The Healthier Alternative Smile Feb 16, 2014

I was feeling particularly peckish on my shopping trips around Bugis Plus and I decided to drop by Berrylite, a frozen yogurt parlor. With bright colors inviting you to the stall, you will be greet by a smiling staff.
Natural Flavour

Natural Flavour

Grab 2 cups and I chose the natural flavor which I love the natural sourness of it. We had Oreo toppings on it and you might think that it is a weird combo, but it is actually really good!

I like that it is smooth and their flavored options don't have an artificial flavor to it. I do wish the prices are a little cheaper though given that the portions aren't really huge.

But if you are looking for a healthier alternative to ice cream, Berrylite is a pretty good choice!

Cozy place with comfort food Smile Feb 14, 2014

Categories : Italian | Pasta | Seafood

Taking up quite a substantial space in Vivocity, the place gives off an extremely comfortable vibe with the red leather couches, wooden seats, cushy armchairs and metal rivet tables. Natural sunlight brighten up the place through the ceiling high glass windows, while metal overhanging orange lamps gave it somewhat of a vintage flair which I like.

I was seated near the the open kitchen where I can see the bustling activities as orders from the lunch crowd stream in demanding for dishes of Italian food fare. Best spot in the restaurant if you are having awkward conversations with your first date, and you can just go “Oh look at how they are plating the spaghetti! “
MEATBALL SPAGHETTI

MEATBALL SPAGHETTI

The tender meatballs were served with a light pink centre and I like the addition of vegetables to the dish, giving it a healthier spin. If there is one thing I would have to pick at, it would be that the handmade spaghetti was a little mushy from being overcooked. Still a generous dish which will be able to fill a grown man up!

SGD 29.90
CAPPUCCINO

CAPPUCCINO

Order a cup of Cappuccino that turned out rather thin, so I would give this a miss.
WILD TRUFFLE RISOTTO

WILD TRUFFLE RISOTTO

In my mind, I was expecting a grayish looking dish cause truffle = mushroom? So naive me was caught by surprise upon seeing the bed of white rice drizzled with truffle oil and scattering of truffle bits around this dish.

The flavors in this dish lightly dance over your senses instead of overpowering it, prevent the dish from being too “jelat”. However I don’t particularly fancy the rice which has a slight bite to it. it gives me a feeling as if it was uncooked. Usual mushy sticky short grain rice for me!

Objectively, it is a recommended dish to order as my colleague did love the entire dishsmile

SGD 16 (small) / SGD 24.50

VERDICT

Despite the small amount of dishes which I tried at the establishment, the great service and food will definitely see me making a second trip. Spending SGD 30 per head, it will probably not be a common weekday lunch stopover, but definitely one for gatherings and celebrations.

Even though I haven’t tried this before, but I have long heard Jool’s Favourite Sicilian Tuna Fusilli; a dish which Jamie Oliver prepared for his wife’s pregnancy cravings. There are many good reviews from my friends around me, it will probably be a dish I would try the next time!

RIZ AU CURRY

RIZ AU CURRY

Probably my favourite dish out of the mix, this dish had me going spoonful after spoonful of the savoury curry drenched rice. I like that there is vegetables added into the mix to kind of give me the hope that I am eating a little healthier.

Definitely generous with the addition of ingredient, a robust great tasting dish that I am pretty sure to have loads of adoring fans like myself

SGD 15.50
RIZ NOIR SQUID INK RICE

RIZ NOIR SQUID INK RICE

I am never really a fan of squid ink because I always feel that it was more for aesthetic purposes rather than taste. However the Riz Noir squid ink rice came with a distinct flavor, which was probably due to the ika sumi powder which the owners have imported all the way from Hokkaido. It also has a fragrant buttery taste which I love.

A recommended dish!

