Nothing like the KL Wanton Mee  OK Mar 22, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Malaysian | Food Court | Noodles

During my staycation at RWS, we settled our meals at the Malaysian Food Street for quite a few times since that is the only "foodcourt" there, the rest being all restaurants and cafes. This wanton mee ($4.50) is obviously nothing like KL wanton mee which I have tried before. But, to be fair, even without comparing to KL's, it is nowhere close to any other wanton mee in Singapore's hawker centres. The point is, I can find nicer wanton mee in hawkers at a cheaper price. Of course I expect the price to be high, afterall, this is a resort catered to tourists, but no excuses for the taste, it's not even nice!

The noodles disappointed me, I could taste the "jian" taste in the noodles, which I hated. The char siew are thick and juicy and the wanton was nice too, but I really didnt like the noodles. If the noodles of a bowl of wanton noodles is not nice, who would want to finish the noodles despite the ingredients being not bad, mind you, noodles is the main essense of this dish isnt it?

Nice food, Expensive Drinks! Smile Mar 22, 2014

Categories : Japanese | Café | Desserts and Cakes | Ramen

We were there at 6pm on a weekday evening, and since there was no queue (happy!), we decided to have our dinner there. The place look really nice and comfy to chill but sadly only two of us couldnt get to sit on their comfy looking sofa seats which is for a bigger group. Anyway, it was our first time there so was quite excited to try the food.

Being green tea lovers, we ordered the Hot Matcha Latte ($9). I feel it is quite overpriced for this small cup of matcha latte which I can finish in a few sips. But it is really nice, thick and powdery, and I could feel the real matcha taste in it, warm and satisfying! I love it!

I had the Fuwa Fuwa Hoshino Souffle ($15.80). True to its name, it is soft and fluffy, and beneath the fluffy souffle is hot and pipping delectable rice with mushrooms, pork and beef. The waiter told us that all their rice dishes contains beef, if you strictly cannot take beef, avoid the rice and go for the pastas. I don't usually take beef coz I dont like it, but as I wanted to try this Fuwa Fuwa Souffle, I went ahead to order. Anyway, it wasnt too bad, and just a few pieces of beef isnt too beefy either, so it is acceptable. I like the rice, its warm and tasty, real comfort food to me.

My friend had the Lobster Bisque Spaghetti ($16), and it was a very large serving. I tried a bit and it was quite nice, strong lobster taste of the soup and spaghetti. My friend like it and finished every bit of it! We were quite full from our mains, so we had to skip dessert.

As we have not met up for many years and had a lot to chat, we were there from 6pm till about 930pm. I was afraid that they would chase us after we finish our meal, coz we could see queues forming at 7pm. But to our delight, they did not chase us and allow us to sit and chat even after we finish our meal, but well, we still had our drinks with us. Service was quite good too, and they were very diligent in refilling our iced water! So we had quite a pleasant experience on our first visit to Hoshino. The things here are quite pricey especially their drinks and desserts, so I may think twice about coming back again.

Still as good as ever! Smile Mar 21, 2014

Categories : Hainanese | Restaurant | Chicken Rice

Have not ate this chicken rice for a long time ever since it stop operations at Novena Ville. Was at United Square last week and so it gave us a reason to settle our lunch there. It is the first time I visited the United Square outlet, a big and aircon unit. Had to wait a while for a table cos the place was full though big! It is weird given that at their former Novena Ville outlet, the place was much more smaller with fewer tables, but we never have to wait for a table there. And, we had to share tables here too.

Anyway, we decided to order the steamed white chicken for 2 pax plus rice, instead of the 1 pax chicken rice which is $4.80, an increase of $0.80 (used to be $4 at Novena Ville), I presume it is because of the now air conditioned premises and that it is now at a shopping mall instead of a coffeeshop. The chicken for 2 pax ($8.50) is actually a quarter chicken, and we ordered two fragrant chicken rice at $0.80 each. (Plain white rice is cheaper at $0.50.) Love the rice as usual, so fragrant and fluffy. And the quarter chicken is more than enough for the two of us, smooth and tender, so yummy! Satisfied!

The place now also sells other dishes other than chicken rice, just like those dishes found in zhu chao stalls. So, it now is another place to consider for dinner if you want something more than chicken rice!

Good food & drinks! Smile Mar 21, 2014

Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Restaurant

TCC is my favourite place for gatherings and good food. Some may not feel so, but I do think the food standard at TCC is good, they serve really delicious pasta and mains, and I love their drinks too! My only lament is their prices are on the high side, $20plus on average for a pasta. So I always make use of the GSS 1 for 1 promotion or during my birthday month where I enjoy 50% discount as a member!

