Be Genki! Smile Nov 07, 2013

Genki Sushi has been has been one of my favorite places for sushi. All my previous experiences were at the smaller outlet at Orchard Central. So I've decided to try out the bigger outlet at Chinatown Point.

Upon reaching, my buddy and I were greeted by a friendly staff who asked whether we were first-timers, we weren't so she didn't had to teach us their awesome ordering system, which was really easy, fun and addictive!

So we first got ourselves our Root Beer Float ($3.80) and they were generous with the big scoop of vanilla icecream, not too gasy nor sweet.

Then I've got to order my favorites from their menu, the California Roll ($3.80) and Dragon Roll ($3.80). The avocado were freshly sliced and tasted so great in our mouths, a must order!

If you haven't been to Genki Sushi already, one of the reason you'll love this place is the orders' train, where every orders you placed on the ordering pad will zoom out from the kitchen to right next to your table! Well except for some dishes that are hot like the Unagi Rice or Udon etc.

Then we've spotted something new on their menu called the SS Shrimp Roll ($3.80) which is basically a nice paper-thined roll tucked with fried tempura shrimp and fresh raw salmon, wrapped crabmeat along with some greens for mixture of texture and flavour. It compliments well with the ketchup that comes with it too, interesting combination!

And here's the rest of our table of Genki Sushi loves. From the centre there's the Tamago Sushi ($1.80), Egg Salad Sushi ($2.30), more California Roll ($3.80) and Dragon Roll ($3.80), Deep Fried Gyoza ($3.80), Kamikama Maki ($2.30) and lastly the favorite Deep Fried Squid Arm ($3.80).

At the end of the day, another thing that interests me is the hole for customers to insert the plates, so that we can always have a nicely cleared table! This is new to me since I didn't see it at the Orchard Central's outlet. Kind of fun actually!

Overall, Genki Sushi will always be in my favorites list for sushi cravings. Not only am I in love with the concept, the efficiency in orders, friendly staff and interesting ambience, the great menu have also always kept me satisfied throughout the way. Highly recommended place!

Boneless Duck Specialist Smile Nov 06, 2013

Categories : Singaporean | Food Court

Happened to be at Plaza Singapura in the late afternoon in the middle of the week so it's a good timing to have my late lunch at the always-crowded foodcourt.

So I've gotten myself the Braised Duck Rice ($3.80) which I haven't had in awhile. The staff were friendly and were always smiling.

Braised Duck Rice ($3.80)

The duck rice was served with generous amount of boneless duck meat which were braised to perfection, but would be good if it's a little thicker. The soup which was served warm tasted herbal and didn't really made me thirsty. The only downside was the rice which were slightly overcooked and could be more flavorful. I would try the other duck dishes next time again.

Fish Soup! Smile Nov 04, 2013

Categories : Coffeeshop

So I had a sudden urge for supper around a random neighborhood at Bukit Panjang & saw that the fish soup stall at this coffeeshop happens to be open!

Fried Fish Soup ($4)

Ordered the Fried Fish Soup with Thick Beehoon ($4). The stall owners are friendly with my order and they are pretty generous with their fish too. It's not that kind of fried fish that's mostly made up of flour, and the soup didn't really made me thirsty which helps a lot. The thick beehoon was also of a nice smooth texture which goes well with the milky soup base. Overall, it was a simple yet good neighborhood supper indeed!

The German Way Smile Oct 26, 2013

Categories : German | Bars/Lounges | Restaurant | Steaks and Grills

Always wanted to try out Brotzeit & finally got my chance on a Friday night! Have reserved a table for 4 at 8.30pm but the restaurant was too busy so we still had to wait for around 10minutes.

