Love their Jajangmyun! Smile Dec 11, 2013

Categories : Korean | Korean BBQ

I've been to Korea once and unfortunately, did not try their Jajangmyun hence I don't know how the authentic ones taste like. However, the Jajangmyun from Dong Fang Hong was highly recommended by my friend (who had been to Korea before and tasted the authentic ones over there) and she brought me here for dinner last night.

Jajangmyun is a noodle dish, consisting of noodles in nice and savoury black bean sauce. There's also diced onions and potato in the mix, topped with sliced cucumbers. Even though everything is so dark and black, please do not be turned off by the looks! The taste is extremely good, and the diced potato and onions has been cooked till it melts in your mouth. The noodles are bouncy and al dente, and easily gets coated with all the lovely black bean sauce.

This is how it looks like after everything is mixed together.

Do give it a try! smile

It was my dad's birthday so we decided to celebrate it at a Chinese restaurant. Prima Tower is located about 10min walk away from Vivocity. The exterior looked pretty old and is situated out of nowhere, atop Prima's flour mill. We had to take a lift all the way to the 9th floor, and from there were still had to walk up some stairs, which was carpeted and spiraled up. It looked very old school and had a nice nostalgic feeling to it.

There was nothing to shout about with regards to the interior of the restaurant. However, the revolving of the entire restaurant gave the dining experience a novelty. Don't worry, it spins really slowly (one round takes 45 mins) so most of you shouldn't notice a thing tongue

We ordered a number of dishes:

Century Egg Porridge
This was really yummy! I have high expectations for century egg porridge and this bowl satisfied me smile You know how some porridge consists of just porridge and the ingredients and all the flavours have not merged together so the porridge is just really plain? Theirs is the opposite! The porridge was really smooth and had absorbed all the flavours of the meat and century egg after hours of boiling. SUPER comforting!

Shredded Scallops with Fish & Egg White
I've never heard of this before but this was one of the recommended dishes hence we ordered it. The Chinese name for this dish is called 赛螃蟹, which means mock crab. When this dish was served, you could see the bowl filled with lots of egg white, some fish and shredded scallops with a raw yolk in the middle. The waitress will then proceed to mix it all up and scoop into the individual bowls. Who would have guessed that a combination of egg white, fish and scallops can REALLY give you the taste and texture of crab meat!! Trust me, I was really amazed at how similar it tasted. This dish is really superb.

Peking Duck
This was their signature dish hence we ordered it too. They helped us to wrap the peking duck skin so it was really convenient for us. However, this dish really failed our expectations. It was really dry and tasteless. Don't know how come this can be their signature dish sad

Can't remember the name of this dish but basically it was Asparagus wrapped in fish meat and then fried. This taste ok, nothing to shout about.

We ended off our lunch with Toffee Banana, also highly recommended by the staff. This dessert was 'made' at your table - the waitress would come out with some fried banana chunks and toffee sauce and a big bowl of ice water. First, she’ll coat the banana pieces in the toffee sauce, then proceed to dunk it into the bowl of ice water and ensure that they are fully immersed in the water. By doing this, the ice water actually hardens the toffee sauce so what you get are some lovely banana coated in toffee! This is pretty innovative and fun to watch. The dish itself was also yummy, but those who don’t have a sweet tooth might find it a little too sweet.

Overall, the prices are kinda steep but the revolving part was interesting and some of the dishes were really yummy and not easily found in other places. Definitely worth a try!

Some may not know but Marche has also jumped onto the 'value lunch set' bandwagon - there are different options everyday and the menu also changes from week to week! You can check out the menu here http://www.marche-restaurants.com/en/marche-vivocity. All their lunch sets are $8.90+ inclusive of drinks, where there're quite a few options for you to choose from such as lemon tea, lemonade, apple tea etc.

For one of the days, they offered Roast chicken with brown sauce with a side of baked potato topped with sour cream and bacon. The portion was huge (half a small chicken) and hence, super worth it! And the important thing is that the chicken was really tender and moist, and the chicken skin had already absorbed all the spices it had been marinated in. I think there was no need for the brown sauce as it was already good on it's own!

The baked potato was also good, soft enough with a nice buttery texture and sufficient sour cream and bacon toppings. There was really nothing to fault about this dish smile

Best Hokkien Mee I've tasted! Smile Dec 10, 2013

Categories : Hawker Centre | Noodles

Some say that they serve the best Hokkien Mee in Singapore, so of course I had to go down to give it a try sooner or later! smile

I went down on a Sunday afternoon and guess what, the owner told me I had to wait for 1.5hrs for my food! It sounds extremely ridiculous, but I had come all the way here just to try their Hokkien mee, so I decided to just wait. Thankfully, we got our plates of Hokkien mee in 20 mins!

We ordered the $3 portion for each of us and the portion was REALLY LITTLE - it was like a starter for me?! But serving portion aside, this Hokkien mee is truly the best that I've tasted.

Nam Sing's version is different from many others in that they use thin bee hoon instead of thick bee hoon, and is served wet, immersed in extremely flavourful prawn stock that has been reduced to something like a gravy. This means that all the noodle strands have absorbed all the lovely seafood flavours, but the noodles did not turn soggy at all. How wonderful is that! smile

As Nam Sing is really far from where I live, I don't think I'll go down again just to have their Hokkien mee. However if I'm in the vicinity, I will definitely return to slurp up more of their yummy noodles and prawn stock/gravy! smile If you've not tried it yet, you should make a trip down soon!

My fav comfort food! Smile Dec 09, 2013

Categories : Hawker Centre

As ABC food centre is near where I live, I always buy my meals from the stalls here.

Even though there are supposedly many yummy food here, I ALWAYS buy the fish noodle from this stall, it's really my ultimate comfort food! I always order either the fish mee sua or fish e-mee. Each bowl is served with some green veg, cabbage, tomato, tofu and sometimes bitter gourd. I really love their fish noodle and it's always my number choice!
