Eggless Cakes But Just As Yummy!  Smile Jan 09, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Bakery

Saw a promotion for Emicakes Eggless Cake Cubes and Mini Delights where you can buy any 3 and get 1 free! Each eggless cake cube and mini delight was about $2.00 each, which we thought was quite reasonable, so we took up the offer and bought 3 eggless cakes and 1 mini delight!

Top Left to Right: Chocolate Eggless Cake, Durian Eggless Cake, Tiramisu Eggless Cake ($2.00 each)
Bottom Center: Ultimate Brownie Mini Delight ($2.00)

Chocolate Eggless Cake Cube ($2.00)
Among the three cakes, this was my favourite although my parents preferred the durian version. I wasn't too keen on the durian cake but that's just my personal preference. Despite being eggless, there didn't seem to be much difference between these and a normal cream cake. The sponge cake was very soft and fluffy and it was quite chocolate-y too!

Ultimate Brownie Mini Delight ($2.00)
There was actually another item with the same name "Ultimate Brownie" but at a slightly higher price of $2.90. The staff was quite helpful and explained that the more expensive one was actually a cake while the one at $2.00 was actually mousse. The one we got with the promotion was the mousse. This was thick and creamy and was quite chocolate-y as well.

At $2.00 each, I thought these were value for money. I'll definitely go back to try the other Eggless Cake Cubes flavours, such as the Oreomisu, as well as the other Mini Cakes like the Mini Ultimate Brownie ($2.90) and Mini Fudge Madess ($2.70). I'd highly recommend Emicakes if you are looking for a slightly healthier and more affordable dessert to satisfy your cravings!

Korean Snacks at Dong Dae Mun Smile Dec 25, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Korean

There used to be a Dong Dae Mun branch at Causeway Point and I was crushed when it closed down since I can no longer conveniently get my favorite Korean snacks. So while passing by the area at Jurong, I decided to pop by Jcube to check out the branch there.

The kiosk did not seem to be fully ready for business when I went around 12 noon as the display unit was sparse with some of the trays still empty. I was dismayed to see that quite a number of snacks I liked from Dong Dae Mun like the Tornado Potato was not available. So I ended up just getting the Seoul Crispy Chicken which is another one of my favourite from Dong Dae Mun. I also got the Kamja-Jeon Potato Pancake to try.

Seoul Crispy Chicken ($1.60)
This was fairly crispy and I just love the taste of the batter which was thick. The chicken meat was also quite tender and well-marinated with a hint of spices. For 4 pieces of chicken on a stick, I found this to be quite worth its price of $1.60.

Kamja-Jeon Potato Pancake ($2.50)
There is the spicy and non-spicy option for this pancake and I opted for the non-spicy version. This was fried on the spot so there was a slight wait for it. The staff also cut the pancake into smaller slices for easier eating. For $2.50, I thought that the portion was decent enough. The potato pancake was more chewy than crispy although the ingredients inside added a bit of a crunch to it. However, I found it to be a tad oily for my liking.

Overall, Dong Dae Mun is a decent choice if you want a quick fix of Korean snacks on the go. My personal favorites are the Tornado Potato, Seoul Crispy Chicken and the Spicy Rice Cake. Just note that these snacks, especially the fried ones, are best eaten while still hot and crispy!

Ming Ji Chicken Rice Smile Dec 23, 2013
Categories : Singaporean | Chinese | Coffeeshop | Chicken Rice

This stall is tucked at a corner and almost blocked by a pillar of wall so it wasn't exactly as visible as the other stalls in this coffee shop. But it offers decent Steamed or Roasted Chicken Rice for those staying nearby who want to get their Chicken Rice fix at a good price. There are also Chicken Porridge, Char Siew Rice and Roasted Pork Rice at $2.50 each, which is certainly quite affordable and reasonable! For $3.00, you can get a Chicken Wing Rice, or a Chicken Drumstick Rice at $3.50, while $4.00 can get you a Roasted Chicken Rice Set Meal, which include a side of vegetables that would cost either $2.00 or $3.00 for more vegetables if you get it as a separate dish. Not too bad a deal for a once-in-a-while "upsize" although I normally just go for the Chicken Rice!

