"Boba" Milk Tea OK Feb 21, 2014
Categories : Taiwanese | Chinese Desserts | Bubble Tea/ Tea

While looking at their menu, their "Boba" Milk Tea piqued my interest. For those who don't know, "boba" in Chinese means...a woman's chest area, hence I was guessing that perhaps it was actually papaya milk tea as some girls swear by papaya milk shakes to make themselves bustier. Anyway, I checked with the staff what exactly it is and it's actually just pearl milk tea.

"Boba" Milk Tea $3.60
While $3.60 is quite pricy for a cup of milk tea, BlackBall's cup is actually quite tall hence it justifies the price. Although it's stated on the menu that it's a 'must-try', I feel that the milk tea is okay only. I had the 30% sugar level which is slightly sweet only. The pearls are nice and chewy. Think I'll just stick to their desserts in the future instead of buying their drinks.

Hokkien Mee & Oyster Omelette OK Feb 21, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Food Court

This food court is quite big with many stalls offering a wide variety of cuisines. There are even 4 stalls with their own seating area where only their customers are allowed to sit at. I was craving for Oyster Omelette hence I got a plate of this to share, plus Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee from the same stall.

Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee $3.50
This was not bad. Their Hokkien mee was quite wet, just the way I like it, and the thick bee hoon they use is slightly thinner than the normal thick bee hoon. There were 3 small peeled prawns and several tiny slices of pork belly, and some egg pieces that was fried with the noodles. I do wish they could have more/bigger pork slices and that the gravy had more prawn fragrance.

Oyster Omelette $6
This was not too bad too. Oysters were big and plump and the omelette was moist. However would have preferred if there were just a little bit more egg instead of starch.

Mont Blanc OK Feb 18, 2014
Categories : Bakery

It was my dad's birthday and we were looking for something that's light on the palate, and fruit cakes are very common hence we decided on the Mont Blanc.

The Mont Blanc is essentially vanilla sponge cake layered with whipped cream and chestnut filling, topped with chestnut cream. We bought the smallest cake (480g) which serves 6, for $36. I felt that the sponge cake was kinda dense and dry. The level of the sweetness was just right for me. I don't think there's anything special about their Mont Blanc and will try out their other cakes instead next time.

Nice chicken OK Feb 14, 2014
Categories : American | Fast Food | Halal

I used to think that Texas Chicken had the best fried chicken (in the fast food chain category). However I felt like today's meal was quite disappointing as compared to last time.

Firstly, the chicken meat seems to have shrunk in size. The mash potato is also soso...I thought it used to be quite good. However, the biscuit is still quite good and the chicken meat quality and texture is still way better than KFC'S and Popeye's. It's smooth, moist and tender. However I think they can still improve their fried chicken batter to make it more tasty.

So-so Steamboat OK Feb 06, 2014
Categories : Steamboat/Hot Pot

I’ve heard about JPOT and how some people rave about their Silky Porridge Soup Base hence I was really happy to find out that we were going there for our CNY lunch.

My colleagues ordered the set for us to share: $138++ for 4 pax. I was quite surprised to find out that the steamboat is actually a personal pot. I chose the Silky Porridge Soup Base since I’ve heard good reviews about it and other places don’t offer this. It wasn’t porridge per se, meaning there weren’t any grains in it. Instead it was more like a slightly starchy rice water (trust me it’s not as gross as it sounds) which was not bad. There was already some taste and flavour before I added in any ingredients.

Seafood Platter
This platter was huge! It consisted of live prawns, sliced fish, scallop, handmade prawn ball and fish ball, sea clam, shrimp dumplings, siew mai, tau pok with fish paste, red chilli with fish paste and fish paste tofu. Overall I did not enjoy most of the things here especially the yong tau fu, siew mai and dumplings etc which were soso/not very nice. I liked the fish and scallops though, and the handmade prawn ball was really good. You could still see small chunks of prawns in the prawn ball.

Beef Short Rib and Kurobuta Pork
There were a few choices of meat to choose from – Beef Short Rib, Kurobuta Pork, Pork Loin, Chicken, Marinated Beef, Marinated Pork and Marinated Chicken. We chose the first 2. The Meat were not bad but I’ve had better ones elsewhere.

Platter of Homemade Spinach Skin Beancurd, Fried Beancurd Skin, Fried Fish Skin and Fried Wanton
I liked everything in this platter! Everything was crisp and nicely fried and not oily at all. I placed some of the fried fish skin into my silky porridge and it was quite nice! The fish skin was really crispy so even though I placed it in the porridge for about a min, it did not turn soggy at all.

In the set there was also Spinach, Tang-O and Enoki Mushroom included. For the carbs you could choose 2 items from either rice, Laksa noodle, vermicelli, instant noodle and pho/thin hor fun.

It worked out to be about $40/pax and for this price and quality I really think that it’s not worth it (don’t forget this is a set so you may not necessarily like all the items included). I ordered ala carte at Crystal Jade Steamboat (Zhongshan Mall) and really enjoyed all the food and spent only $32/pax.
