Whenever you go to the food centre at Jurong West Ave 1, you'd never fail to see many tables with green bowls of smooth porridge, plates of steamed chicken and yusheng. I'm also a fan of Soh Kee's chicken porridge and yusheng and I have it usually once a week.

Their porridge is smooth and very tasty on it's own. I slurp down bowls and bowls of it even without the chicken or any other dishes lol.

The steamed chicken is smooth and tender, and I really love the sauce and spring onions that come with it! lol

I also love their yusheng which has thin slices of raw fish, crackers and shredded cabbage and carrot. I don't know what kind of sauce they use but it's extremely addictive. Together with the crunch of the shredded veg and crispy crackers, I could keep eating and eating the yusheng lol

My friends have been raving about their aburi salmon sushi and every review I've seen online has the exact same positive sentiments, even saying that their aburi salmon sushi is the best in Singapore. Being a fan of aburi salmon, I, of course, had to try it out for myself! I also ordered some other dishes that people have recommended in their online reviews.
Scallop Mentaiko

Scallop Mentaiko

Scallop Mentaiko: This dish consisted of torched thinly sliced raw scallops and mentaiko. It was subtly sweet (from the scallops) and subtly salty (from the mentaiko), and it tasted nicer when you put a little bit of the flying fish roe and spring onion with the scallop mentaiko. This was not bad but the portion was much smaller than expected. I really wished the scallops weren't sliced so thinly sad.
Wafu Spaghetti

Wafu Spaghetti

Wafu Spaghetti: This was thin spaghetti (but still thicker than angel hair) in a pink cream sauce with flying fish roe. The cream sauce was light so you will not get easily sick of it. Portion was pretty small too.
Salmon Aburi Sushi

Salmon Aburi Sushi

Salmon Aburi Sushi: Encased within the sushi rice was cucumber, avocado, raw salmon & crab stick, and this was topped with salmon aburi (torched salmon) and a dollop of mentaiko. This was definitely good but not as amazing as I thought it would be... I don't think I'll call it the best aburi salmon sushi in Singapore. Nevertheless, the salmon and avocado was melt-in-your-mouth. However I think the aburi salmon could be thicker.
Ebi Fry Salmon Aburi Sushi

Ebi Fry Salmon Aburi Sushi

Ebi Fry Salmon Aburi Sushi: This was like the salmon aburi sushi, except they have fried prawn & avocado in the sushi. I preferred this to the normal salmon aburi sushi as the ebi fry lent a different flavour and texture to the sushi.

Recommended Dish(es):  Scallop Mentaiko

Frozen Yoghurt Smile Feb 21, 2014

Categories : Frozen Yogurt

Menchie’s is a pretty new frozen yoghurt place in Vivocity. I went to check it out one day during lunch. The store was pretty big with quite number of seats and a private room for parties/big groups of people.

It’s a self-service kind of place but don’t worry, there’s a friendly staff who’s always looking on you just in case you need any help. There’s no small/medium/large cup size at Menchie’s, instead how much you pay depends on the weight of your cup after you’ve filled it up with your frozen yoghurt and toppings. Hence it’s totally customizable to how much you want to eat.

First you grab a cup then proceed to walk all the way in to the frozen yoghurt station, where there are many flavours of yoghurt ice cream (around 10 flavours if I don’t remember wrongly, ranging from tart, cookies & cream, vanilla, peanut butter etc) for you to take your pick from. There’s no limit as to how many flavours you can put into one cup. After picking the flavour, you go to that machine and pull a lever down, and the yoghurt ice cream will come swirling out slowly. Next, go to the toppings section on your right, where there’re fruits, granola, nuts, seeds, cereal and gummy toppings. Add whichever toppings you want and when you’re done, proceed to the cashier and place your cup directly on their digital weighing machine. Over there you can see the weight of your cup and how much you need to pay.

I selected ‘Tart’ (which is the original flavour) and added some cereal, coco pops and sunflower seeds. My cup weighed about 135g and the cost came up to $4.55. It was not bad, though I feel it’s pretty expensive. The tartness was just right and the frozen yoghurt was really really cold. Toppings were also fresh and crispy. The only thing that might make me think twice about buying their frozen yoghurt again is the cost sad If you look at the photo above, you can see that they provide really cute spoons which are of a really good material! Some of you may even want to give it a wash and bring it back home, as it’ll really be a waste to throw it away after one use tongue

Oyster Mee Sua Smile Feb 19, 2014
Categories : Taiwanese

When you order their oyster mee sua, they will ask if you want to have all the ingredients added inside, which are oysters (3 of them), shredded chicken, vinegar, coriander and chilli paste. They also have another option, pork rib mee sua, and also a variety of combo sets for $7.30 which consists of mee sua and fried chicken/calamri/sweet potato fries etc. You can also add a drink to the combo set for $8.

Oyster Mee Sua $4
The oysters were not bad, big and didn't have the fishy taste. Texture of the mee sua was also good, nice and soft but not soggy and overly soft. Would definitely buy it again if I'm looking for a light and easy to eat meal.

Great food :) Smile Feb 18, 2014

My friends and I decided to have something for tea as our lunch was not very filling. We ordered the following to share.

Plain Congee $1.80
Their plain congee came in quite a big bowl and was really really smooth. Even though there weren't any ingredients, it was tasty on it's own. This was really good, an ultimate comfort food.

Plain Noodle Dry $3.00
Their noodle was kinda starchy but al dente at the same time. This would be good if it's less starchy.

Pan-fried Water Chestnut with Osmanthus Cake $4.20
These were kinda like radish cake, except the cake is a gelatinous and transclucent version so you could see the diced water chestnuts and osmanthus bits inside. While I could not taste the osmanthus, I still liked this dish and found it interesting. It was a little sweet and I liked the contrasting textures of the crunchy water chestnuts and the jelly-like cake.

Xiao Long Bao $4.40
These did not disappoint. Thickness of the skin was ok and the soup and meat were flavourful. Good!
