Jumping on the bandwagon of steamboat and Japanese buffet restaurants is Shabu Sai – a Japanese steamboat buffet restaurant (pardon the repetition of words). With a total of 7 soup bases, the diversity is great as long as it doesn’t leave you and your friends bickering over which to choose. Thank goodness, you’re entitled to 2 soup choices per pot!

Trays of Sliced Beef, Pork and Chicken with unlimited servings! These trays of meat are delivered to the table only upon requests to maintain high hygiene standards and freshness. As you can see, the meats were so thinly-sliced that they were translucent – perfect for shabu-shabu. I especially enjoyed the pork and beef which were very tender and not even tough when left forgotten in the pot. Meat lovers will definitely enjoy them!

Togi is one of the more popular Korean restaurants in Singapore, with their original shop at Mosque Street. With their second one at Triple One Somerset, a much more convenient location, I finally headed down to try out their authentic Korean fare. The restaurant has a modern vibe to it with traditional wooden-sandpaper partitions separating tables for more privacy. Its overhanging and wall-framed greens diverted from the usual steel smoke collectors found in most Korean BBQ restaurant. Diners will be glad to know that all BBQ-ing of meats are done for you in the kitchen and for once, you won’t have to leave the restaurant smelling of what you ate.

I chanced upon The Providore while hunting for desserts after my meal at Fukuichi. The decor was so chic and modern that it was hard to resist stepping inside. The whole cafe reminded me of Jones the Grocer, just 2 levels up, with its colourful tea sets and accompanying tea leaves stored in colour-clad metal tins. After a round of satisfying desserts and drinks, I aimed to come back to try the mains.

I’ve read Sarah’s blog in the past and drooled over all her wonderful cakes and pastries from behind my laptop screen. For my birthday last year, I tried getting a cake from her but to no avail (yes, she’s very popular). The good news is, she has opened up her very own bakery shop near me! Just 2 months old, Maple & Market has gained lots of great reviews and shot to fame overnight. The old, monotonous neighbourhood is suddenly injected with youthful vibes and lots of sugar. Indeed, the cafe is everything I wanted of if I ever opened one of my own (but nah, I don’t bake).

Maple & Market offers very affordable pastries and all of them look too good to be missed. Though not all cakes may please my tastebuds, the charm and allure of this little cafe really draws me to come back here again.

A must-try for brunch lovers! Smile Aug 30, 2013

Categories : Café | Brunch

Finally found some motivation to travel out of the cosy home on a Sunday morning, to Department of Caffeine (D.O.C)! I’ve been hearing a lot about D.O.C’s buttermilk waffles and its been some time since I found my last favourite at Wimbly Lu, thus a trip down to Duxton was warranted. A large wooden plank hung on the pillar marks the territory of D.O.C clearly, or its frosted glass windows with black frames, right beside a night pub would have been rather misleading. If you know where Littered with Books is at, D.O.C is just a few doors down!

63 degrees Egg [2 soft eggs w dressed salmon, asparagus, lemon & dill cream on brioche crouton] ($$18.50) – These eggs remind me of those at Skyve; ultra runny and smooth, almost like the soft-boiled eggs from Ya Kun. Almost. That said, I really like this dish as it has all my favourite brunch items, including the green asparagus and salmon! Thankfully the brioche wasn’t too hard from toasting. I sort of lost the taste of the lemon and dill cream though which was overpowered by the eggs.

Buttermilk Waffles w Blueberry Compote & Premium Vanilla Ice Cream ($13.50) – Indeed, this is a must try!! The waffle was extremely light and fluffy, with a nice buttermilk taste. It’s so light that you could have 5 of them and not feel full. The blueberry compote was fresh but may be a little too sweet for those who have lower tolerance for sugar. However, I felt that the combination of hot waffles, plump and moist blueberries and straight-out-of-freezer ice cream is the perfect recipe for a wonderful Sunday morning. Okay, and any other time too!
