The BEST Beef Hor Fun! Smile Nov 03, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Hawker Centre | Noodles

Good Day located at Amoy Food Centre is a tze char stall with the Beef Hor Fun as its signature dish. It also serves a variety of hor fun (e.g Seafood, Slice Fish) and fried rice (e.g Yangzhou style, Beef).

I always tell my beef-lovers friends that this is my favourite beef hor fun in Singapore, definitely better than Geylang Lor 9's. However, be prepared to brave the long queue during lunch hours and the average waiting time is between 15 to 20 minutes.

So what constitutes a plate of awesome beef hor fun? First, the beef are best cooked as thin slices, the juicy beef at Good Day is cooked just right. Secondly, it is important to have sufficient 'wok hei' for a plate of hor fun to be tasty! Third, the Gravy! I must commend the rich thick black bean gravy that makes this beef hor fun flavourful! Lastly, for $4 a plate, they dish out a generous portion.

Give me a plate of Good Day's Beef Hor Fun anytime! It certainly satiated my picky taste buds!

Delicious Beef Noodles! Smile Oct 22, 2013

Categories : Chinese | Food Court | Noodles

I was wondering what to eat for lunch today & decided to go over to Wisma's Food Republic for lunch. After walking one round, I noticed this Odeon Beef Noodle. I've a vague impression that this is an old brand name, yet I've never try before!

Since it has been years that I ate the hainanese style beef noodles, I decided to give it a try. I opted for the Dry version, which costs $6. A bit steep but given that this is at Food Republic, this is the price range. I was served this huge bowl of thick bee hoon doused in a thick brown sauce.

Without any expectations, I took a bite of the beef slice & it turned out to be really good! The soup served separately also contained 3 beef balls. Thou i'm a beef-lover, but I dislike eating beef balls as most places sell beef balls that are chewy kind. This is different! The beef balls are soft & NO rubbery feel! The soup is also good.

At the end of my lunch, I felt satisfied with Odeon Beef Noodle & now I know where to head to when I have a beef craving! lol

My Favourite Udon Eatery!  Smile Oct 16, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Japanese

I came to know about Tamoya Udon from its Facebook page. This is my 2nd visit to Tamoya, however is my first try at the Chinatown Point outlet. This outlet is located at Basement 1, near to Uniqlo. My first impression of this outlet is its spaciousness.

Tamoya's style of ordering is you get to pick & match your choice of tempura from the bar counter. There is quite a variety to suit different taste! Personally, I go for the Ebi Tempura, Shitake Mushrooms & Potato Tempura. I like to share the various tempura with my friend. This trip was mainly to check out its Beef Udon (Kake Style).

Upon selecting your choice of tempura/sides, you just need to hand over to the counter & make your payment. Next, head over to the condiments section for some garnishing such as the crispy flakes, wakame seaweed and sauce. There is also free flow of ice water and soup refill available.

My first reaction when I tried the beef slices, it's simply oishiitongue! The thin slices of sweet & salty beef were cooked just right; not too stiff & the taste suits my taste bud perfectly! The hand-made udon immersed in the light Kake broth was chewy! yummy! Even my friend who is not a 100% beef lover agreed with me that the beef udon is nice!

I will return again to Tamoya to try its other dishes, maybe the Curry Udon next round!

Nice & Budget Italian Cuisine  OK Jan 21, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Italian | Middle Eastern/Mediterranean | Pasta

I came across Platypus Kitchen on OpenRice and saw pretty good reviews, hence I decided to try out for myself! It was a weekday dinner with my friend and the restaurant was relatively quiet. Their menu offer a wide selection of pasta and if you pay for the set meals, will cost around $19.90 (bef gst). For the set meals, you get to pick a Pasta, Tea/Coffee & Soup or Salad.

My friend chose the 'Black & White, Scallop & Crab', while I opted for the 'Spicy Diablo Crab & Prawn'. We got a Soup of the Day ~ Wild Mushroom Soup + Salad together. When our pasta arrived at our table, i realised that the portions were quite substantial! The Wild Mushroom Soup contained lots of garlic & I found it overpowering! The salad was refreshing. For the 'Black & White, Scallop & Crab', it's Interwoven Egg and Squid-Ink Tagliolini with crabs and scallops in white wine consomme. If it is squid-ink pasta alone, i probably won't dare to try. But this is rather interesting & the taste was good!

The Spicy Diablo Crab & Prawn is Egg Tagliolini with prawns and crab claw tossed in a spicy egg sauce. The presentation of the dish is nice as you see the whole chunk of crab meat piled up! It's slightly spicy but not over spicy, it may be too mild for those who love their chilli! When i compared these two main dish, i prefer the first one.

We also had Illy's Coffee and a Lychee Ice Tea to wrap up our meals.

Cantonese Fine Dining Dim Sum OK Nov 11, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Hotel | Dim Sum | Seafood | Fine Dining

Being cantonese, we of course love dim sum! My brother picked Yan Ting @ St.Regis for his birthday lunch. Since our family have not try this restaurant before, we gamely went ahead to sample the dim sum.

The table set-up was exquisite with its golden cutlery set laid out & the attentive wait staff who helped to pull our chairs & laid the napkins on our laps. The whole ambience was quiet and not many diners. To kick-start, we had a pot of 香片chinese tea.

We selected 10 different dim sum dishes to try. The first to arrive was our Century Egg with Lean Pork Congee. It cost $9 per bowl and the portion was meant for one! I felt that the congee was ok only & when I tried to bite the deep fried 'you tiao' bits, it was extremely hard that i had to give up on the bigger chunks!

All their dim sum items comes in 3s, so we topped up to 4 pieces for every one. The Liu Sha Bao aka Salted Egg Yolk Bun was nice! I count that as my favourite as the yolk was oozing once you bite into the bun. It is also just right, not too sweet.

I chose the Fried Beancurd Skin with Prawn & Seaweed ~ it was crispy & succulent indeed.

The Siew Mai & Har Gao were quite big but pretty normal.

I noticed a unique item on the menu, which states 草莓芋泥角 (Yam Croquette with Strawberry). The outlook seems good but I find that the yam is abit dry, it will be perfect if it is more moist. Oh ya, the strawberry topping was sour!

When the Xiao Long Bao 小龍包 (pork dumpling) was served individually, i admit i like its presentation & it is also easier to eat. I love Xiao Long Bao & these were pretty juicy as i drank up its soup! We also ordered the Chicken Claws & Pork Ribs but I couldn't comment as I do not eat these two items.

To end off our meal, we ordered four types of desserts. My mum had the Hot Almond Tea with Papaya; dad had the Honey Custard, bro chose the Aloe Vera with fruits & lastly I had the Pomelo with Mango ice-cream (芒果雪糕加楊枝甘露). The dark brownish honey custard was moist & soft, but I would prefer it to be more sweet (not my ideal kind of dessert). The Pomelo with Mango ice-cream was nice but I wish they can be more generous with the pomelo bits!

In a nutshell, we are unlikely to return again as it is really much more expensive & I only like 3 out of 10 items. Just a note, Citibank normal credit cards get 10%, while Citibank Platinum get 15% off the bill.
