Cupcakes can be better OK Mar 29, 2014

Opened since April last year, TenEleven Cupcakes is a small takeaway kiosk with a small counter that can seat 2 people that is located at the basement of Far East Plaza.

Order the Banana cupcake ($3.50) if you like bananas as the batter for the cupcake is made of bananas, topped with banana cream and a slice of banana. I felt this is rather ordinary and tasted normal.

The Chocolate Peanut Butter ($3.80) cupcake fares better than the Banana (a personal preference) as this tasted more rich than the latter. The chocolate cupcake slightly lacks in flavour, but is quickly replenished for by the toppings of peanut cream, chocolate cream and bits of peanuts, making the whole cupcake taste rich and sweet.

If you are looking for a sweet bite near the Orchard area, look for this hidden spot!

Great fried chicken! Smile Mar 25, 2014

I

Ever since Filipino fast-food chain Jollibee (which specializes in their fried chicken) opened their first outlet in Singapore at Lucky Plaza, crowd here has never failed to get shorter, with queues stretching over to the neighbouring units. However, the queue clears off fast as well, though be prepared to wait at least 15 minutes to make your order.

The 2-piece Chickenjoy with Rice and Drink ($6.60, +$0.20 to up-size drink) is the signature dish of the place. It’s not hard to see why. The chicken is crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside. As such, oiliness of the fried chicken is kept to the minimum. The rice and chicken is best mixed and dipped into the gravy provided, which tasted similar to the chicken gravy used in KFC’s Whipped Potato.

If you do not want rice, the 1-piece Chickenjoy with Spaghetti and Drink ($6.60, +$0.20 to up-size drink) is an alternative. This meal was topped up with additional fries ($1.50). The spaghetti is sweet and is full on tomato taste. The fries are crisp but is certainly not one of their highlights.

Definitey one of the better fried chicken joints around the Orchard area. Don’t let the queues repel you from going!

Perfect enclosure Smile Mar 23, 2014

Categories : Café

The new place to hit the Farrer Park / Pek Kio / Jalan Besar scene is recently opened Wood Shed who specializes in coffee and cakes currently.

The drinks menu is rather simple.

The Flat White ($5.50) is made from a blend sourced from a local roaster. It tasted strong and is full-bodied. There is a slight bitter taste on the last drop however.

The cakes selection are sourced from Cakes Literally, which is just a few street away. The Red Velvet cake ($6) is firm and not crumbly. The amount of cream cheese added in each layer felt just right as well.

Come April, they will be selling mains in their menu. If you are around the Pek Kio area, this is a great addition to the late night brunch spots to visit by then!

For the full review and photos, please visit http://makanarts.com/2014/03/22/hatter-street-bakehouse-cafe-block-212-hougang-st-21/

Opened few months back ago is Hatter Street, which specializes in their cakes, bakes and waffles. The owner, Yvette Chua, graduated from the Culinary Institute of America. She taught Home Economics in Cedar Girls' Secondary School and worked at three Michelin-star restaurant Bo Innovation in Hong Kong for four months before becoming the pastry chef of D'Zerts Cafe.

The menu as imprinted on the wall. Rather simple.

The Whoaffles with Pandan Ice Cream sprinkled with Gula Melaka ($8.80) deserves to be commended. It is crisp on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. Coupled with the pandan ice cream which is hardly found elsewhere and the Gula Melaka, it gives the waffles a local touch to its taste, while tasting sweet and coconut-ish.

This place is a great spot to satisfy your sweet tooth if you are around Kovan / Lorong Ah Soo / Hougang area.

The passion of several entrepreneurs, who has worked in various sectors including F&B, advertising, hotels and even in fitness lead to the formation of an industrial-chic cafe called My Awesome Cafe. Most of them, including the owner Franck Hardy, has brought their expertise in working in restaurants, cafés and hotels over (and yes some even worked in Michelin-star restaurants / cafés before!).

Located below the creative agency Mangham Gaxiola, it occupies the what previously is Chung Hwa Free Clinic and specializes in all-day breakfast, salads, sandwiches, coffees, teas, beers and liquor. They are also the only place in Singapore to sell Mexican Coca-Cola for the long term (read: Coca-Cola with Cane Sugar! The first being Omakase Burger but was only available for a limited time)

The food menu

And the drinks menu! (look at the Mexican Coca-Cola while you’re at it!)

The Croissant with Scrambled Eggs and Smoked Salmon ($8++) is easily one of the better tasting breakfast food out there. The croissant is filled with strips of cheese and the smoked salmon, which was smoked to the right texture and taste. The scrambled eggs, however, tasted slightly more like an omelette instead but still maintains its moist texture.

The coffee served here are blends made from Columbian, Brazilian and Sumatran beans. The Latte ($4.50++) is full bodied and maintains the strong taste of the roasting process. Anyone who does not like bitterness may not like this even as the right amount of milk is added into the coffee.

In overall, this place will surely attract the crowds with their passion and patriotism to the food and service served here. If you are around the CBD / Tanjong Pagar / Telok Ayer area, why not pop by this place? I know I would, and will try the Mexican Coca-Cola the next time round!
