Back to An Old Haunt OK Jan 31, 2012

Categories : Indian | Hawker Centre | Halal

Last night, we visited this old haunt after many years.
The layout of the stalls had been changed and the ambience did not seem quite the same as in the past.
Nevertheless, we decided to sample the fare from this stall, that has been an all-time favourite for Fried Bee Hoon (Bee Hoon Goreng) and Fried Rice.
It was not a very busy evening and there were many empty tables.
The order was taken, prepared and served within 5-10 minutes.
However, the taste was not quite like what we had expected.
It was just OK. In the past, the Fried Bee Hoon here was one of the best.
There was a generous dose of mutton in the dish, but there were hardly any other ingredients.
The noodles were also too dry and there was just something missing from the taste; though we couldnt figure just what it was,
The Fried Rice was a little better, though.
In addition, the condition of the food centre was another contentious issue.
It was not as clean as other food centres that I had been to.
Overall, it was not what we had expected, but it was okay.

Toast for a Change OK Jan 31, 2012

The Wang Cafe at My Village at Serangoon Garden has always been a popular haunt for those who crave for coffee served the old-fashioned way.
I am no exception. We dropped by Wang Cafe for coffee and toast.
We ordered Kopi C and Butter Sugar toast. It is always a delight to sip coffee from the
coffee cup that looks like something from our grandparents' time.
The coffee was superb, as usual.
The toast was just right, not too crunchy and the butter pieces just melt in your mouth.
It is always not easy to get the butter at the right consistency - not too hard and not too soft! The combination of butter and sugar just melts in my mouth and makes me come back for more. Both the toast and coffee were great.
The only problem was the lack of staff, which translated into all the tables being left uncleaned. There were plates, bowls, cups and cutlery lying around.
Overall, this made the dining experience less than perfect, unfortunately.

Laksa for a Change OK Jan 30, 2012

Categories : Singaporean | Coffeeshop

Dropped by this outlet close to closing time, but it was NOT closing time yet.
Despite this, a staff member was busy cleaning the glass panels with soapy water while drinks and food were being prepared right next to her. That didn't seem to be very hygienic, though. Except for that glitch, the laksa tasted okay. This variation, with the fat, stubby, chubby noodles, is an interesting change. I didn't really feel like drinking the Ice Lemon Tea, after watching the staff cleaning and preparing at the same time.
Overall. the laksa was okay, with lots of Dried tofu, fish cake and prawns. It is a good variation from the traditional laksa.

Ice Kacang, Gurney style OK Jan 30, 2012
Categories : Malaysian | Halal

Decided to go for a dessert trip this time.
We tried the Ice Kacang - Penang Style. In addition to the usual ice kacang ingredients,
there was brown sugar sprinkled on top and strips of sweet preserved fruit (kana), as well as some other ingredients that we couldn't figure out.
It was okay to try once, but I won't be back for more !

Delightful Dining at Jack's Smile Jan 30, 2012

Categories : American | Steaks and Grills

A visit to Jack's always presents a chance to try something new and different.
The menu offers a delectable variety of mouth watering dishes.
We started with the Cream of Mushroom Soup.
The homemade soup was rich in flavour and good to the last drop.
The Mushrooms stuffed with lobster and crabmeat - our appetiser - was unique in its taste.
As always, the Lamb Chops were succulent and juicy.
The spaghetti was a huge portion with large chunks of chicken meat.