My all time favourite has to be the Mentaiko Spaghetti with Salmon Tataki. Smooth and tender pink salmon with a picture perfect sunny side up, together with the rich and flavourful mentaiko sauce on the spaghetti, it is just tantalising and finger licking good! Just love this!

The Red Hot Chicken Spaghetti is quite spicy for my level as I cannot really take too spicy stuff. I did not really like tomato based pasta, so this is not my cup of tea. There are quite a bit of chicken chunks, but it really proved too spicy for me!

Another of my favourite is the Seafood Aglio Olio. I aways ask for less spicy, love the seasoning of this pasta, especially the garlic! The scallops and prawns are fresh and tasty too. This is aways the must-order item in TCC too!

We cannot go without the Potato Wedges with cheese dip everytime we dine at TCC too. Lovely and tasty golden brown wedges dipped in their very yummy cheese sauce, it is the perfect snack! The snack platter includes the mozza sticks, onion rings and calamari rings, a good choice if you want to try each of everything!

This bizzarely named dish is actually tortilla wrap with mushroom, toufu and spinach. Not nice, it tastes as bizzare as the name! The tortilla is hard and the fillings in the wrap tastes very raw, the feeling is as if I am eating grass!

I dont really fancy the desserts at TCC. I feel that their food is better than their desserts. Didnt really like this Puffy Triplets too. Chocolate ice cream tucked in between three puffs on top of a quite dry cake, nothing too special or tasty, just normal. Love their food over their desserts though, and the drinks are something worth ordering too.

Dim Sum lunch! OK Mar 20, 2014
Categories : Beijing | Restaurant

Dian Xiao Er is the place where I get my chinese food fix, the specialty duck is definitely our must-have every time we dine at Dian Xiao Er. Have saw the ads in Tiong Bahru Plaza that the dim sum menu is exclusively available at the Tiong Bahru Plaza outlet. So, we finally made our way there to try the dim sum.

Ordered our favourite Custard Bun ($4.20), we have never tried the dim sum here before, so we ordered a number of items to try. The Custard Buns were very small, I think this is the smallest custard buns I have ever seen!

Taste wise, it was quite nice, the oozing and bursting flavour of the custard was good, but I felt that it was just too small!

We like how the Carrot cake ($3.60) is pan fried to its crispy and brown texture. We could taste the carrot bits with each bite, good and tasty!

The Fried Mango Fritters ($4.20) isn't too bad, but I felt that the crispy shreds was too much, it seems that we had to eat a lot of the fried shreds before we could taste the mango inside. This didnt quite please me, won't order this again the next time.

If you like fried items, the Fried Prawn Dumpling with Mayo ($3.90) is not a bad choice. Dip it with mayo and enjoy the crispiness on the outer part and freshness of the prawn inside.

The Banana & Prawn Roll ($4.20) is a very pleasing dessert. Eaten hot, the taste of the banana and prawn blends well and gives a melt in the mouth feeling. A sweet delight!

We love the Jin Chuan Dumpling ($3.90), especially with the special garlic sauce, it is a bit sour and spicy, just like hot and sour soup... nice and appetising! However, it didnt look as nice as it tasted! When I saw it being served, I though it looks like a frozen dumpling to me. It didnt help that it was served on a small sauce dish and not a plate, presentation was very bad!

The rice roll with char siew ($4.20) was a disappointment. The skin of the rice roll was dull and tasteless, and the char siew was equally bad. The rice roll and char siew couldnt blend, taste test fail!

The Yam Cake ($3.60) was a pleasant surprise, it didnt look very nice on the appearance, but it tasted true to its ingredients and is rich and yammy!

The congee ($3.30) is the usual nice chinese style congee, with bits of pork and century egg, comforting and warm!

The dim sum is average over at Dian Xiao Er, a few items disappointed while a few was nice though not fantastic. The menu is not very extensive too, I was looking for Fried Spring Roll but couldn't find any, I thought this should be on every dim sum menu! Still, it is worth trying the dim sum here. But I most probably wont try it a second time though, as I still prefer the main courses and the specialty duck at Dian Xiao Er!

There is a 35% Senior Citizens & Students discount on dim sum when we visited at about 2pm for late lunch. The discount is applicable at two slots from 10 - 11.30am and 2 - 4.30pm. Quite a good deal!
