretty creative isn't it? Having disappointed the previous time, I went earlier this time round, determined to get some cakes home.

They have many flavours on sale and all looks super tempting! A bottle costs about $5 plus on average, some flavours which are more special costs a bit more. I bought the strawberry custard ($5.50), cookies and cream ($4.80), banofee ($5.50) and dark chocolate ($5.50). Gave 3 to my friends while I kept the dark chocolate one for myself. My friends all loved the cake, except one who tried the cookies and cream one.

I personally liked the dark chocolate one a lot. The jar consists of sponge cake and mousse and a chocolate ball-like thing on top. The cake was really smooth and super nice! Though it's a little costly, I think it's worth a try plus it's not too bad a gift to get for your friend!

Be there early cos they sell out really early on days and you won't want to be disappointed! Grab a cuppa at Nylon Coffee Roasters to complete your day! ;)

Another new establishment that sprung up at the Bugis-Kampong glam area is Symmetry. Nestled right at the end of Jalan Kubor, this place serves some Australian-style brunches and is essentially a cafe in the day and a bar at night.

I have heard some positive reviews about this new brunch place and some have even said that the standard is on par with Wild Honey. I would say that the prices are definitely comparable to Wild Honey, with mains starting from $20 onwards, but the food served are pretty different from what Wild Honey offers.

The mocha was as good as the one I had at Artistry, full-bodied with an intense chocolate-y taste.

For the starters, we had the Prawn Popcorn and the Wild Mushroom Duxelle Beignet. I liked that both were crisp and light, and the ingredients were fresh, but I personally prefer the former as I'm not a fan of mushrooms. But my brunch companions loveeeee the latter and said it was excellent.

The Eggs Benedict here differs slightly from the norm. It consists of some caramelized onions and the hollandaise sauce wasn't thick enough. The poached eggs tasted more like soft-boiled eggs as the egg white was too runny. I felt that I can do a better job for the poached eggs. There's nothing to complain about the hash potato but overall, this dish is not worth the $20.

My dining companion ordered the Arrabiata and she said it was good. I didn't try it but I got to trust her on that.

On the whole, I love this hole-in-the-wall place but it's a bit too cramped for comfort. Food is good but prices are slightly on the high side. It's worth a try but probably not a place I'll frequent.