SGD 16.50
SOUFFLE DE NUAGE

SOUFFLE DE NUAGE

The well baked golden brown top promise you a great dish, and it certainly didn’t lie. Break into the puffy foamy souffle and dig into the tomato rice which is deliciously tangy sour. I love how the rice wasn’t all mushy and soft from over-baking, giving the entire dish a great balance in texture.

SGD 15.50
MIAM MIAM SPAGHETTI

MIAM MIAM SPAGHETTI

Exactly 110g of spaghetti to be cooked for exactly 7.5 minutes. The Miam Miam spaghetti has a strict set of steps in order to achieve its signature texture. Mixed in with their secret sauce recipe, it was a light tasting dish which I grew to appreciate. It is really good when you break the egg york and mix everything up!

I didn’t particularly like the texture of the spaghetti, finding it a little too hard. But to each of their own, there were others who love it and found it to be just right. Definitely a generous dish, for the ladies, you might have to share!

SGD 15.80
CHOCOLATE MOLLEAUX

CHOCOLATE MOLLEAUX

Looking devilishly yummy with the promise of a molten chocolate centre, this dessert disappoint us when the center turn out not so runny after all. A tad on the sweet side, I did prefer a little more bitterness to the chocolate since it is matched with a vanilla soft serve.

SGD 9.80
APPLE AND GRANOLA PANCAKE

APPLE AND GRANOLA PANCAKE

The pancake turn out a little harder than I would have like, but perhaps the frantic snapping of food porn have cooled it a little too much. With the yummy cinnamon and granny smith coated toppings, this is a dessert which can fill you up if you aren’t a big fan of mains.

SGD 12.80
VALRHONA CHOCOLATE SOUFFLE

VALRHONA CHOCOLATE SOUFFLE

MATCHA SOUFFLE

MATCHA SOUFFLE

Both souffles turn out perfect with puffed up tops which will be sure to make you salivate at sight! The flavors were subtle with a pretty distinct eggy flavour, coming across as a light tasting dessert. Definitely a choice which many will enjoy, but you are one who heavy handed when it comes to flavors, you might be slightly disappointed.

SGD 13.80 / SGD 10.80

VERDICT

Definitely a place which I would be back, I am already planning to head there again with my other foodie friends! The mains to me are the star attraction at Miam Miam with their robust flavors and perfect play of textures. Desserts could be a little better, but it is no less enjoyable digging into it.

With such a cosy environment and pocket friendly prices, I am sure you will find yourself a fan of this place like I didsmile

Mitsuba by Yurine Japanese Restaurant is the 3rd restaurant started by Chef Peter, a well known grumpy chef of the famed Chikuwa Tei and Wasabi Tei. There have been a loyal following of customers who have sworn their soul to his famous Chirashi Bento. I didnt get to try it this time, so maybe the next!

Check out the Sashimi!

I think I died and went to heaven, the moment I shove the first mouthful of minced tuna into my mouth. Damn blardy good. Just look at how thick and juicy each piece of sashimi was!

I really really enjoyed every single item I tried here in Mitsuba by Yurine Japanese Restaurant. The sashimi was fresh, thick, juicy and generous. The rice is also worth a special mention cause it is so fluffy and sweet and deliciously mixed with the Japanese vinegar, I am having a hard time resisting it!

Prices are at SGD20++ for a bowl of salmon don, ,but trust me. You will be darn willingly to pay that price for this bowl of heaven on earth

Complimentary Side Dishes

Love the refillable side dishes that comes before the start of each meal. I particularly love the beancurd and kimchi there!
Seafood Pancake

Seafood Pancake

I think among all the Korean restaurants that I had been to, this is one of the better Korean pancake which I have taken. Flavorsome and packed with kimchi, it is pan fried till a crispy layer is formed on the outside and yet still remind chewy on the inside.
Soup

Soup

I have heard of the soups at Joo Mak to be flavorsome and we ordered one of them to find this rumor true!

It is definitely a thumbs up for the dishes! I didn’t manage to try more of the dishes at Joo Mak, but I will definitely keep adding more dishes once I have visited this place a few more times!