Roasted Chicken Rice ($2.50)
For just the chicken rice only, you can opt for the $2.50 option or $3.00 option and I went for the cheaper version. The stall owner delivered the dish to our table and it came looking quite appetizing with a tomato slice throw in as well! The chicken meat was quite tender and slightly chewy, but I thought that the rice was not as fragrant as I would like it to be. The soup though, was very tasty and was exactly the kind I like to have with my chicken rice. The meal also came with spicy chilli, zesty ginger and sweet soy sauce which went quite well with the meat. I thought it was really nice of the stall owner to send all three sauces and chilli with the chicken rice on his own initiative without being asked to as some stalls I've been to only included the chilli.

Overall, I found the chicken rice to be quite decent for the price, and I personally like the taste of the soup here, although it'd be even better if the rice was more fragrant!

Long John Silver's  Smile Dec 18, 2013
Categories : American | Fast Food | Halal

Haven't been to Long John Silver's in a while, and I missed the Chocolate Cream Pie there... so we decided to have LJS for dinner!

Great Value 2 Pcs Chicken ($4.50)
This was the first thing we agreed on ordering because we love the batter LJS used to coat their chicken with. It was very crispy and crunchy and just so tasty! We were disappointed that they did not give the crispy batter bits like they used to even after we specifically asked for it. I always loved munching on those bits! At least there were the fries which somewhat crispy outside and yet so soft inside. The LJS taste is also quite different from the usual fast food fries like those at McDonald's or KFC, which makes their fries more memorable!

Snacker Combo 5 Pcs Chicken Bites Set ($3.60)
The sets on the Snacker Combo menu are among one of my favorites at LJS! Between us, we have tried the Chicken Bites, Cheese Munchies and Crazy Potato Snacker Combo meals before. The Chicken Bites are basically chicken nuggets while the cheese munchies are like mini hash brown with cheese. These snacks alone cost $2.50 ala carte so it's definitely more value for money to get them as a combo set which will come with a drink and fries, although you can also change the fries to chips if you prefer.

Coke and Green Tea
These came with the sets we ordered although it costs $0.25 to swap one of the cokes for Iced Green Tea.

Chocolate Cream Pie ($2.50)
Made with real Hershey's cocoa, this is probably one of those mass-produced desserts that I actually like. This is a simple "pie": just a chocolate crust, lots of chocolate cream, and a sprinkling of chocolate shavings. But I love every single bit of it! Plus, at $2.50, it is cheaper than some of the more expensive desserts that I've tried but didn't like as much. I'd make a trip to LJS just for this pie alone!

Burger King Smile Dec 18, 2013
Categories : American | Fast Food | Halal | Burgers and Sandwiches

This King needs no introduction. I'm glad that Burger King now have a range of more affordable set meals compared to their full-sized but higher-priced set meals even if the portion is a tad smaller.

We came here on a weekday night for dinner and the queue was fortunately not as long like it usually was, so we got our food pretty fast. What we didn't like was that they removed the full menu listing from the signboard above but replaced it with more pictures of certain meals. While this was visually helpful, it also meant that there was no way to see if other unlisted items on their menu was still available. We ended up having to keep checking with the staff. Chicken tenders? Got. Sundae Pie? Still have. Err... Honey Mustard Chicken Burger? Yup, it's that Chick'N Grill Burger. In the end, we just gave up and ordered whatever. But you gotta credit the staff for good product knowledge.

Flamin' Hot Deals - Spicy BK Chick'n Crisp ($3.95)
At $3.95 for a set of a burger, potato wedges and coke, it was really quite affordable and value for money. We didn't really expect much of the food since this was the value set, but the slightly spicy chicken patty was quite crisp although I personally preferred their Honey Mustard Chicken burger from one of the earlier promotion. The wedges were also quite okay and we actually preferred these over their usual french fries, but these are best eaten hot.

BK Cheesy Fries ($1.95)
They also have a "Star buy" promotion for some of the items at lower prices like the Sundae ($1.45) or Taro Turnover Pie ($0.95). The promotion when we went included the cheese fries which we bought to try. This came with just fries and cheese and did not have mayonnaise and garnish like KFC's cheese fries. Still, the Burger King cheese fries was quite okay and the cheese was cheesy enough for us. But when it comes to cheese fries, KFC is clearly the King both portion-wise and taste-wise.

Hershey's Sundae Pie ($2.95)
For me, the highlight was still the dessert, the Hershey's Sundae Pie! This was the first time I actually tried this since I always buy the Hershey's Chocolate Cream Pie from Long John Silver instead. The pie did not looked as nice as shown on the packaging due to the flattened whipped cream on top, but the slightly moist chocolate crust with the chocolate ice cream filling was quite chocolate-y and delicious! Can't go wrong with Hershey's! lol