We booked a table indoor but got an outdoor table, it wasn't that bad because it's an al fresco by the seaside which has a lovely setting that gives you a relaxed atmosphere.
Pork Cheese Sausages ($18.50)

Pork Cheese Sausages ($18.50)

So we've ordered the Kasekrainer / Pork Cheese Sausages ($18.50) whereby the sausages are smoked and the dish also comes with potato salad and sauerkraut, which is actually sour cabbage. The presentation was very true to the menu and the taste is pretty impressive, I'm not a fan of the sauerkraut but the sausages were flavorful and the potatoes were addictive.
Currywurst / Pork Chesse Sausage ($17.50)

Currywurst / Pork Chesse Sausage ($17.50)

We've also ordered the Currywurst / Pork Curry Sausage ($17.50) and oh my, this was marvelous. The pork curry sausage was topped with chili-curry sauce that complements and enhances the overall balance. The potato wedges were fine though.
Spatzle ($5)

Spatzle ($5)

That was my first meal of the day since I was too busy to have my breakfast and lunch, so I was still hungry and went ahead to order a side dish called Spatzle ($5) which is a type of egg noodle or dumpling which they was homemade and simply butter-cooked it. Maybe because I ate this on its own instead of having it with some sausages, because I find that I got tired of it after the first few mouths. So I suggest this could be given a miss.
Bayrischer Longdrink & Original Munchner Lager

Bayrischer Longdrink & Original Munchner Lager

And what's a German restaurant without beer? We needed to drink and gotten ourselves the Original Munchner Lager ($9.50) and a Bayrischer Longdrink ($15.50). Paulaner sells the best Munich lager in the world and this was nicely golden brewed. The Longdrink was kind of my type of beer that's not too bitter because this beer mix contains the original lager with vodka and lime juice, which gives it good flavor.

Overall? Food was great, ambience was awesome but service lacks consistency, I did call a few times wishing to add on an order and one staff noted but later on forgot that I had previously called and went to serve some other tables. Yeah business was brisk but forgetting isn't really respectful. But besides this, the rest of the other staff were efficient, it definitely was not a perfect experience but I'll still return, maybe at another outlet at another time.

Thumbs Up Sakae! Smile Oct 25, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Sushi/Sashimi | Kids-Friendly

So just the other day I happened to be at Northpoint and was craving kind of badly for Japanese cuisine. Decided to have an awesome dinner at Sakae Sushi. The queue was long as usual and my buddy and I had to wait a good 10 minutes for the table with the ordering screen, but you don't have to wait that long for the other tables.
Sakae Ju ($13.99)

Sakae Ju ($13.99)

So I've gotten Sakae Ju ($13.99) which is basically rice topped with lightly grilled savoury salmon mayo, salmon sashimi and spicy salmon. I'm not a fan for salmon but I ordered it just to try it out, really awesome. But this dish is definitely great for salmon lovers.
Saba Nitsuke & Tebasaki ($18.99)

Saba Nitsuke & Tebasaki ($18.99)

My buddy ordered his Saba Nitsuke & Tebasaki ($18.99), which comes with a nice little bowl of rice that shouts "Itakakimasu!" along with a really good simmered mackerel that gives great omega as well as good old honey chicken wings. Simply delectable.
Miso Soup

Miso Soup

Both rice sets come with a bowl of miso soup that has the right consistency of dashi and miso paste. Unlike other restaurants, Sakae Sushi's miso soup gives you the a reasonable generous amount of kept and tofu.
Pink Plate ($4.29)

Pink Plate ($4.29)

Since we sit right next to the sushi conveyor belt, we got ourselves a Pink Plate ($4.29), I am not too sure what's this called but I mean it tasted amazing and is kind of photogenic. So it's awesome!

For desserts! Like seriously they changed their menu so much for the better, they now offer really good stuff.
Kyoto Matcha Azuki Monata & Mochi Ice Cream

Kyoto Matcha Azuki Monata & Mochi Ice Cream

Above is the Kyoto Matcha Azuki Monaka ($4.99) which is a half green tea and half red bean waffle icecream. The icecream could stay inside for awhile without melting & it's kind of fuss-free too. It's like one of the best I've tried. Along with it is some Mochi Ice Cream -2pc ($4.99), I don't prefer mochi alone but mochi with ice cream filling? That's the best. We got the green tea ones but they are also available in red bean, strawberry and mango flavours. But one feedback?

Overall, my experience at Sakae Sushi (Northpoint) was really good compared to my previous experience of bad service and mediocre food. This time round was superb with great service, great food, great ambience and new awesome menu that leaves people with never ending choices! Maybe they should change their dessert plate because the design is kind of not matching to everything else. Still, thumbs up to the new management system for it's overall improvements. I'll definitely return for other items on that menu.
