Laid-back cafe experience OK Dec 31, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : American | Café | Hotel | Vegetarian | Burgers and Sandwiches

Cali Cafe is a Californian-styled cafe tucked snugly within Park Avenue Hotel. It provides a classic cafe atmosphere, complete with plushy seats and soft lighting and music - perfect for settling down with a book in hand in rainy weather.

They have an impressive range of burgers, pastas, pizzas and other typical cafe bites to go along with their coffees and other beverages. They even have an in-house ice cream dessert cafe serving up Häagen-Dazs ice cream and Belgian Waffles. Sounds like a perfect, complete cafe experience, no?

Despite being a cafe, the main I had, the In Coming Burger with Cheese, was indeed worthy of repeat visits. It was a classic American-style beef burger, with a thick and juicy beef patty, cheddar, lettuce and tomatoes sandwiched between two soft and fluffy buns. Fries, orange wedges and mesclun leaves completed the dish.

My biggest complaint would be directed at the fries, which were way too salty. I would certainly ask them to hold the salt on future visits. Apart from that, the burger itself was hearty and satisfyingly beefy. Nothing really special, just a standard, timeless beef burger. It was, however, done really nicely, with the patty moist and tender, oozing juices with every bite. The cheddar complemented the patty well, adding a chewy, mildy salty tang to it. Together with the fries and salad, this dish filled me up really well, and I left a happy and satisfied patron.

The highlight at COMNAM Broken Rice is of course the Southern Vietnamese broken rice dish (Cơm tấm), which is accompanied by a variety of meats and vegetables of your choice.

Our group of four had two sets each of the Sauteed Lemongrass Pork Slices and Four Treasures. The former consists of pork ribs, chicken ham, fried egg and pickles accompanying the signature broken rice, while the latter features shrimp spring roll, shrimp moneybags, sugercane coconut-shrimp stick and grilled pork ball stick along with steamed egg and fungus.

The dishes we had were simple, yet hearty and satisfying. We felt like we were tucking into good old peasant food - simple and honest but delicious and filling. In particular, the BBQ pork ribs were tender and coated lightly with a sweet and savoury marinade. The slices of chicken ham were not too salty. The shrimp moneybags and pork balls were both plump and juicy, and filled out well with savoury ingredients.

For a simple yet delectable broken rice experience, there is no better place in Singapore to visit than COMNAM.

Best of three worlds OK Dec 31, 2014

Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Restaurant | Vegetarian | Chinese Soup | Western Soup | Halal

The Soup Spoon Union brings together the best of The Soup Soon, The Handburger and Soup Broth Asia Noodle Bar in a single, integrated menu.

The signature item on this menu would be the Union Sampler, which allows the diner to, indeed, sample the best of what the three brands have to offer, in bite-sized portions of each dish. To accompany a Caesar Salad, choose two from a range of noodles, pot pies and sliders. The variety is indeed unbeatable, and you can customize your meal based on your mood. We chose the Kimchi Beef Ramen and Boston Clam Chowder Pot Pie, and both were satisfactory, even if not superb. I guess the highlight of dining here is the variety of items on offer, rather than the quality of the food itself.

We also had a Chicken Cajun Cordon Bleu burger from the Handburger section, and a side of Lamb & Pork Sausage Meatballs added on for SGD 4 to the Union Sampler.

The Cordon Bleu burger was immense and wholly satisfying, with a thick slab of stuffed chicken topped with what I believe to be a huge portobello mushroom. Lip-smacking goodness defined. The meatballs fared poorer though, as they were relatively small in portion and lacked flavour. The accompanying gravy was rich and creamy though.

Healthy, hearty salads and wraps Smile Dec 31, 2014

Simply Wrapps does in fact offer more than simply wraps. I had one of their salads previously and was impressed by the freshness of the ingredients and the immensely wide variety available. Apart from wraps and salads, Simply Wrapps also carries a range of beverages and light bites.

This time however, I zoomed in on their specialty - wraps. You may choose from a range of pre-set combinations, or opt to create your own wrap. I customized my wrap based on the outline provided by the Mexicana Fiesta, replacing jalapenos with pumpkin. The result was oh-so-good, if I may unabashedly praise my creation.

Much of the credit for my delicious wrap has to go to Simply Wrapps themselves though. As always, the ingredients were fresh and crisp. The bright and cheery colours did wonders for my mood too! Their generosity with the fillings resulted in a thick, juicy and filling wrap that was satisfying and healthy at the same time.

Simply Wrapps never fails to delight me with the freshness and variety of their ingredients. If you are looking for a quick hearty and wholesome bite, do check them out!

Hearty kebabs Smile Dec 30, 2014
Categories : Middle Eastern/Mediterranean

QBAB specializes in handcrafted kebabs which combine "traditional meat recipes" with "bespoke sauces", and based on my experience, it does that quite successfully.

My customized kebab was fat and thick, enticing me to sink my teeth into its luscious goodness. Visually, the morsels of chicken appeared so juicy and welcoming.

After the customary shots, I plunged right in. The chicken was indeed as good as it looked, perhaps even better. It was succulent and so moist and tender. The fillings included cucumbers, carrots and cheese amongst others, and complemented the smoky chicken really well, balancing out its deep, savoury fragrance.

Quantity wise, I was satisfied too. The kebab was large and indeed filling. For a quick, well-balanced and hearty kebab fix, check out QBAB at Raffles City Shopping Centre!
